| Engineering setup for Friday 30 March 2007
MP 473: Lower Hybrid Check-out and Initial Operation Session leader: Wilson Physics operator: Parker ECDC overnight in D2, pressure=2e-4 Torr. Rmin/Rdwell/Rmax = 44/45/103 cm. Bake at 60 C. The run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00. Power systems as on 1070329012. A-coil configuration: normal [Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) NINJA pumped out disabled Enable the following gate valves and shutters: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Torvac setup: Gate valves open during pulse. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: None LH Setup: Plan to operate with power up to 2 MW ___________________________________ Start from shot 1070329012 as lower hybrid target. Purpose of run is to begin process of bringing LH power and pulse length up to and ultimately exceeding levels achieved in the last run campaign. Some piggy backing in support of MP's 464, 467 and 468 will occur. |

| Started the run this morning to complete day 1 of lower hybrid coupling studies. Completed density scans with grill 2mm and 1.5mm behind LH limiter. Got reflection coef down to 11-12% at 90 degree phasing using plasma shape from 1070329018 but with grill 1.5mm behind limiter. This is the best result we've gotten so far.
Switch to Randy's MP at shot 12 and increased net power up to 550kW. Reflection coeffecients started low early in pulse but would rise to ~15% by the end of the pulse. Two interesting phenomena of note: Bright lines are seen across the LH grill while power is on. These are clearly from LH since they disappear when LH system trips out. Oscillations are observed in the top and bottom reflection coef, but these oscillations are out of phase such that the total refco stays constant. Interestingly the top and bottom LH langmuir probe densities oscillate with the same period but in phase with each other. Several fizzles late in the day but still got good data. Tried to run ICRF and LH concurrently on last shot but was thwarted by a fizzle. |

| The run was somewhat laborious with a slow start and a few delays.
The first problem was the discovery during a magnetics test that the OH1 current did not track the PLC programmed value. This was traced to a software problem, but resulted in a delay of 2.5 hours. The first 3 shots were used for PLC control tests and the first plasma shot was shot 4. Shots 4-13 ran well, with the exception of one fizzle blamed on the firing of the NB into gas between shots (?). These shots produced useful data for Greg's miniproposal on optimizing LH coupling as a function of grill position and density. On shot 13 a TF fuse blew and had to be replaced resulting in ~ 1 hour delay (including 50 kA test shot). Beginning with shot 16, the rest of the run was devoted to bringing up the LH power and pulse length. Om shot 17 ,the plasma disrupted near the end of the LH pulse (~ 900 kW at FINTs) and 2 subsequent pulses fizzled. Finally a full length shot was obtained on shot 20, with the LH ramping from ~ 450 kW to 0.9 MW over 400 ms at the FINT's. Shot 21 fizzled, possibly due to residual effect of last LH shot? Shot 22 ran well with LH power ramping from 500 to 1000+ kW over 400 ms, but shot 23, the last shot of the run predictably fizzled. |

| Mar 30 2007 09:07:26:920AM | 1070330001 | Ron Parker | The first shot will be a PLC controlled 10 kA OH1 only, no commutation, to check yesterday's magnetics problem and subsequent fix. |
| Mar 30 2007 09:09:29:043AM | 1070330001 | Ron Parker | We have set up the first plasma shot to reproduce 1070329015. The first few shots will be devoted to finish Greg's run from 1070329, which was aborted due to a problem with magnetics. Greg's shots will reproduce shots 15-18 from yesterday. |
| Mar 30 2007 09:31:38:090AM | 1070330001 | Ron Parker | The first shot will be a PLC controlled 10 kA OH1 only, no commutation, to check yesterday's magnetics problem and subsequent fix.
Delay in getting going this AM due to data system problems and LH people in cell putting in battle shorts. |
| Mar 30 2007 10:21:45:840AM | 1070330001 | Ron Parker | The test shot was successful as far as the magnetics were concerned, but did not hold OH1 current at 10 kA as set by the PLC. This problem is being trouble shot.
We'll try another test shot after the problem is fixed. |
| Mar 30 2007 10:27:42:467AM | 1070330002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 regulated at ~ 10 kA as programmed. A few magnetics errors came up, but may be due to low OH current. |
| Mar 30 2007 10:30:58:623AM | 1070330002 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 should be a plasma shot. |
| Mar 30 2007 10:39:58:640AM | 1070330003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 didn't go because OH1 current was still limited at 10 kA.
Try again on next shot. |
| Mar 30 2007 10:49:34:150AM | 1070330003 | Ron Parker | Short (hopefully) delay while Yuri and Joe trouble shoot the OH1 current programming problem. |
| Mar 30 2007 11:17:53:920AM | 1070330003 | Ron Parker | Ready for a shot! |
| Mar 30 2007 11:42:04:920AM | 1070330004 | Ron Parker | Shot 4 ran well, but disrupted in rampdown.
CPS shut LH off -- since LH is at low power, CPS will be disabled. |

Next: Reload shot 1070330007 |
| Mar 30 2007 01:22:06:607PM | 1070330010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 ran full length.
Next: Repeat shot 8 (with grill 0.5 mm closer to LH limiter) |
| Mar 30 2007 01:42:19:747PM | 1070330011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 ran well, disrupting at 200 kA in rampdown.
Randy taking over from Greg. Next: 40 kW/klystron, 400 ms pulse. Repeat shot 11. |
| Mar 30 2007 01:46:24:230PM | 1070330012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 fizzled, suspect between shot pulsing of beam into vacuum. |
| Mar 30 2007 02:25:20:823PM | 1070330013 | Ron Parker | Shot 13 went, as did RF.
Next: LH power increased to 600 kW Short delay to check fiber in power room. Bad fuse in TF cabinet needs to be replaced. Short delay just became longer (+10 min). |
| Mar 30 2007 03:01:49:870PM | 1070330013 | Ron Parker | Next shot will be a PLC controlled 50 kA TF test. |
| Mar 30 2007 03:08:59:980PM | 1070330014 | Ron Parker | Fuse repaired, plasma shot coming up. |
| Mar 30 2007 03:20:35:653PM | 1070330015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 was a weak fizzle. No apparent reason, try again. |
| Mar 30 2007 03:45:26:403PM | 1070330016 | Ron Parker | Shot 16 went through nicely, with LH power at ~700 kW at the FINT's and.
More LH power next shot. |
| Mar 30 2007 03:47:58:073PM | 1070330017 | Ron Parker | Shot 17 ended in a disruption caused by LH |
| Mar 30 2007 03:59:35:997PM | 1070330018 | Ron Parker | Disrupted again, well before LH (@0.45 s) |
| Mar 30 2007 04:13:59:683PM | 1070330019 | Ron Parker | Shot 19 fizzled. Try again (LH power ramped from 450 - 900 kW over 400ms) |
| Mar 30 2007 04:58:57:387PM | 1070330022 | Ron Parker | Shot 22 ran well, LH power ramped from 500 to 1000+ kW over 400 ms. It's possible to see a slight reduction in loop voltage, but this may be in the mind of the (or rather this) observer. |
