Today we will begin to carefully start plunging the WASP into start-up plasmas. This will allow us to calibrate the plunge dynamics of the WASP and validate its ability to take plasma data. We will at first require a standard field and current, low-density plasma, repeated several times. Once a well-controlled, repeatable, large inner gap has been demonstrated, we will begin plunging the WASP, shallowly at first until we gain confidence in our ability to control its motion. We will then attempt to optimize its plunge dynamics and calibrate the measurements of plunge depth. If time and conditions allow, we would also like to scan the density and field a bit and possibly try a few shots in upper null to explore a larger range of operating conditions. The other scanning probes (ASP and FSP) will also be exercised during these experiments, to verify their functionality and provide baseline readings to aid interpretation of the WASP data. Reasonable control of the outer gap will therefore also be required. If for any reason we do not feel comfortable plunging the probe into a plasma, it may be helpful if the field ramp down could be delayed until after the plasma is extinguished, to give us a short window (~100ms) when we could plunge the WASP with no plasma present. (Or we could do a TF only shot) Diagnostics WASP, FSP, ASP, FMP�??s Experimental Plan Shots 1-5: Demonstrate repeatable equilibrium with large, well-controlled inner gap and repeatable outer gap. Should be LSN at low density: 0.6x10^20. Ip=0.8 MA, Bt=5.4 Tesla. A good shot to dial up is 1060324005 (0.8MA, LSN, NL04=0.6x10^20, L Gap=14mm). We will increase the inner gap to ~15mm Shots 5-15: Repeat the same shot and vary probe plunge dynamics. Calibrate plunge depth and verify electrode functionality. Remaining Shots: Scan density from 0.3X10^20 to 1.4x10^20. If time remains try a few shots in USN. (Dial up shot 1060324002, similar to 1060324005, but USN). If time remains, scan field from 3-6 Tesla.

Engineering setup for Wednesday 3 April 2007 MP#465 WASP experiments Session leader: Smick Physics operator: Irby ECDC overnight in D2, pressure=2e-4 Torr. Rmin/Rdwell/Rmax = 44/45/103 cm. Bake at 60 C. Since this is the first run of the week, cooldown was begun early this morning to make sure structure will be cold for the run. **** We will want at least one C-Mod cycle test with gas as early as possible to check out data system and other systems. We will need a 50 kA TF test since work has been performed in the TF cabinets. We will remain in controlled access following the run to test the boronization system. **** The run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00. Power systems as on 1060324005: 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, LSN, with 12 mm inner gap A-coil configuration: normal [Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) NINJA pumped out disabled Enable the following gate valves and shutters: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Torvac setup: Gate valves open during pulse. We fully exercised the A-WASP probe and should have enough data to characterize its plunge motion. We also produced LSN and USN discharges with appropriate gaps for all probes. These can be used as starting points for the probe Mini-Proposals during the physics campaign. We identified a problem with the SE electrode on the A-WASP which seems to be going open occasionally. The problem repeatably appears on the second plunge starting at the point of maximum insertion. We did not get to a density or field scan. The ASP and FSP and the mirror probe were successfully exercised as well.

Cycle and gas tests were taken on shots 1 and 2. A timing error in the gas puff was fixed for shot 2 (tree needed an update). A 50 kA TF shot was taken on shot 3 since work had been done in the cabinets. A plasma attempt on shot 4 failed because of data system problems and bad magnetics signals. A 10 kA PLC controlled OH1 test was run on shot five to show that the data system and magnetics were working properly. Shots 6 and 7 were disruptions and we didn't have a plasma again until shot 14 before which 15 minutes of ECDC was done. The DNB had been firing on several previous shots w/o plasma and may have helped keep us from getting plasmas (mass 49, 69, 100, on RGA at mass 4 levels following fizzles). The DNB was turned off from shot 9 until we had three plasmas in a row that lasted into rampdown (DNB back on for shot 17). The machine ran extremely well the rest of the day with all plasmas going well into rampdown. On shot 27 we went to upper null operation for the first time since installation of the upper divertor hardware. The CIII light was about a factor of two higher compared to the lower null case and did not drop much during the run (MARFE, NINJA?). Brian reported that the upper gas box pressure was as high and 4 mTorr in these low density discharges, which bodes well for cryopump operation. Some conditioning of the J-Port antenna was done today and the D-Port antenna ran at the 1 MW level and actually did some heating (some h-modes?)
