Hydrogen recovery using disruptions

The purpose of these experiments is to force hydrogen recovery from
the material surfaces in C-Mod by thermal desorption by intentionally
disrupting ohmic plasmas. The transient heating of some
surfaces (dictated by the the disruption type) force the trapped
hydrogen to be released as H2. Previous experiments showed that
this method was efficient at removing the H2 once the plasma
stored energy reached a minimum value, which is consistent with the
physical picture described above since desorption is exponnentially
dependent on the peak surface temperature obtained. Since these are
ohmic plasmas, we use plasma current to set the stored energy.

We'll start with downward going VDE disruptions at 1 MA, 5.4 T, since this
was the condition that we previously found was most efficient
at H2 recovery. (reference shot #1050211026). The plan
is to repeat these as often as possible through the day. Based
on the results we may attempt a 1.2 MA disruption.

These experiments use the special conditions that the pump gate valves
are closed during the discharge and for 5 minutes afterward, with a
conductance limited RGA, this allows us to document the total H2, HD and D2
recovered from the surfaces.

Plan for Post-run testing of Real-time control generation of Power 
System Type 2 Fault.

Following completion of today's run, we will remain in Access Control
for testing of the DPCS_TYPE2_FAULT generation system. The software
has been tested off-line and is presently installed by turned off.
The fiber from DPCS output_31 has been tied into the fault chain 
at the TF cabinet, and the response of the system verified up to that 
point. The purpose of today's test is an end-to-end test of the system,
including the rest of the fault chain to the power supplies and the PLC
interface including Bypass function and fault ennunciation and latching.

Tests will be conducted by firing C-Mod shot cycles with no power supplies
energized and the air switch open. Some of the tests may require breakers 
to be closed.

1) With Bill Cochran monitoring the system from the power room, test response
to a 5V waveform, 0.5 sec wide pulse, drawn in PCS on DPCS output V_31 by the 
Physop (Rowan). This tests the downstream response which was not exercised
on Tuesday. If we think it's needed, we could test different pulse widths; 
this may be essential if the 0.5 sec pulse is not wide enough for the PLC to latch.

  * Airswitch and Breakers must both be open for any tests involving 
  * personnel in the power room. 

2) To test the bypass feature on the PLC, repeat the step 1 test with the 
 Bypass engaged at the PLC. We should see the output pulse from the DPCS
 output, but no Type 2 fault should be generated.  

3) The waveform MUST be removed from the PCS and the new shot loaded. 
Having that waveform left in the system will guarantee a Type2 fault 
on every shot.
To be sure it's gone, I recommend a full C-Mod shot cycle (No Power) to 
confirm that no fault is generated.

* Assuming the previous tests are successful, we should proceed to testing
of the software. These tests should not require personnel in the power room.

4) The next step is to verify the functionality of the software. I will turn the 
procedure node in the tree ON, and we will run another C-Mod No-Power cycle.
Under these conditions the fault should not be generated, since we don't expect 
any of the inputs to be out of range, but the routine does echo a message in the 
logfile stating that no errors were detected and no fault was generated.

5) Next, I will change the threshold condition on one input to ZERO, which 
should insure that a Type 2 fault will be generated by bitnoise on the input 
signal. We should see a fault and the report in the logfile, indicating which
input caused the fault and at what level. We should compare the timing of the
fault as received with the start of the DPCS output pulse. 

6) Finally, once satisfied that it is working, I will reload the nominal 
thresholds and we should take one last test cycle to verify that the software is 
no longer set up to fire on noise.

Once these tests are completed, we should be as safe as this system is capable 
of making us, which isn't very safe, but will hopefully be better than 
nothing. The tree node containing the dpcs_type2_fault procedure 
\hybrid::top.hardware.dpcs.loadables.procedures:output_pros:procedure_00
will be left in the ON state, until such time as the engineers provide an
independent control to prevent recurrence of the event of 1070322012. 

If problems arise with operation of this procedure, it can be disabled by
turning off the above node and/or bypassed using the PLC screen. At this time
modification of the parameters of the procedure is not under control of the 
Physics or Engineering Operator, and requires special knowledge of the software.
If use of the procedure is going to be prolonged, I will provide a relatively 
user-friendly interface for changing these settings.

C-Mod was run at BT = 5.4 T, 0.8 MA, and starting with nl_04 = 0.6. The DNB was modulated 0.15 s on, 0.05 s off, starting at 0.5 s (when the initial transients ceased) and ending at ~1.5 s. For the entire run BES used four adjacent fiber pairs separated poloidally by ~0.5 cm, and three different R locations of the fibers: R = 88.6, 87.5 and 86.2 cm. (The innermost position required removal of the outermost MSE fiber.) Cross-correlation analysis between one pair and the other three for each R location was performed from 0.5 s to 1.5 s (the beam window).

Although coherence and phase shifts were detected below 100 kHz (the ubiquitous D-alpha and/or impurity line radiation from the edge), nothing was detected above 100 kHz. This was the case for two or three slightly different filter passbands. We tried a higher plasma density, but obtained two Marfes and subsequent disruptions so went back down. We then fine-tuned the discharge (nl_04 = 0.8, Ip = 0.7 MA, Rsep = 0.9 m) to replicate discharges, e.g., 1070328026-28, 1070330008, for which BES detected a feature between ~100 to ~300 kHz. We saw nothing, however. There was perhaps a hint of something between 50 and 200 kHz at R = 87.5 cm with the density lowered to nl_04 ~ 0.5. Althouigh the signals at R = 86.2 cm exhibited beam-to-background ratios of almost unity, nothing was seen.

Additional filter tuning, density scans, etc. were not possible because of loss of shots from two no-power tests, two Marfes and subsequent disruptions, two fizzles, and another disruption.

Analysis will be performed to try to explain these results quantitatively.

Disruption H2 recovery

We obtained 3 downward VDE disruptions today (18, 20, 28) out of 10 attempted
plasma shots. Fizzles were a major impediment, in particular
after the shot 20 VDE. This was probably aggravated by our attempts
at changing the startup procedure, since on #28, when we returned
to our first startup condition (#18) we got the pulse.

On whole we recovered ~95 Torr-L of gas based on post-VDE pressures of
which ~50% is H (in H2 or HD molecular form). The H/H+D ratio had a strange
trajectory today.

Perhaps this data suggests that our repeated disruptions were actually starting
to sufficiently deplete the heated tiles that H recovery per disruption
was starting to decrease (a positive sign if true). The recovered H2 per VDE
was right in line with our previous 1 MA VDE cleaning disruptions, meaning
that per shot-cycle the H2 recovery is efficient. The problem is that the "ever-
mysterious-fizzles"
decrease the operational utility of the technique.

SL summary for DPCS_TYPE2_FAULT test:
Shots 31-35 were no-power tests of the new dpcs signal to 
trigger a type 2 fault on all the power supplies.

We only got as far as steps 1 and 2 of the run plan, 
using the drawn pulse waveforms. We found that the 
0.5 sec wide pulse was sufficient to trip all the 13.8kV supplies. 
Breakers opened on TF and PF; the EF3 breaker actually tripped 
early (shot 31) because of no-sync from alternator with breaker closed.

However, we found that the TMX contactors stayed in even with a
2 second wide pulse. Bill Cochran tried simulating a ground fault
(just near the point where the DPCS contact is opening) by pulling 
the wire and confirmed that that did cause a type2 and open the 
contactors. Why a pulse as long as 2 sec did not cause a fault is 
not clear. 

Shot 35 was a repeat of the test with 2sec pulse, but with the PLC
Manual Bypass set. We confirmed that in this case, NO Type 2 fault 
was generated. 

Testing of software was deferred to a later date, probably next maintenance
day.

The purpose of this run is to verify that the MSE specrum
components on the blue side of the thermal H-alpha position goes away with
the new tilted DNB configuration. We planned to have one shot to the He
gas-filled torus with TF, EF3 and EF4 on. This shot was to be compared with
the shot 1060725008 where we had the same conditions except the radial beam.
The result is that due to the failure in the spectrometer operation, we
couldn't get the shot.

Physop Summary Run 1070405

There were four experiments scheduled for today. Three were successful at some level. One failed due to a diagnostic setup error which was identified and corrected immediately after the run.

In general, C-Mod ran well. On the first shot, Amanda reported a locked mode. This was due to the A coils not being under hybrid control. This was remedied for the second shot. Two disruptions may have been due to the Ninja. This was not verified to the satisfaction of the Ninja operator, but the PO and SL elected not to spend the shots needed to do a conclusive test. Intentional disruptions in the second part of the run were difficult to recover from. Even 10 minutes of ECDC between shots did not work. Possibly impurities stirred up by the disruption were the source of the problem. Note that an inadvertent wall cleanliness test on the previous day using the DNB resulted in RGA detection of heavy molecules. There were two engineering faults, and these were traced to computer issues.

MP#474 BES broadband fluctuations, Session leader: Bravenec
These discharges are variants of 1070404021. The density was varied over a narrow range. The outer gap (rsep in the nomenclature of the SL) was decreased by approximately 0.01 m (rsep change from approximately 0.89 to 0.90m).
Of the 17 shots allocated to this experiment, there were 11 plasmas, 3 disruptions, 2 fizzles, 1 engineering failure.

MP412a Disruptive H/D, Session leader: Whyte/Blip
The target shot was 1050211026 which is a 1 MA, triggered VDE. To load this target shot, it was necessary to recalculate predictors due to the loss of F11 flux loop and to remove some offsets due to changes in PCS. This was completed before the run and the result stored in segment 3 to facilitate quick change of experiments during the run. In fact, the first shot for this experiment was the expected VDE. Recovery from the VDE was a painfully long series of fizzles. Possibly impurities stirred up by the disruption were the source of the problem. Note that an inadvertent wall cleanliness test on the previous day using the DNB resulted in RGA detection of heavy molecules. 11 shots were allocated to this experiment. There were 3 intentional disruptions, 7 fizzles, and 1 engineering failure.


MP#460 Test of Effect of Fast ions on MSE with perpendicular injection, Session leader: Jin-seok Ko
This experiment was allowed two beam into gas shots at the end of the day. The change-over to the required discharge was flawless although it is a non-standard setup for C-Mod. The experiment failed because of a diagnostic setup blunder. This was identified immediately after the run and corrected.

This was a straightforward experiment which only required the PO to draw a waveform and push the button. It was allocated 5 engineering test shots.
