| First half of the run, optimization of the fast vertical gains:
-Start with target 1050706022, with lower peak elongation 1.7 and increase to 1.8 (2/3 shots). Seek for max elongation achievable with old set of gains. -Change gains to the nominal optimum P=3, D=5.5. Try a few shots to make sure that these gains work for the same target plasma (1/2 shots). Increase elongation to 1.8 -Total 9/13 shots for the first half of the run. Second half of the run, ITER shape: -Target 1040127005 is more difficult, it might require a few shots to get the equilibrium right. -Start with lower current and smaller elongation k=1.7 and increase to the target Ip=1.6MA, k>1.8 (3/4 shots). -Because of the large current, feedback control of lock modes is essential. -Change control gains to the nominal optimum P=3, D=5.5. Try a few shots and optimize gains if needed (4/5 shots). -If there is time, play with other shape parameters (3/4 shots). -Total 10/13 shots for the second half of the run. |

| Run 1070406 aimed at pushing to high elongations while looking for the optimal (most stable) set of control gains for the fast vertical loop.
Target plasma was 1050706022, but with slightly different vertical programming (-5mm in the flat-top). Also the RXL needed to be modified to increase clearance at the divertor. During the run the RCUR programming was tweaked during the flat-top to squeeze the plasma and produce high elongations. The proportional gain was scanned P=2.5,3,3.5,4,4.5 with derivative gain fixed at 5. At low proportional gain and high elongation k>1.85 the plasma experiences a low frequency (about 50Hz) vertical oscillation ending with a disruption. At high proportional gain and similar elongation, it is a high frequency (about 100Hz) vertical oscillation that goes unstable. Best shot of the day was 1070406016 (well reproducible: see 1070406017) with peak elongation >1.85. In this case P=3 and D=5. Derivative gain was therefore scanned for the same target plasma D=5,6,7,8. The vertical trace seemed to have lower activity at high derivative gains D=7,8. Optimal proportional gain seems to lie in the range P = 3 - 4, while optimal derivative gain is probably in the range D = 5 - 8. Last shot of the day 1070406030 aimed at the highest elongation with P=5, D=8 and DPCS cycle down to 72us (limit speed, no samples lost during discharge), but ended with a disruption at 1.44s. All shots aiming at elongations >1.85 ended with disruptions. |

| Summary
________ A slow start with chopper and data system problems. Then we got into a good groove. The plasmas here routinely produce sustained ohmic H-modes lasting of order 1 second. Elongations to 1.85+ were obtained. However, despite obtaining new record elongation and n/n_c, it was not demonstrated that the proposed adjustments to gains are a big win. See Session Leader for more analysis. Scorecard _________ Setting date to that of current shot. Change if necessary. | Apr 6 2007 08:37:17:087AM | Ian Hutchinson | Load shot from 10705028. Load segment 2 from 1050706022 seg 2.
Messages: DPCS working copy not superceded. Set zcur to -5mm from zero. This ought to stabilize the shot noticeably. Load. This is the shot we start from
| Apr 6 2007 09:00:22:860AM | Ian Hutchinson | Setup of segment 3 for part 2 of MP.
Import segment 2 from 1040127005. Message: Error opening dpcs tree shot. Then follow the Wolfe instructions as follows: 1. RCUR : Bring up Edit Wire screen and recalculate (CALL) predictors for all three rows. You will see the date change in the alg-version window. When done hit Apply, and ok the factor screen. If you use apply instead of OK the edit wire screen stays in place and you can just go down the row of buttons on the main PCS screen. 2. ZCUR : CALL the predictor (only the middle one is active). Hit APPLY and ok the factor screen 3. zero_03 : I think we want to change this back to being the fast ZCUR. Do a LOAD WIRE from Wire 10 in the same segment as you are working in. Leave the Directory as pcs_scratch and the shot number as -1. This will change the contents to ZCUR. Now CALL the predictor, note that the alg-version date changes, and hit APPLY and ok the factor screen. 4. CLEARIN: CALL the predictor. Note that this will remove the 12700 offset value; that's good because you were advised to zero this in one of the messages you acknowledged earlier. APPLY, ok factor, ... 5 -8. RXL, ZXL, RXU, ZXU: Same drill, CALL the predictors, APPLY, ok the factors, move on. 9. bolofeed: You want to change this to the B21_PROJ feedback algorithm for the A-coils. There are four steps: a) Do LOAD WIRE from a segment that has this predictor; if you started from a shot from today then there is one in Segment 4, wire 9. Leave directory as "pcs_scratch" and shot=-1. b) CALL the predictor (I'm not positive this is needed, but there is a more recent version than the one in seg4 and I don't know what changed. Hit APPLY and acknowledge the message from P_INFO and ok the factor screen. c) Bring up the Integrator Gates screen (button at bottom of segment window) and move the start of Gate C to 0.2 seconds (or earlier). OK this screen. d) Bring up the V#01-16 Screen. It will probably put up two pop-ups about changing the names of outputs. Acknowledge these. Zero out the waveform for the Acoil_VOLT (2nd trace in right hand column). Ok the window. 10. ZCUR: You don't want this one any more, so hit ZERO_ALL. Hit APPLY and acknowledge the P_INFO pop-up. If you get a factor screen, ok that too. 11-12: zero_11,zero_12 : No action required 13. EF2_BY_EF4: no action required 14. NL_04: If the SL wants a different density then reprogram it. Otherwise, no action required. 15. IC_EF4: no action required. We may want to increase the program value later in the run. 16. IP: CALL the predictor. This will have the effect of zeroing the 70000 amp offset, and it can't hurt. If the SL wants to change the current program to a lower value than 1.6MA ( I recommend it) then make the change. OK the screen and the factor screen when it comes up. For some reason, the TF seems to have been programmed to -147kA, instead of -150kA. Not that it matters a lot, but this should probably be changed (V#01-16 screen). Wire 3 gains to d=5.5 to compensate for the change of gains.
| Apr 6 2007 09:19:13:073AM | 1070406001 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at .157s, because chopper did not work.
Also got no gas puff, or at least no puff diagnostics. |
| Apr 6 2007 09:34:49:153AM | 1070406002 | Ian Hutchinson | Chopper and gas test.
Got gas, and diagnostics look ok. No chopper. Call all magnetics predictors in segment 2. |
| Apr 6 2007 10:35:49:473AM | 1070406003 | Ian Hutchinson | No power data hang. |
| Apr 6 2007 10:49:06:917AM | 1070406005 | Ian Hutchinson | Finally got a data cycle to run. Chopper test works. |
| Apr 6 2007 11:00:28:810AM | 1070406006 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma.Chopper is working. Substantial noise but there's no obvious instability.
Change fast zcur gains. D to 5.5. from 6., P to 3 from 4. |
| Apr 6 2007 11:17:22:037AM | 1070406007 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at 1.48. EF1U is saturated at this point (in prior shot too)
Reduce nl04 early to prevent density overshoot. Reduce RXU from .015 to .012 to prevent EF1U saturation. |
| Apr 6 2007 11:27:36:120AM | 1070406008 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
Br offset to -0.4 mT from -0.7 mT. |
| Apr 6 2007 11:40:25:030AM | 1070406009 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma. Ramps down.
D to 5.0 from 5.5. nl04 to .9e20. Attempts to fix the nl04 gain not working at the moment. |
| Apr 6 2007 12:14:22:293PM | 1070406010 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Call nl04 predictor to correct calibration. Lower Rcur to .653 from .6545 at 1.5 s, a 1.5mm inward motion, should make the plasma more unstable, as requested. |
| Apr 6 2007 12:15:03:370PM | 1070406011 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Reduce Rcur by another 1.5mm to .6515. |
| Apr 6 2007 12:34:46:723PM | 1070406012 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Reduce RXL by 5mm at 1.3s. Rcur to .6500 at 1.45s. (A further 1.5mm reduction). Tweak RXU at late time. Still trying to avoid EF1U saturation. |
| Apr 6 2007 12:45:12:913PM | 1070406013 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
RXL decreased a further 3mm to .007 at 1.3s Rcur to 0.6485, a further 1.5 mm reduction at 1.45s. |
| Apr 6 2007 01:09:40:597PM | 1070406014 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Rcur to .647. RXL to .003 (4mm) Observe that the Zcur P is now at 4 whereas, it was supposed to have been set to 3 at shot 6. This appears to be operator error, but should be checked. |
| Apr 6 2007 01:23:01:477PM | 1070406015 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
P gain to 3 from 4. No other changes. |
| Apr 6 2007 01:47:25:053PM | 1070406016 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. Slightly lower amplitude chopper fluctuations.
Rcur to .6455 at 1.45s. This is what I meant to do. But it does not seem to have happened. |
| Apr 6 2007 01:56:06:623PM | 1070406017 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma till rampdown. I think this is just a repeat of the previous shot.
The elongation does not substantially increase. Rcur .6455 really really. Load. |

| Apr 6 2007 04:58:22:860PM | 1070406028 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown. Oscillation amplitude reduced. Period 17ms, but with higher harmonics.
P to 8 from 7. |
| Apr 6 2007 05:01:14:780PM | 1070406029 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma till rampdown.
Rcur to .6455 (1.5mm lower). Try for record. |
| Apr 6 2007 05:17:41:833PM | 1070406030 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma disrupts at 1.43. Several injections, so not entirely a fair test, but
this is a VDE. |
