MP#461 Zero Loop Voltage development
SL: Wolfe
PO; Rowan

Start with seg2 based on 1070330013, a lower hybrid target shot.
We will need the Observer Procedure dpcs_lowpass_obs loaded and turned on
on Wire 12. Use the following values on the setup screen:
  Parameters: {TAVG: .01}
  Segments: 2
  Wires: 12

Wire 12 will be set up for PSI0, predictor alg = fluxihh,
Keyword Args: rcenter=.55, zcenter= -.41
Begin with derivative gain of 1, turned on at 1.0sec
Waveform should be flat at 0.

It may be best to load a seg2 based on one of my simulation shots, just to
get started, and zero the controller for step 1. A prepared shot to try
is 1070410303.

We will be more or less following the shot sequence in the miniproposal,
although some runs with the Alcasim code suggest that we may need to
free-lance a bit.

1. With the controller on wire 12 zeroed, run the basic shot and monitor
observer and PID outputs. Adjust filter time constant for smooth response,
and D gain to avoid PID saturation, give levels in the range of other
   wires. [3 shots]

2. Load (call) the controller. We want Alg xcontihh NO KEYWORDS. time const.
   of 40 to start.
Turn Ip wire gain off at 1.0 sec. We should also modify the
V waveforms in Segment 2 to put the
pre-programmed voltages on all supplies, especially OH1 and the OH2's,
to zero at 1.0 sec. If we haven't modified things too much in step 1,
   a pre-loaded shot is 1070410302

Observe rampdown and adjust D gain to get stable low surface
voltage while not overdriving power supplies. If ramp-down extends past 1.5
sec, it may be necessary to reprogram waveforms to keep position and
xpoints close to original. Simulations indicate there may be a problem
keeping EF2's from going to zero as current decreases and EF3 drops.
   Things to try:
     Drop IC_EF4 gain after 1sec, increase EF2byEF4
Monitor PSI0 wire (on 11) with rcenter,zcenter=[.45,0.] (clearin ref)
Maybe turn both on, feedback on average?

   [5-10 shots]

3. Simulation runs indicate that we may have trouble getting the surface
voltage to really get to zero due to swinging of EF3 and EF1 and EF2 trying
to maintain RCUR and CLEARIN (I think it's CLEARIN). We may need to try
tweaking the balance of the other gains, or the PSI0 controller. May also
need to increase the gain beyond what's allowed in PCS; could move to
wire 10 with ten times the D gain (time constant). [time remaining]

Hydrogen recovery using disruptions

The purpose of these experiments is to force hydrogen recovery from
the material surfaces in C-Mod by thermal desorption by intentionally
disrupting ohmic plasmas. This continues from last week's experiments
when we intentionally (1070405) and unintentionally (1070406) made
VDE's at ~ 1 MA. Our observations from those shots showed that
the total and H gas recovery was decreasing after repeated VDE's to the
same location. H plasma content would temporarily increase in subsequent
shots and then decrease. This all seems consistent with temperature
driven permeation and release of the H from certain areas that get
heated during the disruption.

Unordinary experimetnal requirements

- Gate valves close during shot and ~1-5 minutes afterward
- We will want to be able to vary the gate valve close time during the run
- Pre and post shot RGA on the bypass valve is essential
- Check H/H+D diagnostic

Plan today

1. Check back on standard downward 1 MA VDE and diagnose H/D recovery
to see it is consistent with where we left off last week.
Reference shot: 1070405018

2. Repeat 1 at 1.2 MA.

3. Upward VDE at 1.2 MA

4. Attempt to heat inner wall with a 1 MAdisruption. Intentionally turn up
vertical field (RCUR control) to rapidly push the plasma into the center
column.

5. Repeat 4 with 1.2 MA

Fizzle strategey: Wait until base pressure is ~1e-6 Torr. To hasten
this we will set the gate valve close time to the minimum required
for RGA and vessel pressure diagnosis.

dnb current is higher and measured spectrum larger. we will give Dexter another try next shot to
improvve the dnb current.

Discovery: we have NOT been puffing pure helium. It has been a mixture of mostly
deuterium and some helium. this will be fixed on the next shot: next shot should
be pure helium puffing.

SL_SUMMARY for MP461 part of 1070410
SL: WOlfe
PO: Rowan

We only got two plasma shots devoted to this miniproposal today.
Shot#1 was the baseline case, essentially a re-run of 1070330013
with the PSI) observer loaded on wire 12, and the dpcs_lowpass_obs
procedure on for that wire, with an effective filter time of 0.01 sec
The derivative gain was set to 1.0 at 1sec, and the controller zeroed.
The observer was consistent with the EFIT vsurf value of -1.4V, and
the PID_OUT signal on wire 12 was essentially flat at -0.155.

We next had a series of data system related problems, including a
repeat of the magnetics timing error and other bad trigger effects we
had seen on 1070404004. Took an OH test, which was ok, then had a different
data hang in INIT which resulted in a no-power shot.

Shot#5 was the first try with the controller enabled, and the
Ip gain turned down. Also, we dropped the voltage feedforward on
everything to zero at 1sec. The conroller time constant was set to
40, resulting in an effective "Physics PID"=0.04, a very small value.
The result was very similar to the Alcasim simulation 1070410302.
Plasma started rampdown at 1sec, disrupting at 1.26sec at a current
of 330kA. There were thrashes in RCUR and CLEARIN at 1sec. The surface
voltage dropped to -0.6V, with the OH currents holding flat or reversing
and slow decays on the EF2's and EF3. The EF1 currents continued to swing
positive at essentially the same rate as before 1sec. One difference
from the simulation is that li rose from 1.5 to 2.5, resulting in a growing
vertical instability culminating in the disruption at 1.26sec.
I believe this result should be interpreted as what we get when we effectively
turn the Ip gain off, I think the wire 2 gain is probably effectively zero.
Comparison of Alcasim simulations 1070410302, with gains as in shot#5,
and 1070411301 with the PSI0 gain set to zero at 1sec, give the same
loop voltage; the difference in the oh1 output demand is about .02V out
of a pre-1sec value of ~2V.

For shot 6 we loaded a shot with the OH feedforward voltages ramping down
to zero at 1sec, instead of dropping abruptly, to help with the thrash
at 1sec, before proceeding to higher gains. However, we experienced a
recurrence of the bad trigger event as on shot#2.
Following a long session of head-scratching, along with Joe and Yuri and
Josh, we threw a live scope on a decoder output so we could see if it
saw an early START trigger in INIT, and turned the run over to beam-into-gas.

The power system response to the magnetics errors we've had on 1070404004
and on shots 2 and 6 today seems relatively benign, basically the OH2's
go to -28kA and -22kA becaulse the Br0 is bogus. The mis-timing of the
magnetics seems to be identical on all three shots. However, other triggers
seem to be coming early in INIT, including the YAG firing. Irby sees
"impossible" signals on TCI, Brian's gas signals are at the wrong times,
and the Halpha and CIII signals disappear completely. The problem did
not recur for the rest of the day, but that certainly doesn't mean it's
fixed. Tom and Josh did revert some CAMAC software, but nobody has a
good idea of how this event could be software related.

Try setting up a case for the start of today's run.
Reload 1070409313 from my simulations yesterday.
Drop EF2byEF4 gain back to 2 at 1sec
zero wire 10
change dpcs_lowpass_obs WIRES back to 12 (from [10,12])
Note that ICEF4 gain is still at 2; thought I'd removed that.
Leave it for now.
PSI0 settings:
 Decrease PSI0 D to 1.0; Change factor to .001
Controller is set with TAUOPT=0.3; call it and look at printout
It suggests a max time const of 212.156; current value is 40.
Leave at 40. Note Physics PID is 0.04, which seems very small.
Tweak voltage waveforms to get the zero at 1sec.

Simulate: It seems to have brought up more windows today
than it did yesterday, lots of power supply windows?
Ignore them.
Source shot:1070330013, Zsig=0.6, simulink load from 1070330013
Skip precharge; and it's running
Forgot to do the build all! And I'm taking shot 1.
Do that again, build and take 1070410301
It's getting a little bit vertically unstable as itramps down?
The OH1s turn around, EF1 continue to ramp.
Aout 12 is at -.5V; CLEARIN and RCUR both jump.
OK, that's in the can. Could load from it.

Apr 10 2007 07:38:31:113AMSteve Wolfe
See if it helps to change the controller
Remove the tauopt switch; the coefficients are
quite different. This time it offers a tau=182
leave at 40., physics pid still .04

Build it and try a shot.
1070410302: Still gives only about -0.5V.
There's a thrash at the change, maybe too abrupt on the
feedforward voltages.
All the error signals and pid values drop after I switch
to loop voltage.

Apr 10 2007 07:52:26:713AMSteve Wolfe
Copy the V waveforms from seg3 to get a setup shot with these
unmodified. Turn off controller on wire 12
reset Ip gain to 9.

Sim shot=1070410303 (this will be starting point, if it works.)
Seems to have.

Apr 10 2007 08:41:52:577AMSteve Wolfe
To see the extra output provided by the Psi0 wire,
turn it on without turning off the others (let them fight)

1070410304: Ip and Vloop control both on.
Ip wins, no drop in current. The aout voltage doesn't seem
to even notice. That implies that the effective gain is very
small, which is consistent with the "Physics PID" of 0.04,
compare numbers of order unity elsewhere. The diff is really in
the noise.

1070410305: Try again with higher gain, D=10. This time I see
the current come down a little, and the aout12 drops a tenth
or so, momentarily. The oh1 difference demand shows a 0.6V spike
at 1sec. I think this makes sense, it takes a little while for
the current control PID wire to move; when it does, it doubles,
-0.5 to -1, which seems to be what is required to overcome the
wire 12 demands, which goes from 0 to -1.7.

Out of time, ready to start looking at real plasmas
Shot#1: Should repeat 1070330013, but with psi0 predictor,pidout
on wire 12 (Controller is zeroed). Simulation ref is 1070410303.
The PID12 output on 303 was -0.15, aout12~-1.3V.

Plasma full length. Aout 12 (deriv)=-1.4V straight across.
Pid12=-.155, right on the simulation value.

New scopes are blowing themselves away. Gas puff traces are
screwed up, something at 8.5sec
Shot looks nominal.

Let's go on and load from 1070410302

Shot#2: load from 1070410302. Should have phys D=.04,
voltages to zero, Ip P->0 all at t=1.0sec
Dud or fizzle? Something bad happended to magnetics. signal is at 1.7sec
NO spectroscopy signals.
OH2 currents are badly out of balance.
This is like what happened last week (Thursday?), bad gate and trigger
to magnetics.
Gas signals still missing (invisible data at 7.5 to 8.5 sec)

Setup for a no power shot.

OH2 currents are badly out of balance.
This is like what happened last week (Thursday?), bad gate and trigger
to magnetics.
Gas signals still missing (invisible data at 7.5 to 8.5 sec)

Setup for oh1 nocomm PLC test to see if magnetics timing comes back.

Shot#3:Setup for oh1 nocomm PLC test to see if magnetics timing comes back.

OH1 ran. Magnetics timing back to normal.
Spec signals are back. Still no piezo driver signals; can live without
those.

Last time, it didn't come back. Cross fingers and proceed, doesn't
seem to be too dangerous.

Shot#4: Repeat shot 2, try for plasma with weak D gain on psi0.

Apr 10 2007 10:44:18:250AM1070410005Steve Wolfe
Shot#5: Repeat shot 2, try for plasma with weak D gain on psi0.
ref 1070410302.

plasma rampdown starts at 1sec, disrupts at 1.26, 330kA.
Vsurf to -.6V, EF1's still ramping as in simulation.
li is growing from 1.5 to 2.5; left gap has a big thrash,
so does right gap, CLEARIN.
It looks distressingly like the simulations.
CLEARIN is recovering slowly, the RCUR isn't.
It also develops a vertical instability because n/nc grows,
because nc drops with rising li. Elongation isn't growing.

Try making the VOH's go to zero smoothly before 1sec
instead of abruptly. Question is, will that reduce the thrash?

Apr 10 2007 10:48:02:420AM1070410006Steve Wolfe
Shot#6: Repeat 5 with oh voltages reprogrammed.
Dud or fizzle.
Magnetics again; and spectroscopy.
Like shot 2.

Something on the camac highway is having a stroke.

Apr 10 2007 12:56:21:480PM1070410006Steve Wolfe
Trigger problem is mysterious and potentially more dangerous
on plasma shots than on beam-into-gas. A diagnostic is being
set up to look for multiple or mistimed START pulses.

I will turn over the run to Scott and Ko for the MSE beam
experiment.
