Morning run plan
SL: Schmidt
MP: 473

Shot plan:
1) Try to duplicate results from shot 1060728011 (same current, same density, same LH parameters)
2) Try to duplicate results from shot 1060728014 (same current, same density, same LH parameters)
purpose: lower the density to try to see hxr signal levels similar to last campaign
3) Start ne scan with long LH pulses, 60 deg phasing, ~500 kW. Scan peak densities 1e20, 1.25e20, 1.5e20 (if we have time, 1.75e20, 2e20, and 0.75e20)

This will be a half day run in the afternoon following Andrea. The plan is to investigate the effect of using NINJA to modify the edge density in front of the LH grill. We hope to find that puffing D2 gas from the A/B limiter will locally increase density in front of the top rows of the LH antenna (the two are magnetically connected), thus decreasing reflection coef for low density shots.

NINJA firing D2 gas at 1 second, LH at .7 seconds. Starting shot will be 1070330007.

NINJA will start with 12psi. We will increase the pressure by 5psi per shot until we see a increase in density and/or decrease in reflection coef. (4 shots)

At this point, move the plasma away from the outer wall by 10mm( 4 shots), then 20mm (4 shots) and repeat NINJA pressure scan.

MP 473: Lower Hybrid Checkout

Session leaders: A. Schmidt and G. Wallace
Physics operator: J. A. Snipes

Overnight ECDC in Deuterium.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1070330007

A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
pumpout and fill NINJA with 12 psi D2 Hybrid disabled

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open

Key diagnostics: Hard x ray array

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ICRF Setup: No ICRF

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LH Setup: LH required at moderate power ~ 1 MW
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Run plan: First load from shot 1070330007 except reduce Ip to 0.6 MW and go to as low
a density as possible perhaps nl04 ~ 3 x 10^19 m^-2. We will be trying
to reproduce shots 1060728011 and 014 at 0.6 MA and 1 MA at low density
but we will use the setup from this year's shot to avoid DPCS problems.
Then increase the density in steps up to perhaps nl04 ~ 8 x 10^19 m^-2
looking for changes in LH coupling and hard x ray profiles.
For the later part of the run, we will sit at nl04 = 8 x 10^19 m^-2
and vary the NINJA gas puff to look for effects on LH coupling.

Summary:

We started the day trying to reproduce conditions from the 2006 campaign (so far this campaign, there has been little/no HXR signal during LH). We established high HXR signal, high ECE nonthermal signal, and significant loop voltage drops in shots 1-3 and 5 (shot 4 was at higher density and showed no fast electron evidence). At this point, we had seen clear evidence of fast electrons and current drive at nl04=4e19 and NO evidence of fast electrons at nl04=8e19. Moving in steps of 1e19, we raised the density from nl04=4e19 to nl04=7.5e19 during shots 8-10 to see where the density threshold was. Fast electrons were detectable at nl04=6e19, but not nl04=7.5e19.

Thinking this might be an accessibility issue, we raised the field from 5.4 T to 7 T and lowered density back to 6e19. Then we slowly raised density in increments of 1e19, successfully up to nl04=1e20, where fast electron evidence disappeared (shots 12-16).

Thinking that we were again hitting an accessibility limit, we changed from 60 degree phasing to 90 degree phasing and 120 degree phasing. We found evidence of fast electrons at nl04=1e20 for both of the higher phasings (shots 17-20).

For shots 21+, we brought the density back down to nl04=8e19, brought the phasing back to 60 degrees, and raised the current from 800 kA to 1.2 MA (there is some evidence that higher total current is correlated with higher LHCD efficiency). This resulted in a number of LH trips, followed by disruptions and fizzles. It appears that the LH trips were due to extremely low density at the grill due to the increased current. We attempted to get the LH coupling back by puffing gas with the ninja system, with no success. The gas puffing brought up the core density as much as it brought up the edge density (we were hoping to bring up the edge density preferentially).

It was a good run with some interesting results on the Lower Hybrid operation for a number of plasma conditions.
Density was scanned over a fairly broad range. The TF was varied from 4.3 T to 7 T and the plasma current was
varied from 0.5 MA to 1.2 MA. The high field discharges were set to rampdown the TF at 1.2 s, but all of the
shape parameters were not adjusted in time accordingly and this may have contributed to the disruptions in the
rampdown for the high current discharges. This programming was corrected for the last two discharges 25 and 26
but they were both fizzles, so it was not possible to test them. I recommend to the next physop to start with
shot 25 to run a 1.2 MA, 7T shot in the future and it should go. The startup was not varied hardly at all
throughout the day and was quite reliable until we got disruptions. There were some runaways in the startup
and they were eliminated by a PG3 gas tweak in the breakdown phase on shot 17. There were some TF fuses blown
when we went to high TF, but they were quickly replaced. Otherwise, the machine ran very well today. Of 26
shots, there were 22 full length plasmas, 4 fizzles following disruptions, no duds, and no system faults.

Apr 11 2007 11:01:46:783AM1070411006Andrea SchmidtLowered density to 3e19 --> LH coupling went away. Will try gas puffing on next shot.
Apr 11 2007 11:01:05:457AM1070411007Andrea SchmidtPuffed gas to get density higher near grill. Density shot up, still no LH coupling. Will raise density to 4e19 nl04 for next shot.
Apr 11 2007 10:59:33:283AM1070411008Andrea SchmidtStill no LH coupling. Next shot will raise density to 6e19 nl04.
Apr 11 2007 11:13:11:180AM1070411009Andrea SchmidtRaised density to 6e19. LH coupling came back. Loop voltage dropped, ECE nonthermal signal strong. HXR has no baseline drift, but appears to increase during LH (post-processing needed). Will raise density to 7e19 for next shot.
Apr 11 2007 11:42:37:470AM1070411010Andrea SchmidtRaised density to 7e19 nl04. LH coupling still fine. Lost most visible nonthermal ECE, loop voltage change, and probably hxr too (post-processing needed). Next shot will be back at 6e19 nl04, at 4.3 T field, for an ECE calibration.
Apr 11 2007 11:51:32:583AM1070411011Andrea SchmidtLowered density to 6e19 nl04. Lowered field to 4.3 T for an ECE calibration. Next shot will be at high field (7 T).
Apr 11 2007 12:55:24:640PM1070411012Andrea SchmidtRaised field to 7 T. LH tripped a little early. Will redo this shot for 13.
Apr 11 2007 01:10:31:583PM1070411013Andrea SchmidtSame as shot 12 to get full LH pulse. Next shot will be same but with higher density (7e19 nl04).
Apr 11 2007 01:42:40:860PM1070411014Andrea SchmidtRaised density (7e19 nl04). Nonthermal ECE and HXR still present. Very little loop voltage response. Will raise density to 8e19 nl04 on next shot.
Apr 11 2007 02:23:31:017PM1070411015Andrea SchmidtDensity did not get raised in this shot. Same results as shot 14. Next shot will raise density.
Apr 11 2007 02:33:07:017PM1070411016Andrea SchmidtDensity raised to 1e20 nl04 (9e19 requested). No more ECE. Will try same shot, 90 degree approx phasing next shot.
Apr 11 2007 02:34:13:717PM1070411017Andrea SchmidtPhasing changed to 90 degree approximate. ECE nonthermal signal still apparent.
Apr 11 2007 02:34:59:530PM1070411017Andrea SchmidtPhasing changed to 90 degree approximate. ECE nonthermal signal still apparent. Next shot will be same (hopefully density will be more constant during the shot and LH won't trip).
Apr 11 2007 02:44:37:980PM1070411018Andrea SchmidtSame as shot 17. ECE present (but low), no loop voltage change. Next shot will change LH phasing to 120 approx, everything else the same.

Physics Operator Comments
Apr 11 2007 08:37:05:557AM1070411001Joseph SnipesShot 1: Loaded shot 1070330007 and then changed Ip to 0.5 MA and nl04 to 3 x 10^19 m^-2. This should nearly
repeat the desired shot 1060728011 without having to change all of the DPCS settings for the old shot.
Apr 11 2007 09:10:56:617AM1070411001Joseph SnipesShot 1: Good shot. Got a brief LH pulse from 0.7 to 0.72 s. Highly non-thermal ECE on GPC8. GPC1 is dead
for some reason. Got the desired density. Lots of runaways after 0.7 s.
Apr 11 2007 09:26:50:373AM1070411002Joseph SnipesShot 2: Good shot. Got a brief LH pulse from 0.72 to 0.8 s up to 300 kW. Highly non-thermal ECE on GPC8.
GPC1 is still dead for some reason.
Apr 11 2007 09:35:06:547AM1070411003Joseph SnipesShot 3: Good shot. Runaways starting early. Flash visible in the video image on the LH grill at 1.2 s.
LH pulse from 0.7 to 1.2 s at 700 kW.
Apr 11 2007 09:48:45:473AM1070411004Joseph SnipesShot 4: Loaded shot 1070330007 with Ip = 0.8 MA and nl04 = 8 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 10:05:45:403AM1070411005Joseph SnipesShot 5: Enabled DNB gatevalve. DNB should be on from 0.4 to 1.4 s. Lowered nl04 to 4 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 10:27:21:630AM1070411006Joseph SnipesShot 6: Lowered nl04 to 3 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 10:36:04:477AM1070411007Joseph SnipesShot 7: NINJA puff at 1.0 s to change LH coupling. Good shot. Density increases to nl04 = 6 x 10^19 m^-2
after the NINJA puff.
Apr 11 2007 10:49:17:060AM1070411008Joseph SnipesShot 8: Increased nl04 to 4 x 10^19 m^-2. NINJA turned off. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 11:03:14:237AM1070411009Joseph SnipesShot 9: Increased nl04 to 6 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 11:27:39:123AM1070411010Joseph SnipesShot 10: Increased nl04 to 7 x 10^19 m^-2. Got an Ohmic ELMy H-mode from 1.2 to 1.49 s. It appears that the LH
induced the H-mode, but it remained in H-mode long after the LH turned off. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 12:04:30:010PM1070411011Joseph SnipesShot 11: Lowered TF current to 119 kA to go to 4.3 T after t=0.
Ohmic H-mode from 1.39 to 1.57 s. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 12:49:20:857PM1070411012Joseph SnipesShot 12: Raised TF current to 194 kA to go to 7 T from 0 to 1.2 s. Good shot but LH tripped early.
Short delay to replace two fuses on the TF.
Apr 11 2007 12:54:35:983PM1070411013Joseph SnipesShot 13: Repeat. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 01:19:27:057PM1070411014Joseph SnipesShot 14: Raised nl04 to 7 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 01:51:31:613PM1070411015Joseph SnipesShot 15: Raised nl04 to 8 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot. Still have early runaways.
Forgot to load the density change into the model so the density programming
remained at 7 x 10^19 m^-2.
Apr 11 2007 02:07:18:730PM1070411016Joseph SnipesShot 16: Increased prepuff by 3 ms to 27 ms duration. Raised nl04 to 8 x 10^19 m^-2. Still got early
runaways. Startup looks a bit worse also. Othwerwise a good shot.
Apr 11 2007 02:30:17:613PM1070411017Joseph SnipesShot 17: Increased PG3 gas in segment 1 from 0.014 s to 0.03 s to attempt to get rid of the early runaways.
That got rid of the early runaways. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 02:43:28:013PM1070411018Joseph SnipesShot 18: Repeat. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 03:04:14:330PM1070411019Joseph SnipesShot 19: Repeat. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 03:18:28:837PM1070411020Joseph SnipesShot 20: Repeat. Good shot.
Apr 11 2007 03:57:42:523PM1070411021Joseph SnipesShot 21: Raised Ip to 1.2 MA and reduced nl04 to 7 x 10^19 m^-2. Disrupted in the rampdown at 1.66 s
around 0.8 MA. EF2U coil stress > 50% of allowable apparently because the
Ip ramp rate is too large on the rampup. Otherwise, it is a good shot.
Apr 11 2007 04:04:58:980PM1070411022Joseph SnipesShot 22: Reduced Ip ramp up rate so that it is programmed to reach 0.9 MA at 0.4 s and 1.2 MA at 0.6 s.
Started Ip rampdown at 1.2 s to match the TF rampdown. NINJA puff at 0.8 s. Fizzle!
Apr 11 2007 04:33:28:413PM1070411024Joseph SnipesShot 23: Try again. Disrupted in rampdown at 1.32 s at 1 MA.
Apr 11 2007 04:34:08:117PM1070411024Joseph SnipesShot 24: Fizzle!
Apr 11 2007 04:47:32:043PM1070411025Joseph SnipesShot 25: Changed the parameters in All Ps in segment 2 to ramp down at 1.2 s with Ip and BT so that the shape
ramps down with the field and current. LPI to fire a Li pellet at 1.3 s. Fizzle!
Apr 11 2007 04:49:16:967PM1070411025Joseph SnipesShot 26: Try again.
Apr 11 2007 04:59:18:190PM1070411026Joseph SnipesShot 26: Try again. Fizzle. Didn't wait long enough.
