SL: Schmidt MP: 473 Shot plan: 1) Try to duplicate results from shot 1060728011 (same current, same density, same LH parameters) 2) Try to duplicate results from shot 1060728014 (same current, same density, same LH parameters) purpose: lower the density to try to see hxr signal levels similar to last campaign 3) Start ne scan with long LH pulses, 60 deg phasing, ~500 kW. Scan peak densities 1e20, 1.25e20, 1.5e20 (if we have time, 1.75e20, 2e20, and 0.75e20) |

| This will be a half day run in the afternoon following Andrea. The plan is to investigate the effect of using NINJA to modify the edge density in front of the LH grill. We hope to find that puffing D2 gas from the A/B limiter will locally increase density in front of the top rows of the LH antenna (the two are magnetically connected), thus decreasing reflection coef for low density shots.
NINJA firing D2 gas at 1 second, LH at .7 seconds. Starting shot will be 1070330007. NINJA will start with 12psi. We will increase the pressure by 5psi per shot until we see a increase in density and/or decrease in reflection coef. (4 shots) At this point, move the plasma away from the outer wall by 10mm( 4 shots), then 20mm (4 shots) and repeat NINJA pressure scan. |

| Engineering setup for Wednesday 11 April 2007 MP 473: Lower Hybrid Checkout Session leaders: A. Schmidt and G. Wallace Physics operator: J. A. Snipes Overnight ECDC in Deuterium. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00. Power systems as on 1070330007 A-coil configuration: normal [+Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) pumpout and fill NINJA with 12 psi D2 Hybrid disabled Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Torvac setup: Gate valves open Key diagnostics: Hard x ray array ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: No ICRF -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LH Setup: LH required at moderate power ~ 1 MW ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Run plan: First load from shot 1070330007 except reduce Ip to 0.6 MW and go to as low a density as possible perhaps nl04 ~ 3 x 10^19 m^-2. We will be trying to reproduce shots 1060728011 and 014 at 0.6 MA and 1 MA at low density but we will use the setup from this year's shot to avoid DPCS problems. Then increase the density in steps up to perhaps nl04 ~ 8 x 10^19 m^-2 looking for changes in LH coupling and hard x ray profiles. For the later part of the run, we will sit at nl04 = 8 x 10^19 m^-2 and vary the NINJA gas puff to look for effects on LH coupling. |

| Summary:
We started the day trying to reproduce conditions from the 2006 campaign (so far this campaign, there has been little/no HXR signal during LH). We established high HXR signal, high ECE nonthermal signal, and significant loop voltage drops in shots 1-3 and 5 (shot 4 was at higher density and showed no fast electron evidence). At this point, we had seen clear evidence of fast electrons and current drive at nl04=4e19 and NO evidence of fast electrons at nl04=8e19. Moving in steps of 1e19, we raised the density from nl04=4e19 to nl04=7.5e19 during shots 8-10 to see where the density threshold was. Fast electrons were detectable at nl04=6e19, but not nl04=7.5e19. Thinking this might be an accessibility issue, we raised the field from 5.4 T to 7 T and lowered density back to 6e19. Then we slowly raised density in increments of 1e19, successfully up to nl04=1e20, where fast electron evidence disappeared (shots 12-16). Thinking that we were again hitting an accessibility limit, we changed from 60 degree phasing to 90 degree phasing and 120 degree phasing. We found evidence of fast electrons at nl04=1e20 for both of the higher phasings (shots 17-20). For shots 21+, we brought the density back down to nl04=8e19, brought the phasing back to 60 degrees, and raised the current from 800 kA to 1.2 MA (there is some evidence that higher total current is correlated with higher LHCD efficiency). This resulted in a number of LH trips, followed by disruptions and fizzles. It appears that the LH trips were due to extremely low density at the grill due to the increased current. We attempted to get the LH coupling back by puffing gas with the ninja system, with no success. The gas puffing brought up the core density as much as it brought up the edge density (we were hoping to bring up the edge density preferentially). |

| It was a good run with some interesting results on the Lower Hybrid operation for a number of plasma conditions. Density was scanned over a fairly broad range. The TF was varied from 4.3 T to 7 T and the plasma current was varied from 0.5 MA to 1.2 MA. The high field discharges were set to rampdown the TF at 1.2 s, but all of the shape parameters were not adjusted in time accordingly and this may have contributed to the disruptions in the rampdown for the high current discharges. This programming was corrected for the last two discharges 25 and 26 but they were both fizzles, so it was not possible to test them. I recommend to the next physop to start with shot 25 to run a 1.2 MA, 7T shot in the future and it should go. The startup was not varied hardly at all throughout the day and was quite reliable until we got disruptions. There were some runaways in the startup and they were eliminated by a PG3 gas tweak in the breakdown phase on shot 17. There were some TF fuses blown when we went to high TF, but they were quickly replaced. Otherwise, the machine ran very well today. Of 26 shots, there were 22 full length plasmas, 4 fizzles following disruptions, no duds, and no system faults. EF2U coil stress > 50% of allowable apparently because the Ip ramp rate is too large on the rampup. Otherwise, it is a good shot. |
| Apr 11 2007 04:04:58:980PM | 1070411022 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 22: Reduced Ip ramp up rate so that it is programmed to reach 0.9 MA at 0.4 s and 1.2 MA at 0.6 s. Started Ip rampdown at 1.2 s to match the TF rampdown. NINJA puff at 0.8 s. Fizzle! |
| Apr 11 2007 04:33:28:413PM | 1070411024 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 23: Try again. Disrupted in rampdown at 1.32 s at 1 MA. |

| Apr 11 2007 04:49:16:967PM | 1070411025 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Try again. |
| Apr 11 2007 04:59:18:190PM | 1070411026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Try again. Fizzle. Didn't wait long enough. |
