First shot sequence:
nl04=5e19 at 500 kA and 800 kA

Second shot sequence:
nl04=1e20 at 500 kA and 800 kA

Third shot sequence:
nl04=2e20 at 500 kA and 800 kA (1 MA if we have time)

If there is time left, try the medium-density (nl04=1e20) shots at half the LH power.

MP464 The purpose of this run will be to determine what conditions are necessary for sucessful coupling into ICRH plasmas with J and E antennae.

Plasma from 1070426017. LH launcher at 1.5mm behind limiter, and mechanical phase shifters 90deg co-current drive.

1) Start with J-port antenna power scan. Turn on J at 1MW at .7sec, then increase to 1.5MW at .9sec, then 2MW at 1.1sec.

LH on at .7sec. Start with 50kW per klystron for a 500ms pulse @ 60deg.

1b) Repeat same, but increase LH power by 50kW per klystron with each shot until we cannot increase power. (~5 shots total)

1c) If we cannot couple at low ICRF power, try inner wall diverted plasma to increase outer edge density.

2) Repeat 1 with E-port antenna.

This morning was a run in support of MP464 (LH Coupling Optimization) and MP473 (LH System Check-out). The purpose of the run was to determine the best conditions for joint operation of LH and the J-port ICRF antenna. After several disruptions early on, we got reliable plasma operation. Arcing occured early in each pulse in waveguides 9&10, probably in the jungle gym between the JG couplers and the intermediate couplers. The problem went away after a trip and retry in most shots.

The LH system then ran smooth after the first trip in most shots until the density dropped due to ICRF, which caused intrinsic reflections to rise, thus tripping out the CPS system. WG 8T in particular was causing difficulties---an attenuator was added after shot 13 to help things run more smoothly. Some conditioning of the klystrons was required after tripping out at 26kV on shots 9&10. The problem cropped up again later in the day around shot 20. During the "clean" parts of operation with ICRF we saw reflections ~20%, followed by a rise in reflection as the density dropped.

Higher density shots showed strong signs of PDI, ~20dB down from fundamental. Also observed symmetric sidebands at +/- 80MHz from the fundamental.

The purpose of this run was to perform fast square-wave modulation (12.5 ms on, 12.5 ms off) of LH at various plasma conditions to measure LH-drive fast electron diffusion. The LH system was having problems today and unfortunately, we were only able to obtain data at 2 plasma conditions: Ip=500 kA and Ip=800 kA for nl04=5e19, B=5.4 T, 90 deg ideal LH phasing, ~400+ kW LH power. The two successful shots were 16 (800 kA) and 17 (500 kA).

Run was divided between Greg Wallace (LH coupling into H-Mode) and Andrea Schmidt (LH fast electron confinement).

Machine ran well for Greg, however holding the density at the grill during ICRF, particularly H-Modes continues to be a problem. Typically LH runs well with good coupling until ICRF turns on. Density at the grill drops leading to loss of coupling and tripout of LH due to high reflection. It seems clear that gas puffing near the grill will be needed to solve this problem. It is particularly accute when H-Modes form.

Two good shots were obtained for Andrea using modulated LH power. On shot 18 we tried to form a 500 kA shot at nel04=1e20, however the shot disrupted. The same result occured on shot 20. Raising the current to 800 kA on shot 21 restored the shot but the LH transmitter faulted. This turned out to be due to tube A3V2 which could not hold 50 kV voltage. About 2 hours was spent trying to condition the tube
but without success. Finally we ran the last shot for pellet injection, but alas it fizzled.

Overall the machine and related systems ran well except for early shots where the plasma disrupted well into the shot. This seemed to be due to an interference with the ICRF at high power and the control system. The work around was to limit the ICRF power from J port to 2 MW and this got us through. But the problem still needs to be addressed

Scorecard: We ran a total of 22 shots with good startup on all but 2, one of which fizzled and the other had no commutation. There were 3 disruptions due to the RF interference problem and 2 more due to high density operation at low current.

ECDC overnight in D2, pressure=2e-4 Torr. Rmin/Rdwell/Rmax = 44/45/103 cm.
Bake at 60 C.

The run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00.

Power systems as on 1070426012.

A-coil configuration: normal [Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled.

Gas Setup:
fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA with 5 psi D2 DISABLED

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open during pulse.

Special diagnostics: Hard x-ray camera, DNB (MSE), core & edge TS (even if
uncalibrated)

Run plan:
