Hydrogen recovery using disruptions

The purpose of these experiments is to force hydrogen recovery from
the material surfaces in C-Mod by thermal desorption by intentionally
disrupting plasmas.

Special experimetnal requirements

- Gate valves close during shot and 3 minutes afterward
- We will possibly want to be able to vary the gate valve close time during the run
- Pre and post shot RGA-1 on the bypass valve is essential


Plan

The plan is to use the same shots (5.4 T, 1 MA) as being used
for the FFT tests, which after FFT works will include a Ip scan.
Fizzle strategy is uncertain. We'll evaluate whether or not the
fizzles are unecessarily delaying plasma ops during the run.
Unlike previous H/D recovery days we'll use ICRF to achieve
H-mod and higher W_th, and hopefully more robust H recovery.

Therefore we will use (obviously) the latter part of the shot. Nominally
we'll wait ~100 ms after the FFT ICRF (E?) to start the setup of our
target plasma for the VDE. The VDE timing needs to be set by
the physop to be consistent with the FFT timing.

(2 shots/disruptions per step)

1. Check back on standard downward Ohmiv 1 MA VDE and diagnose H/D recovery
Reference shot: 1070405018

2. Repeat with 0.5 MW ICRF (whatever sources ICRF recommend)

3. " " 1 MW

4. " " 1.5 MW

5. " " 2 MW

We would like to get these done at 1 MA, but will welcome higher Ip
to increase W_th.

Only 4 good plasmas, shot 5, 6, 8, and 10. (delay in FFT preparation, I2t board problem in the morning, and flux loop F10 problem after shot 10)

The FFT system has been tested to L-mode at 200 kW Pforw level. After some adjustments and bug fixing, it worked well in shot 10.

The system got a near perfect match (<3% power reflection) 2.5 ms after the
RF power was above the pre-set threshold (50 kW). And stayed matched
the whole time with RF power on.

We did't have enough plasma to test the L-H transition, density scan,
and current scan etc. However, based on the information we have, the FFT
matching should be better in H-mode.

We didn't have chance to test the power handling capability either. At 200 kW
forward power, the FFT was good at handling about 400 kW circulating power.

Four total VDE at 1 MA.
Two went down, which released very little gas (~1-2 Torr-L net
release when taking into account fuelled D2)
indicating this region had been "conditioned" already

Two VDE's went up, which releases much more gas ~80 Torr-L
with a substantial (~40%) fraction of Hydrogen.

The last VDE (#010) seems to have caused a short in
F10. The VDE charactertics (halo current, Wth at disruption)
were not outside the norm for "regular" C-Mod VDE, so not sure what
happened.

It was a very difficult run. The run was delayed initially for the ICRF guys to fix the fast ferrite tuner.
Then, we had a series of I^2t faults due to a faulty EF1 shunt. By shot 5, we got plasma and the programmed
disruption for Dennis Whyte. Then, we got a second disruption that was then followed by alternating fizzles
and disruptions for a total of four plasmas each with programmed vertical disruptions. After shot 10, flux
loop F10 had a 0.7 V offset and Granetz went into the cell to put a charged capacitor across the leads of the
flux loop to attempt to clear the intermittent fault in the flux loop. We then did a series of EF3 only test
shots under PLC control to check out the flux loop. All tests indicated that the flux loop measured far less
flux than its comparable loop. So, the flux loop appears to be shorted in two places around the vessel so that
it is not measuring the correct amount of flux. This flux loop is important for machine operation. So, the
run has been cancelled. Perhaps, something can be done to either repair the loop or reprogram the software
to no longer use F10.

amount of SF6. This leak has causes some trouble on TCI laser.
We will have to vent the section and refill with N2 only, and not to run E port
exceeding 1 MW.

The FFT computer should not do anything. I should get data from
on the Pforw, Prefl, etc.
Got power.

test shot 3508: Lower FFT threshold to 0.15 kW, so that it will fire.
No current.

Debugg...two enabling wires were not connected. Should have fixed.

test shot 3509: repeat.
there was current. and one module was faulted out.

Put back source ready and connect E port to normal operation.

Set FFT power threshold to 10 kW.

The FFT computer was timed out (no data, not triggered). I believe this
is normal behavior
because the real-time routine started in 'check' and was waiting for a pulse.
The pulse did not come after the normal time delay (~40 seconds), so it
was timed out.

A long delay due to network problems.

Suspected something wrong in I/V measurement.

Cell entry. Found the FFT current and voltage signals are swapped.
The real current was small though.

The connections were corrected.

Good news is that the Antenna ran. The match was close without FFT working properly.

gas recoveries we've seen in this conditioning period, suggesting
we've cleaned out the lower divertor + shelf.

It indeed worked.
I changed l_stub1_init to 1.55 m (from 1.60m) and l_stub2_init to 1.10 m (from 1.04 m) for next shot.

There is noise on FFTDC2 higher than 10 kW (the threshold) when D port was on.

Tighten DC1 power reflection threshold from 1% to 0.25%.
Raise the power threshod to 50 kW to avoid running from D noise.
