MP 488: Evaluation of Fast Ferrite Tuning (1/2 day) MP 468: Fast electron diffusion (1/2 day) Session leaders: Y. Lin (MP 488) A. Schmidt (MP 468) Physics operator: E. Marmar (with help from Steve Wolfe) ECDC overnight in D2, pressure=2e-4 Torr. Rmin/Rdwell/Rmax = 44/45/103 cm. Bake at 60 C. Due to the problem that occurred with flux loop F10 during Tuesday's run, plasma control programming has had to be changed. The current plan is to start testing this with plasma attempts (See Wolfe's logbook entries from 1070502 under MHD for details.) Power systems as on 1070426013. A-coil configuration: normal [Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot] and enabled. Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave NINJA as is DISABLED Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters Torvac setup: Gate valves open during pulse. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LH Setup: ready to operate by 1:00 pm at the latest, but can piggyback in the earlier part of the run if desired, to be coordinated with Yijun with regard to timing during the discharges. ICRF Setup: ready to operate D, E and J for first plasma at 9:00 am Run Plan: Assuming all goes well getting and controlling plasmas in the absence of the F10 flux loop, start with FFT tests on E-port, using J and/or D to get H-Modes. It is likely that at least the first hour or so of the run will be consumed trying to get breakdown and current rise. At some point, if sufficient progress has been made, we will switch over to MP 468. We plan to start the run at 9:00 am and finish at 5:00 pm. |

| The FFT system has successfully run in the following conditions
1. L-H-L transitions. 2. nl04 from 0.4 to 1.0e20 m^-2, and Ip from .5 to .8 MA 3. Forward power at <500 kW (circulating power < 1.7 MW). The arc detected on FFT2 promptly shut off the transmitter power. The protection system worked well. Future work: 1. Fill in SF6 instead of N2. This should raise the power handling. 2. Install notch filters on the fft direction coupler signals to decouple noise pickup from D port. (Additional note on 1070504: Possible water leak into the tank(s) caused by pumping out the gas in the line when fixing the leak on the elbow. The chilling water pump was running at 45 psi. With the gas pressure gone, the water pressure differential was 60 psi. We have to take out the tanks and open them to fix the problem). |

Second 1/2 day run summary: We square-wave modulated the LH power, 12.5 ms on, 12.5 ms off, for a variety of conditions. We scanned density from nl04=5e19 to 1e20 with Ip=800 kA. We also got data for nl04=1e20 and nl04=7.5e20 at Ip=500 kA. At the end of the day, we switched to 60 degree approximate phasing and repeated a single shot (800 kA, nl04=5e19) several times in order to boxcar bin average over several shots of data. From piggybacking off of the morning's run, we also had several shots with Ip=800, nl04=7.5e19, 90 degree ideal phasing. During the last few runs, the pellet injector was allowed to fire. |

Not unexpectedly, we got fizzles on the first 2 shots, and then had 2 full length plasmas in a row after fiddling slightly with gas, BR0 offset and RCUR offset. Then we got 14 fizzles in a row, changing fill and fields. Finally, reducing the BR0 offset to -.002 from -.001 for shot 19, gave us plasma. After 1 more fizzle on shot 24, we settled with BR0 offset of -.003 and all subsequent shots went to full current. Both MPs got useful shots. Scorecard: Plasmas 20 Fizzles 17 ______________ Total cycles 37 |

| May 3 2007 09:43:30:127AM | Yijun Lin | Work done yesterday on FFT preparation:
1. Adjusted l_stub1_init, and l_stub2_init. (to get better match) 2. Raised PID feedback gain. (to get faster feedback) 3. Adjusted the current overload threshold and tested. (not to be overloaded in normal operation) 4. Adjusted the scale factor of the current measurement.(so the feedback loop is consistent). 5. Included a dc offset in the digitizer on the current measurement. | |

| May 3 2007 01:17:04:817PM | 1070503019 | Yijun Lin | FFT successfully matched through L-H transition. Power reflection was kept below 10% at the transition, and below 1% other times
There was an arc detected by FFT2 at 0.85 sec. This arc shut off the transmitters. Note: circulated power went up significantly in H-mode. FMIT #4 got xbar fired after the pulse. Next: Add 0.005 m fudge on L_DC1_STUB1 and L_STUB2_DC2 length, and see whether this can move the matched point closer to zero reflection. |
| May 3 2007 01:28:13:637PM | 1070503020 | Yijun Lin | FFT got zero reflection before L-mode.
However, it oscillating in H-mode. (The oscillation may be caused by interference from D port. We need a notch filter on the FFT directional couplers to avoid it. ) There was an arc detected by FFT2 at 0.92 sec. This arc shut off the transmitters. It seems that the N2 cannot sustain this much power. (We will have to fill SF6 in the future) Next: 1. Reduce the feedback gain back to previous level. gain_st to -0.1, gain_cur to -0.25. 2. Also loose the threshold of good match (from 0.25% to 1%) repeat. 3. No D port for a shot. |
| May 3 2007 01:38:01:187PM | 1070503021 | Yijun Lin | FFT worked very well.
No arc this time (circulating power is lower). Plasma in and out of H-mode, but the power reflection stayed within 5%. Next: raise power to 400 kW. (Raise the feedback gains to gain_st to -0.2 and gain_cur -0.5. We don't run D together with E. There should not be oscillation). |
| May 3 2007 01:53:32:380PM | 1070503022 | Yijun Lin | Arc on FFT #2 at 1.08 sec.
Power reflection was mostly kept below 5%. Raising the feedback gain did not do much. The speed of the control is mostly determined by the power supply capability (rate of current change). Next: Ramping E power from .2 to .6 MW. Making notch filters to filter out D port 80.5 MHz power, so that we can run together with D port. |
| May 3 2007 02:08:22:447PM | 1070503023 | Yijun Lin | Request
E port ramping up from .2 to .6 MW, 0.95 to 1.2 sec. J port starts from 1.0 sec at 2.3 MW demand. result: Arc detected on FFT2 at 1.12 sec at 500 kW Pforw. [Circulation power sqrt(dc2forw^2 + dc2refl^2) ~ 1.7 MW] Power reflection was mostly kept below 5%. (a false start cause from J port noise at 1.4 sec) The power handling is getting better shot by shot. Next: Raise power and see if it is getting better. |

| May 3 2007 02:27:56:267PM | 1070503025 | Yijun Lin | Request
E port ramping up from .4 to .8 MW, 0.95 to 1.2 sec. J port starts from 1.0 sec at 2.3 MW demand. result: Arc detected on FFT2 at 1.03 sec at 500 kW Pforw. [Circulation power sqrt(dc2forw^2 + dc2refl^2) ~ 1.6 MW] Power reflection was mostly kept below 5%. The power handling is the slightly worse than shot 23. I think we cannot go higher power with N2 in. Hopefully, SF6 will help in the future. next: Just run it at lower power and see how it performs at different plasma parameters. |
| May 3 2007 02:45:12:790PM | 1070503026 | Yijun Lin | Request
E port ramping up from .4 to .8 MW, 1.3 to 1.5 sec. J from 1 sec, D from 1.4 sec. result: E ran. (D and J max faults because density changed from nl 04 from .8 to 1.0). Both FFT power currents to max. The load is outside the design region, but the match is mostly below 10%. The FFT was all right dealing with dc1 arcs (rf retry, not matching to arcs, etc) Next: repeat. |
| May 3 2007 03:06:47:720PM | 1070503027 | Yijun Lin | Request: nl 0.75
E port ramping up from .4 to .8 MW, 1.3 to 1.5 sec. J port starts from 1.0 sec at 2.3 MW demand. result: E ran. arc detected on FFT2 at 1.36 sec (500 kW in H-mode). Got a mismatch in the start. The power threshold (50 kW) to start FFT is too high. I would try 10 kW for next shot. (The FFTs would run with noises from D/J, but this seems to not a concern). Next: repeat. |

E port ramping up from .4 to .8 MW, 1.3 to 1.5 sec. result: E ran. arc detected on FFT2 at 1.36 sec (500 kW in H-mode). (same as last shot). Start-up all-right after lowering the power threshold to 10 kW. Next: Lower E port demand to 0.3 MW flat. There is no point to run it with arc all the time. |

E port 0.3 MW, 1.3 to 1.5 sec D and J run at 3 MW total. result: E ran. Noise from D port made the feedback crazy. Next: no D port until the notch filters are installed. |

| May 2 2007 06:44:58:410PM | Steve Wolfe | The following measures have been taken to deal with the loss of flux loop F10 and the continuing loss of flux loop F11 in preparation for operation on Thursday, 1070503: 1) The F10 input has been turned off in the \hybrid::top.config.inputs and \hybrid::top.dpcs_config.inputs branches, and the \hybrid::top.config:config_id has been updated to warn Physics Operators to recalculate all magnetics predictors. 2) The fluxihh predictors have been modified to ignore the F10 and F11 loops. Changes were made to the routines fluxihh.pro and ianup.pro, and a new ian tree pulse file (ian_005.*) was created; the tree was generated using /home/wolfe/idl/ian/filaments/wtdfil_new.pro 3) The coefficients in the \analysis::top:fluxihh branch have been updated to match the behavior of the fluxihh predictors, using /usr/local/cmod/codes/mhd/fluxihh/load_predictors_procedure.sh 4) The vacuum predictors (Br_0) was updated by creating a new mhd_static_2012 pulse file and changing \analysis::top:recon_vac:static_shot to point to 2012. The static tree was populated using /home/wolfe/idl/RECON_VAC/fix_recon_vac.pro with a tolerance =0.01 and specifying F10,F11,F17,F18A as bad. This change also updates the RECON_VAC signals. 5) The filament predictors (ZCUR) are updated automatically by calling them with the hybrid f10 input turned off. No additional action was required. 6) The weights on Flux_09 (F10) in \analysis::efit_efitin:fwtsi and \efit::efit_efitin:fwtsi model files were modified to return 0. on shots after 1070501010. 7) An expression synthesizing a bogus signal based on full flux loops f09, f19 and f18a, under the assumption of up-down symmetry, was substituted into \mag_fluxes:flux_09 in the magnetics model tree. This will be picked up by MFLUX and the VacBrBz nodes. 8) Ian has imported the new versions of ianup.pro and the ian_005 pulse files into his directory, which will probably cause MFIL to use these values for future shots. | |
