| Session Leader run plan for 1070504 (second half):
MP 296: "Confirmation of Thomson scattering density calibration using electron cyclotron emission cutoffs" (a.k.a. "TS/ECE cross-calibration") PURPOSE: These shots will operate at low(ish) field and high densities in order to generate ECE cutoffs throughout the plasma. These give a fairly unambiguous density measurment, allowing the calibration of simultaneously measured Thomson scattering densities. PREPARATION: No special machine conditioning required. No RF required. Setup GPC grating for 4T. Adjust angle on GPC2 for low-field as well. RUN PLAN: -Begin with shot 1070503028. Keep Ip=800kA. Lower Bt to 4.0T. -Target nl04 be 1.2x10^20m^-2 at 0.6s, then stepped to 2.0x10^20m^-2. This should get central n_e sufficiently high to promote ECE cutoffs, but still allow operation below n_G. -Repeat shot, incrementing and decrementing Bt in steps of 0.1T as desired, in order to vary the radii of the measured cutoffs. -If we get a discharge that is steady and fully cut off on the LFS before the end of flattop, we might insert a Bt waggle up to 4.5 or 5.0T and back down, to obtain additional data points. -If Ohmic H-modes are prevalent, switch to inner wall limited or USN to raise the L-H power threshold. |

| The first half of this day was MP#429, SOL
Turbulence Experiment, but with a B field scan at constant q(a). We started by repeating the inner-wall limited, near-circular plasma of 1060412026, which was optimized for a comparison with Bruce Scott's GEMR code. This was at B=5.4 T, I=0.8 MA, with a large outer gap to see the SOL turbulence better, and a relatively low density. All shots had midplane GPI puff and fast diode data. Shots 1-2 of today were to re-establish the condition of 1060412026 and get probe data and GPI data. These were successful. Shot 1 had X-point GPI puff but no probes. Shot 2 had X-point GPI puff and probes. Shots 3-4 of today were to repeat this shot but at a higher density, to do a collisionality scan. These were successful. Shot 3 and 4 both had X-point GPI and probes. Shots 5-6 were at a higher field of B=6.75 T with I=1.0 MA and a relatively low density. These were successful. Shot 5 had X-point GPI puff and no probes. Shot 6 had X-point GPI puff and probes. Shot 7 disrupted early. Shot 8 was a 6.75 T shot like 5-6 but with a smaller Ninja puff to make a smaller change of density during this puff. This was successful. Shot 8 had probes and no X-point GPI puff. Shot 9 was an attempt to do B=2.75 T, I=0.4 MA, but had an early disruption. Shot 10 was at 2.75 T, 0.4 MA and relatively low density. This was successful, although there was an unexplained event at 1.4 sec which took a notch out of the current (most likely a ufo). Shot 10 had no probes and no X-point GPI puff. Shot 11 was like shot 10at 2.75 T, successful except for a ufo at 0.9 sec, just after a probe plunge. Shot 11 had probes but no X-point GPI puff. Shot 12 was an attempt to do 2.75 T again but had an early disruption. |

| We got three shots with density ramps at 4.1, 4.0, and 3.9T. We obtained suitable
ECE cutoff data in both GPC and GPC2, and were able to calculate updated calibration coefficients for the core Thomson scattering. They look fairly reasonable for the core polychromators, and less so for the older spectrometers. These core TS calibrations will be in the model tree as of tonight. |

| We had trouble today with blown fuses in the OH1 supply that cost a couple of hours of run time, followed by broken limit switch on a Ross relay that is part of the OH1 resistance measurement that cost another 90 minutes or so. Since we could not tell if the relay was open or closed to the OH bus, we had to fix it before we could operate the machine.
The machine startup was robust when we had all the hardware functioning. We had only one fizzle following a disruption on shot 14. We had another distruption on shot 16, but there was a long delay following this discharge to fix the Ross relay problem. Note that there is a 3 kA offset in the DPCS setting for the TF: If you want 111 kA you need to program 108 kA. So on shot 14 I got 4.1 instead of 4.0 T. Score ----- plasmas 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 11,12,14,16,19 fizzle 15,18 test 13,17 |
