Evaluate localized boronization

Yesterday evening we performed a boronization with
8% B_vertical/B. The boron deposition was monitored
using the S3 QMBs. The control room conclusion (at 11 pm)
was that the boron film deposition was being dominated by
ionic deposition, and that little deposition was
occuring at R>R_limiter ~ 90 cm. We estimated
a boron film deposition rate ~ 20 nm/hour near the UH
resonance. Since we performed the S3 test with the
EC reonance fixed at 60 cm, the peak deposition was about
10 cm outboard of this at 70 cm. The expectation is that
the boron film thickness is maximum on the outer divertor
areas with total thickness ~ 100-200 nm.

No ECDC cleaning

Today we'll evaluate the boronization effectiveness
by running fiducial 1.05 MA, 5.3 T with ICRH

Physop Run Plan:

Start from the Segment 2 setup from 1050426022 (1MA, 5.4T, LSN, MP#417
fiducial) , with all magnetics predictors recalculated and modified for 
Acoil feedback (B21_PROJ). Use startup from 1070504019 or similar.

The first challenge is to get plasma post-boronization with no ecdc. Probably
need to play with the gas some to get this reliable.  If this is not
successful, may need to do some ECDC during the day; consult with Jim and/or
Earl whether this would be better in He or D2.

ICRF should try to run from the beginning of the day on as many antennas as
available. One of the goals is to determine how much if any "reconditioning"
is required to get back to high power. 

The second major goal is to evaluate H-mode character, hoping for good EDA
conditions. Radiated power, and specifically Mo and Fe spectroscopic
signatures, should be monitored throughout. One possible complication is lack
of density control, e.g. uncontrolled gas releases; if this occurs we should
try to condition it away with repeated tokamak discharges, but if the problem
is persistent then He ECDC should be considered. 

Assuming we are having success (EDA, low Prad, Prf>3MW), continue constant
shots, or increasing power, to evaluate the longevity of the boronization. If
P. Phillips wants to piggyback his MP#476 and there are sufficient QCM
diagnostics online, then consider increaseing Bt to 5.6T and decreasing the
outer gap. 

If the ICRF requires extensive conditioning, try upper null discharges to
avoid needless erosion of whatever boron layer is there. Alternatively,
consider a high-triangularity shape like 1060719011, as suggested in
MP#484. Once decent power is regained, proceed as above to evaluate H-mode,
Prad, metal spectroscopy. 

If the boronization appears to have been ineffective (high radiation, Mo) but
the ICRF is running well, not sure what we should do. Maybe convert to a
combination of MP#355 (ICRF conditioning) and MP#488 (FFT).

Start with PCS loaded from 1070510007. This shot is selected because it is the first
shot from 1070510 with removal of seg2 Pg3 puff at 0.7sec. The puff resulted in
high neutral pressure which was the cause of difficulties with J-port ICRF operation.)

The day started in a promising manner. Shot 1 started
up without problems, we got ~1.5 MW of RF power from
E-ant and D-ant, and the H-mode was a nice EDA. The
Mo level was down factors of 10, and the Chromex showed no signs
of Mo I coming from divertor surfaces or the inner wall.
The TS calibration and unshuttered lenses were not affected by the boronization.
This and the shot 1 success for two of the ICRH antennaes indicates
that we avoided unwanted film deposition at large R.

The next few shot also looked good, and RF power began to increase.
We obtained 160 kJ on one of the shots. J-ant had problems early on
and through most of the day. Cause is unclear, although high
density / neutral pressure target plasmas may have played a role in early
shots.

However it became clear that by about shot 5 or 6 that the radiation was starting
to increase linearly throughout H-mode and we could not get
EDA. Mo radiation correspondingly started to increase. That was the
end of high-performance shots for the day.

It seems clear that the total B thickness was not sufficient from the BZN yesterday.
We measured ~100 nm, but because of the BZN schedule we only got
film over a small portion of the wall, namely at the outer divertor shelf
near R=70 cm. The Chromex showed no strong Mo from the inner wall or
divertor through the day. It seems we missed the important location for
boronization layers. The high-delta shots of later in the day
point to this fact, since we saw no Mo I on the upper part of the
vertical target which connected to just in front of the outer midplane limiters.

So a partial success: the localization works, but we need to
1. Increase total effectivness of a single BZN by increasing duration, and or
2. Sweep out to larger major radii.

The run got off to a good start with a long EDA hmode on shot#1,
but things went downhill from there, as far as the boronization 
was concerned. The moly started coming up after only a few shots,
and we never did get a clean pulse from J. Even the first shot had
significant radiated power fraction. The boronization last night,
which had been concentrated almost entirely at a single location,
with pressure around 1/4 of the normal, was clearly not satisfactory
for a production run. However, it is quite possible that using the
vertical field technique in combination with a sweep (which was only 
done for about 45 minutes), probably going a little further out than 
the 65cm maximum done last night, would be a good prescription. It seems
reasonable to think that the scan should go at least as far out as the
"sweet spot" previously identified, namely 70cm for the EC resonance,
which would have corresponded to a much larger radius for the actual
deposition maximum which does seem to follow the upper hybrid. It may
be that the original interpretation of those experiments needs to be 
revised. It is also possible we are seeing a new source region, perhaps
associated with the new tiles in the upper cryopump region. 

On the positive side, we had very little negative impact of the
boronization on operation, aside from some moderate marfing on the
first few shots. Startup was pretty reliable, although we did have 
some fizzles late in the day which cannot be reasonably blamed on the
boronization. Also, there seemed to be no conditioning issues with 
D or E. I'm not convinced that the J-port faulting was related to 
the boronization at all, although it had been running ok last week. 
In retrospect, maybe we should have brought back a shot from last 
Thursday morning just to see if J would have stayed on; maybe it
was the change in target plasma (match, gas, gremlins?) that caused 
the faulting. There also seems to be no basis for the post-boronization
ecdc regimen, either helium or deuterium, based on plasma startup and 
evolution today with no ecdc at all. 

We did move away from the fiducial programming after shot 5, 
lowering the density and making the outer gap smaller. This did
not seem to help much in terms of J staying on, and the moly continued
to get worse. Density was put back up for shot 17. Argon was enabled
at shot#13; of course it's only a coincidence that after this we 
started getting fizzles. Also on shot#13 we had problems on the TCI and
the ECE acted like its gate valve had closed during the shot, then reopened;
very weird.

On shot#24 we changed to the JFT2-M shape to put the strike and the
near antenna flux lines down into the slot, as proposed in Blip's
MP#484. The active segment from 1060719011 was imported into segment 3. 
This ran ok, but did not give any evidence of reduced moly or of better
Jport behavior. It did look like we were getting ELMs again, so that
aspect of the magic shape is still there. 

We only had one disruption today, on #27 (JFT2-M shape) at 1.5sec.
No obvious deleterious effects. 

Matt pointed out that we were still getting Fe influx, especially bursts,
but wasn't sure if there was any reduction relative to pre-boronization. 
This was one of the questions regarding the minimal scanning done last
night, which never approached the outer wall where the stainless lives. 
Perhaps it means we really do need to go out there at least once, but it
wasn't immediately clear that iron was a significant problem, just that
it was visible. 

Niobium was finally spotted, but not in obvious correlation to the J-port
pulses as was expected. The saga continues. 

The machine ran well all day, with only a couple glitches. For the first
several shots we had unexplained PF breaker trips long (tens of seconds to 
minutes) after the shot. The fault chain traced to a loss of phase on
EF1 supply, which makes no sense at that time. We lost about an hour total
while Bill Cochran tried to track this down between shots. Finally he 
replaced some chips and reseated a board and the problem vanished. There
was also one mystery no TF shot (#24). The event server died once. Otherwise
the run went smoothly.

Notice that nl04 target is set for 1.05e20, which seems a little high,
 but this was the fiducial.
Also, note that the current is really set to 1.05MA rather than 1.0. 
I should check if this was really the fiducial? 
Note seg1 pg4 puff is 19msec, seems like an ok place to start, if
it fizzles probably want to drop it.

but this time E isn't happy either. J looks like a comb, 
D takes a couple tries, then faults out. 

This had another slow current rise, almost didn't go. 
After that disruption, I expect I need to drop gas.
