MP # 482 Pedestal CXRS Diagnostic Development Purpose: The purpose of this mini-proposal is to develop better methods of background subtraction in order to improve our capability of making reliable temperature, density, and velocity meansurements via charge exchange recombination spectroscopy. Preparation: Recently boronized machine enough RF power to produce sustainable H-mode 2-3MW 80MHz 0.5-1s pulses beginning at .75-1s Diagnostics: All CX diagnostics, Edge and Core TS, ECE, edge probes for early L-mode periods only, bolometry, Hirex and its various relations. Enable the following gate valves and shutters: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters; DNB gatevalve Allow low level Argon puff(1 psi 100ms) early in shot (0.3s) from shot 1 No Lower Hybrid No pellet injection (sorry Brock) T=5.4T (forward field) I=800ka-1Ma Working Gas D2 Density: nl_04 = 0.8-1.2 *10^20 m^-2 LSN plasmas, use 1050823002 as reference equilibria Shot Sequence: 1) No DNB, nl04=0.8x1020 m-2, RF power ramp 1-3MW to find power threshold 2) No DNB, nl04=0.8x1020 m-2 with power at least 1MW above the threshold. Long pulse DNB, 6-6.5A, extending 100ms before and after the RF pulse nl04=0.8x1020 m-2 (See Figure 2) 3) Chopped DNB 20ms on and off, nl04=0.8x1020 m-2 (See Figure 4.) Phase Shifted chopped DNB 12ms on and off, nl04=0.8x1020 m-2 4) Third shot time allowing with chopped DNB timing to be decided possibly shifted to capture more of the LH transition 5-8) Repeat above procedure for nl_04-1.2*10^20 m^-2 Gap Scans: 9-10) No DNB, RF power at least 1MW above threshold power, Nl04=1.2*1020 m-2 Gap scan 1.5cm -0.5cm during H-mode, 2 shots |

| A successful day. We completed the MP for
CXRS background subtraction calibrations. The boronization seems to have held since we were able to get steady H-modes through most of the day, with the exception of the USN H-modes at the end of the day. |

| I loaded the startup from 1070511036 and all was well until shot 14. We again began the afternoon fizzle sequence of a fizzle or two followed by a plasma. Before shot 24 we did 10 minutes of ECDC in helium at 5e-5 Torr. This process seemed to fix the problem and we then had 5 plasmas in a row. We have had good results using ECDC in D2 previously to end the fizzle cycle, but helium has the advantage of being pumped out quickly. The last shot was lost to a data system problem.

| May 16 2007 09:56:22:010AM | 1070516001 | Dennis Whyte | No H-mode. RF (J-ant) had many trips.
Strange density pump out at onset of RF. Huge Fe injection at 0.3 s. Inner gap is 1 cm as compared to 1.5 in fiducial shot 1050823002. |
| May 16 2007 10:24:25:240AM | 1070516002 | Dennis Whyte | H-mode,at PRF ~ 1.5 MW.
but RF started to trip out just after the transition. As a result the H-mode was not very constant. Mo and Prad jump around a bit with the RF but overall look steady. Have decided we'll get likely get reliable and repeatable H-mode with P_Rf = 2 MW steady. Hopefully the lower power input will also lengthen the utility of the BZN. Chromex has views of top of outer divertor shelf. Will monitor for Mo I. No Mo I present at this point. |
| May 16 2007 10:19:45:223AM | 1070516003 | Dennis Whyte | 2 MW RF starting at 0.75 seconds.
L-H transition looks good, with steady H-mode by ~ 1 s. Looks like a good fiducial with steady L-H transition and H-mode density steady after ~250 ms. This will be adequate for the CXRS background studies. What looks liks an antennae injection of Ni/Mo simultnaeously with the RF drop out and back transition at 1.15 s. Mcpherson shows steady Cu light during H-mode/RF phases. |
| May 16 2007 10:54:28:563AM | 1070516004 | Dennis Whyte | Constant RF at 2 MW from 0.75 to 1.5 s
Good L-H transitions and steady H-mode with constant Prad. but a small impurity injection 1.09 s kicked down stored energy. The DNB was on at 5 A from 0.5 to 1.75, but the intensity increment was very weak on CXRS. This turns out to be consistent with post-BZN results from last weak. So it appears there is not enough signal strength to utilize the constant beam on constant for analysis and we're switching to the beam blips. |
| May 16 2007 11:07:03:320AM | 1070516005 | Dennis Whyte | constant H-mode at 2 MW Rf, with a few
Rf drop outs. Reproducible L-H transition. McPherson continues to show low Mo in H-mode, but small injectionsin early phases of discharge. DNB had 20 ms beam blips. CXRS shows good signal. Will now phase DNB blips |
| May 16 2007 11:21:43:700AM | 1070516006 | Dennis Whyte | constant H-mode at 2 MW Rf,
Reproducible L-H transition compares to prevsious shots based on density evolution. Prad has creeped up and core Mo too. No signs of Mo I on Chromex (inner wall, vertical target or upper shelf) 13 ms DNB blips. Good CXRS signals. |
| May 16 2007 11:44:12:863AM | 1070516008 | Dennis Whyte | nl_04 at1.2e20
RF never really took hold due to matching problems. Fewer injections with this long L-Mode. |
| May 16 2007 11:56:53:493AM | 1070516009 | Dennis Whyte | nl_04 at1.2e20
RF still has matching problems. RF gurus inform us that the edge pressure is a bit too high. We're going to lower nl04 to 1.1e20 to get more reliable RF. |
| May 16 2007 12:23:06:850PM | 1070516011 | Dennis Whyte | nl_04 = 1.0e20
H-mode at 1 MW RF Steady H-mode at ~1.5 MW RF J-ant had matching problems so this looks like a good fiducial at higher density. Will program steady 1.5 MW RF for production shots. |
| May 16 2007 12:49:40:530PM | 1070516012 | Dennis Whyte | H-mode, with 1.4 MW RF
Target nl = 1.0e20 Looks like good higher density fiducial There are signs that the Prad is becoming less stable in H-mode. No sign of Mo I on Chromex |
| May 16 2007 12:52:52:750PM | 1070516013 | Dennis Whyte | H-mode, with 1.4 MW RF
Target nl = 1.0e20 Had a few drop outs but steady Prad. Good DNB beam blips and CXRS data. |
| May 16 2007 01:41:14:940PM | 1070516015 | Dennis Whyte | Good repeat H-mode at 1.5 MW. |

|
| May 16 2007 03:11:03:013PM | 1070516021 | Dennis Whyte | the first applicaiton of 2 MW RF did not
result in H-mode. It's not clear why since the target looks identical to 18 which went into H-mode the H-mode was delayed until 0.9 s but CXRS got some right gap sweep data |
| May 16 2007 03:11:11:513PM | 1070516022 | Dennis Whyte | fizzle
|
| May 16 2007 04:34:38:437PM | 1070516026 | Dennis Whyte | Transiet H-mode in USN at 2.5 MW RF at 1.1 s.
Radiated / Mo power is rising rapidly...what does this tell us about the importance of divertor Mo sources? |
| May 16 2007 04:39:58:377PM | 1070516027 | Dennis Whyte | Two transient H-modes in USN at 2.5 MW RF
No signs of Mo I on Chromex |
