| Run Plan for 1070518 MP#479 ""Effect of magnetic shear on edge gradients"" Goal These experiments will investigate the role that magnetic shear may play in setting the observed pressure gradients near the last-closed flux surface (LCFS) in ohmic-heated L-mode discharges. Approach Vary the magnetic shear at the LCFS by fixing the magnetic topology but varying the flux surface that defines the LCFS. This is done by first dialing up a double-null plasma and then systematically reducing the inner wall gap such that the discharge goes from diverted to inner-wall limited. Plan Load from shot#1070511029. This shot ran on segment#4. It was a near-DN discharge with SSEP control: Ip=0.8 MA, Bt= 5.4 tesla, NL04 = 1.1e20. Reprogram NL04=0.8e20 and set SSEP to 0.0 ASP, FSP, WASP (for diverted plasmas only) programmed to scan at 0.7, 0.9, 1.1 seconds GPI viewing lower x-point region. Edge Thomson scattering with optimized SOL channels. Shots Reload #1070511029, turn on segment#4, set SSEP=0.0, NL04=0.8e20 Shots 1-4: Adjust inner gap to 12 mm, outer gap to 15 mm. Optimize scanning probe targets. Use WASP probe to see if DN balance is attained. Shots 5-12: NL04 ~ 0.8e20 m-2, scan inner gap: 5, 2, 0, -2, -5, -10 mm Keep outer gap the same. Shots 13-20: set NL04 ~ 0.4e20 m-2, can inner gap: 5, 2, 0, -2, -5, -10 mm Keep outer gap the same. Shots 21-28: set NL04 ~ 1.2e20 m-2, scan inner gap: 5, 2, 0, -2, -5, -10 mm Keep outer gap the same. |

| Run Summary for 1070518 MP#479 ""Effect of magnetic shear on edge gradients"" This was a very productive run. We ran double-null plasmas all day with varying 'clearin' distances, causing the discharges to be either diverted with a finite inner wall gap or to be limited onto the inner wall. In limited discharges, the spacing between the last-closed flux surface and the separatrix was varied systematically to a maximum of about 12 mm. We got about 12 shots with a fine clearin scan (~2mm steps) at a nominal density of NL04~0.85 and with the ASP and FSP probe systems plunging sufficiently deep. The WASP probe was also used to investigate high-field side profiles in regular double-null plasmas as well as some inner-wall limited plasmas. (Yes we found that the WASP probe can be used in inner-limited plasmas. We just don't scan it very far!) The new tungsten electrode geometry, which is now on all the scanning probes, worked extremely well, surviving some over-insertion errors (Te = 100 eV!) without showing any damage. After shot#18, we tried to lower the density to begin the low-density (NL04~0.4) clearin scan part of the MP. However, these innner-wall limited discharges initially refused to run with densities below about NL04 ~ 0.6, a phenomenon that we saw earlier during Stewart Zweben's run (MP#428). After a delay from an OH2U supply problem (shot#22), we did manage to do a coarse clearin scan at NL04 ~ 0.5. We did not have time to start a high density scan (the MP called for NL04 ~ 1.2). Before the run, Jerry optimized the placement of the edge Thomson views. He reported that the ETS system worked well today. His initial analysis of the Thomson data showed that the steep gradient region essentially followed the location of the LCFS, ignoring the location of the separatrix. Scanning probe data seems to support this initial conclusion. There may be some differences in the electron pressure gradient at the LCFS, depending on whether it is limited or diverted. The Thomson data does not have the spatial resolution to explore this detail. Therefore, we will need to populate the edge database with probe-profile data to take a close look at this question. We can't do this immediately because the software needs to be rewritten to handle the new probe geometries (perpendicular Mach probe) that we are now using. Stay tuned. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Quick shot log 1- DN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.82-0.7, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+5), FSP(+0) 2- DN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.8-0.75, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+14), FSP(+6) 3- fizzle 4- early disruption 5- fizzle 6- DN, gap=11mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+16)-excellent, FSP(+7)-excellent 7- DN, gap=6mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.85-0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+16)-could be deeper, FSP(+7)-excellent 8- DN, gap=3mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.86-0.82, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+18)-excellent, FSP(+7)-excellent 9- DN, gap=0mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.9, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+18)-excellent, FSP(+7)-could be deeper 10- DN, clearin=-11mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.85, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+18)-excellent, FSP(+9)-excellent 11- DN, clearin=-13mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+18)-could be deeper, FSP(+11)-ok 12- DN, clearin=-13mm, NL04=0.8-0.87, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+20)-excelent, FSP(+11)-excellent 13- DN, clearin=-15mm, NL04=0.8-0.83, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+20)-could be deeper, FSP(+13)-could be deeper 14- DN, clearin=-15mm, NL04=0.8-0.83, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+21)-ok, FSP(+14)-ok 15- DN, clearin=-17mm, NL04=0.8-0.84, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+23)-ok, FSP(+17)-excellent 16- DN, clearin=-19mm, NL04=0.8-0.87, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+24)-excellent, FSP(+19)-excellent 17- DN, clearin=-21mm, NL04=0.8-0.87, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+24)-excellent, FSP(+20)-excellent 18- DN, clearin=-23mm, NL04=0.8-0.87, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+24)-first scan good, FSP(+21)-good 19- DN, clearin=-23mm, NL04=0.75-0.8, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.68, 0.88, 1.08s, ASP(+23)-first scan ok, FSP(+20)-could be deeper 20- DN, clearin=-23mm, NL04=0.65-0.72, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+26)-could be deeper, FSP(+24)-great 21- DN, clearin=-23mm, NL04=0.7, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+28)-ok, FSP(+24)-ok 22- OH2U power supply problem, DBN fires an heats inner wall 23- disrupts at 1 second, DN, clearin=-19mm, NL04=0.46, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+25)-ok, FSP(+20)-ok 24- fizzle 25- disrupts 0.7s 26- DN, clearin=-11mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.5, no probes scanning 27- DN, clearin=-11mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.67-0.5, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+18)-ok, FSP(+9)-ok 28- DN, clearin=-19mm, NL04=0.68-0.63, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+23)-could be deeper , FSP(+20)-could be deeper 29- DN, clearin=-19mm, NL04=0.68-0.65, Bt=5.6, Ip=0.8, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+26)-ok , FSP(+22)-ok 30- DN, gap=3mm, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.6, NL04=0.52-0.42, SP @ 0.75, 0.95, 1.15s, ASP(+19)-excellent, FSP(+8)-excellent |

| Run was devoted to MP#479 "Effect of magnetic shear on edge gradients" with B. LaBombard as Session Leader. Brian required a systematic scan of the inner gap at two densities for this run. We scanned Clearin from +3mm to -23 mm (strongly inner wall limited) at nl_04 ~ 8.0e19 m-2, then back out to -6 mm with nl_04 ~ 6e19 m-2 (not as low as Brian wanted, but it was what the machine gave us.) The outward scan was courser than the inward one.
Late in the run, Steve reported that an EF power supply was railed for most if not all the shots, and it is interesting that the shots nevertheless went off fairly well. There were more fizzles and disruptions than one would have liked, some of which were at least partially due to the beam firing without plasma. Brian believes that this results in loosely bound material on the inner wall, where the beam strikes it, and this material is easily knocked off particularly by inner wall limited plasmas. There was also one machine failure due to a loose connection in the power supply circuitry. This was easily fixed and did not result in a serious delay. Scorecard: 30 plasma attempts, 23 full length (at least well into rampdown), 3 fizzles (2 after disruptions), 3 disruptions and 1 commutation failure. |

| May 18 2007 01:25:34:403PM | 1070518018 | Ron Parker | Shot 18 ran well, startup better than shot 17, but no change was made.
Next: same gaps, nl_04 reduced to 4e19. |
| May 18 2007 01:34:01:530PM | 1070518019 | Ron Parker | 019. Plasma. Shot was OK |
| May 18 2007 01:47:10:287PM | 1070518020 | Ron Parker | 020. Plasma. The goal is nl_04=0.4e+20. nl_04 is actually 0.7e+20 |
| May 18 2007 02:00:17:040PM | 1070518021 | Ron Parker | 021. Plasma. nl_04=0.7e+20 |
| May 18 2007 02:20:33:800PM | 1070518021 | Ron Parker | Next shot: Returning to approximately the setup of shot 016. The only change is that CLEARIN is changed to -0.019 for this shot.
After shot 021, there was a "bang". The concensus was that this came from the power room. An inspection revealed nothing. |
| May 18 2007 02:23:00:220PM | 1070518022 | Ron Parker | 022. Power supply problems. OH2U |
| May 18 2007 02:39:29:070PM | 1070518022 | Ron Parker | 022. Power supply problems. OH2U
Problem has been diagnosed and traced to a broken connection in the commutation network. Short delay while problem is fixed. |
| May 18 2007 03:43:03:173PM | 1070518023 | Ron Parker | Shot 23 was ugly -- started up but disrupted just after 1 s.
Steve reports that EF power supply is railing during the shot --but it ran all day like this?! |
| May 18 2007 03:47:47:487PM | 1070518024 | Ron Parker | Shot 24 fizzled, not surprising after disruption on 23.
Beam is giving some problems due to firing without plasma. Beam valve disabled in order to try to finish run plan. |
| May 18 2007 04:09:26:747PM | 1070518025 | Ron Parker | Shot 25 disrupted at ~ 700 ms. |
| May 18 2007 04:29:14:363PM | 1070518026 | Ron Parker | Shot 26 ran well, Brian's probes were not set properly for this shot and we'll repeat. |
| May 18 2007 04:30:49:740PM | 1070518027 | Ron Parker | Shot 27 ran, we'll move the Clearin out to -19, similar to shot 16 but with lower density. |
| May 18 2007 04:56:09:077PM | 1070518028 | Ron Parker | Decent shot, a bit bumpy current rise but usable. Probes weren't deep enough so we'll repeat. |
| May 18 2007 04:53:56:967PM | 1070518029 | Ron Parker | Shot 29 ran OK, not a pretty startup but flattop OK. Next and final shot: Repeat of shot 8 with lower density.
|
| May 18 2007 05:10:29:847PM | 1070518030 | Ron Parker | Shot 30 was OK, disrupted on ramp down @ ~ 500 kA. |
