| Run of Randy's MP473. Plan will be to start with shot 1070426017. We will run
at 5T all day. The goal of the day will be to increase power and drive current. Hopefully we will see something on MSE if the DNB is working. We will require ~200ms of flat-top without ICRF before and after the LH pulse to get a good MSE baseline. LH phase shifters will be initially set to 90 degrees co-current-drive direction with the launcher 1.5mm behind the LH limiter. Shot Plan: Start with ~200kW of LH power at 90 degree ideal phasing. Check to make sure the CPS is working correctly and we are not arcing in the waveguides. Increase power to 500kW then 800+kW. We will be looking for clean (no/minimal trips) LH pulses from .8-1.3s. It will require some tweaking to the drive level of the individual klystrons to increase the power level. Repeat the above starting from ~500kW for 60 and 90 degree approximate phasing. Cell Access to change phase shifters to 0 degrees. Run 500ms shots with the first half in co-current-drive and the second half in counter-current-drive, 120 degree phasing in both cases, at the maximum power level we can achieve without too many trips. This should give an n|| spectrum similar to 60 degree ideal phasing, but with a slightly wider spectral peak. We would like to see some changes with MSE between the co- and counter-current-drive segments. We expect that getting the system to run in this configuration will be a bit tricky, especially since we have no experience running higher power in counter-current-drive configuration. |

| Summary for the first 2/3 of 1070523:
This was a run of MP473, "Lower Hybrid System Checkout and Initial Operation." Started the day with two shots of LH during rampup due to operator error. Some interesting modes (cascades?) were noticed on the magnetics on these shots. Not quite sure what to make of them and I will need to talk to Joe Snipes more about this. Switched LH start time to 800ms. The next few shots had early arcing, then tripped out and retried clean for the rest of the pulse. Dave Gwinn had an idea to turn on for ~20ms, then turn off for 20ms and turn on again to force this "conditioning" phenomenon we observed when the CPS system was left to do its job. I refer to this in the shot entries as a "dropout" as opposed to a CPS induced trip and retry. This worked at lower power levels but did not solve arcing on channels 7, 8, and 9 as we increased power. Generally after a second "CPS trip" they would run clean. Still, we were able to increase power enough to see LH induced H-modes. The LH H-modes reliably occurred around 1.1s into the shot, at which time the LH had been on for approximately .3s (not including time off due to dropout and/or trips). Coupling in the H-mode phase was ~30-35% refco vs ~20-25% during L-mode. An identical shot without LH did not reach H-mode, thus showing that the H-modes were in fact caused by the LH (plus, of course, the ohmic power). NETPOW levels of around 600kW caused these H-modes. Loop voltage drops of ~.2V were seen all day during L-mode operation. Despite density increase during H-mode, the loop voltage dropped another ~.2V during H-mode. This can be attributed to higher temperature, increased single pass absorption, and/or bootstrap current. The run was given over to Andrea at 2:30 for fast electron diffusion measurements. |

| We attempted to get LH-modulated data at two conditions with 90 deg LH phasing:
- nl04=5e19, Ip=800 kA - nl04=7.5e19, Ip=500 kA We got 4 shots at the first condition (21, 22, 23, 25), although there were several LH trips. We got part of a shot at the second condition (26) before LH faulted. |

| The machine ran well with very few problems until near the end of the run. Then, there was a computer problem that led to a no power test shot on shot 24. The last shot 27 fizzled inexplicably whereas all of the other shots had full length plasmas. A number of interesting results were obtained including clear LH induced H-modes. Shot 16 has a clear LH induced EDA H-mode with a QC mode at 150 kHz. Several other shots also had H-modes though the QC modes were not as clear. There were also some interesting high and low frequency magnetic fluctuations in the first two shots when the LH was injected from 0.02 to 0.1 s by mistake. A few shots were taken from shot 21 on for Andrea Schmidt. On shot 9, the TF rogowski reached 408 kA after the shot. The following shot was OK so we continued. Then, the last two shots 26 and 27 also had the same problem with the TF rogowski measurement, which were clearly false but indicate a problem with the integrator. So, the run ended early to investigate this problem. | May 23 2007 09:46:13:653AM | 1070523001 | Greg Wallace | Accidentally fired at 0s instead of .8s. Will retry next shot. |
| May 23 2007 09:46:26:153AM | 1070523002 | Greg Wallace | Accidentally fired again at 0s instead of .8s. Will retry next shot. |
| May 23 2007 10:02:30:370AM | 1070523003 | Greg Wallace | LH fired at .8s on this shot. One trip at .89s retried sucessfully. Loop voltage reduced by .15V. nl_04 6.9-7.6e19 m^-2.
Reflections a bit high on the top rows (40%) and noisy, better on the bottom (20%) but with some oscillation before trip. The oscillation appears to be an arc in 8C which goes away after the retry. Next shot will be same as this to see if arcing goes away. |
| May 23 2007 10:11:50:707AM | 1070523004 | Greg Wallace | LH fired at .8s on this shot. Nearly identical to shot 3. Again, one trip at .89s, clean after retry. Arcing appears to start in 8C. Next shot will try turning on from .8 to .84, then turning off until .86, then staying on until 1.3s.
nl_04 7.2-7.8e19 m-2. Loop voltage change of ~.15V during LH pulse. |
| May 23 2007 10:24:01:220AM | 1070523005 | Greg Wallace | LH fired at .8s. LH was intentionally turned off from .84 to .86s. The rest of the pulse ran cleanly after .86s despite an arc in 8C during the beginning of the shot. Next shot will shorten the length of pulse before the turnoff.
nl_04 of 7.3-8e19. Loop voltage change of ~.15V during LH pulse. |
| May 23 2007 10:49:15:903AM | 1070523006 | Greg Wallace | LH fired at .8s. Early turnoff supressed the arc sucessfully. We will try shortening the off time.
nl_04 of 7.2-7.8e19. Loop voltage change of ~.15V during LH pulse. |
| May 23 2007 11:01:40:173AM | 1070523007 | Greg Wallace | Pulse ran clean without any signs of arcing before nor after the dropout. This may be due to ramp starting at lower power. Next shot will move dropout later in the shot to see if new ramp waveform is really helping.
nl_04 of 7.1-7.6e19. Loop voltage change of ~.2V during LH pulse. |
| May 23 2007 11:10:00:113AM | 1070523008 | Greg Wallace | Arcing appears to be in 9C before the dropout---altered rampup waveform did not fix the problem. Next shot will move dropout back towards beginning of pulse.
nl_04 of 8-7e19. Loop voltage change of ~.2V during LH pulse. |
| May 23 2007 11:43:45:970AM | 1070523010 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran clean after dropout. Next shot will increase each klystron from 75 to 100kW.
nl_04 of 8.5-7.5e19. Loop voltage change of ~.2V during LH pulse. Spectrum analyzer trigger time moved to 100ms after start of LH pulse. |
| May 23 2007 12:02:38:150PM | 1070523011 | Greg Wallace |
circulstor arc then retries fail due to no forward power on that klystron |
| May 23 2007 12:07:32:027PM | 1070523012 | Greg Wallace |
circulstor arc #10 then retries fail due to no forward power on that klystron (same as shot 11) |
| May 23 2007 12:38:26:943PM | 1070523013 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran smoothly with NETPOW ~550kW until plasma went into H-mode at 1.05s. Ran into H-mode until 1.2s when there was an injection which caused density to rise rapidly from 1-5e18 on the LH probes and a big flash on the video display. Best guess is that the injection was not caused by LH?
Next shot will repeat, hopefully without flash. |
| May 23 2007 12:49:01:417PM | 1070523014 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran clean through at 525kW net power. Reflections are getting quite noisy on top rows, still pretty clean on the bottom rows. nl_04 dropping 8-7e19. Loop voltage change of ~.2V. Next shot will increase power to 125kW per klystron. |
| May 23 2007 01:03:32:453PM | 1070523015 | Greg Wallace | Many trips, did not retry sucessfully. Waveform was not programmed correctly, but main problem seems to be a trip in 8C again. Next shot will retry with standard waveform, all klystrons at 125kW except #4 which will be at 100kW. |
| May 23 2007 01:33:40:810PM | 1070523016 | Greg Wallace | Frequent trips during first half of LH pulse. H-mode at 1.2s. More arcing on #8C? Next shot will be repeat of same. |
| May 23 2007 01:53:25:130PM | 1070523017 | Greg Wallace | Initial dropout did not solve arcing problem in 9C. Tripout after 100ms killed the arc, however. Plasma went into H-mode at 1.1s and loop voltage dropped .2V during L-mode and an additional .3V in H-mode with LH on. Coupling was somewhat worse during H-mode, increasing from 25 to 30% REFCO. |
| May 23 2007 02:03:55:960PM | 1070523018 | Greg Wallace | More arcing on 9C. Next shot will decrease power on klys 5 and also ramp on the retry after the dropout. |
| May 23 2007 02:25:42:923PM | 1070523019 | Greg Wallace | More arcing immediately after the initial dropout in 9C. Another good H-mode at 1.1sec. Next shot will be with no LH. |
| May 23 2007 02:44:23:417PM | 1070523021 | Andrea Schmidt | This will be low density (5e19 requested), LH modulated from 0.5 to 1.2 s, 90 degree phasing. |
| May 23 2007 03:11:31:783PM | 1070523022 | Andrea Schmidt | nl04=5e19, modulated LH from 0.5 to 1.2 s, 90 degree phasing. |

| May 23 2007 05:03:35:140PM | 1070523025 | Andrea Schmidt | nl04=5e19, modulated LH from 0.5 to 1.2 s, 90 degree phasing. Next shot will be same. |
| May 23 2007 05:04:04:310PM | 1070523026 | Andrea Schmidt | nl04=5e19, modulated LH from 0.5 to 1.2 s, 90 degree phasing. |

| May 23 2007 09:37:24:430AM | 1070523001 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 1: Loaded shot 1070426017. Loaded segment 1 from shot 1070517023 into segment 1 for startup. Recalculated all magnetics predictors in segments 2 and 3 but not 4. Good shot. Got LH from 0.02 to 0.103 s. Some interesting AE activity from 0.022 to 0.031 s between 200 kHz and 600 kHz. There is also a low frequency MHD mode around 3 kHz just before 0.1 s. These modes suggest some LHCD in the current rise. Good shot. |
| May 23 2007 09:45:45:717AM | 1070523002 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 2: Repeat. Again got LH pulse in the current rise. Some interesting AE activity up to 750 kHz between 0.02 and 0.04 s. Low frequency MHD also between 0.03 and 0.1 s from 15 kHz down to near 0 kHz. Good shot. |
| May 23 2007 09:56:00:640AM | 1070523003 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 3: Enabled argon puff from 0.3 to 0.4 s. Set fizzle detector to 2.1 s for TF rampdown in case of a fizzle to improve OH coil resistance. Good shot. Baseline offset on BP11_BC of 1.1 x 10^-2 Wb. LH now on from 0.8 to 1.3 s. |

| May 23 2007 04:22:33:390PM | 1070523026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Reduced Ip to 0.5 MA, increased nl04 to 7.5 x 10^19 m^-2 and reduced RCUR by 1.5 mm. LH is modulated but there is a huge D alpha and Prad spike around 0.55 s perhaps due to an injection from the LH grill. Otherwise it is a good shot. |
| May 23 2007 04:39:53:163PM | 1070523027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 27: Fizzle! |
| May 23 2007 05:03:20:717PM | 1070523027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 28: Enabled LPI to inject a lithium pellet at 1.3 s. Run ended prematurely before shot 28 to investigate problems with the TF rogowski integrator measurements that gave apparent TF currents of 408.3 kA. |
