| Start out the day with fast-modulated LH at 60 deg ideal phasing to obtain two conditions (preferably 4 good shots at each condition):
1) nl04=5e19, Ip=800 kA (starting shot 1070523023) 2) nl04=5e19, Ip=500 kA Then change to 120 degree ideal phasing to obtain one condition: 1) nl04=5e19, Ip=800 kA If there is extra time, we will change to 90 degree ideal phasing to obtain one condition: 1) nl04=7.5e19, Ip=500 kA |

| 60 degree ideal current drive with same plasma as yesterday went into H-mode immediately after LH turned off. Switched to 120 degree ideal phasing but could not couple even after moving upper x-point out and reducing outer gap to near zero. Even with "zero" outer gap there was no heating on the LH grill or limiters. |

| We tried to obtain LH-modulated xray data for several plasma conditions. We started with 60 degree ideal phasing, Ip=800, nl04=5e19 (shots 1-7). Out of these, shots 5-7 were very successful with no/few trips and LH coupled powers where we wanted them, a little higher than 400 kW.
We then lowered to Ip=500 (shots 8 to 12), with few/no trips on shots 10-12. Shots 13-17 were run by Greg Wallace on MP 473. We then changed the LH phasing to 120 degrees ideal. For shots 18+, we tried to couple the 120 deg LH modulation, with good results on shots 22, 26, and 29. |

| This run did not place heavy demand on the PO as the shots were mainly Ohmic with various levels of LH power. The run was mostly devoted to Andrea's MP468. The machine performed well for most of the day. Problems were encountered in coupling the LH power at high n_par (~3.1) since a small evanescent layer at the grill makes coupling much more difficult at high n_par. We ended up pushing the outer gap negative in order to bring the density at the grill up to a level required for good coupling. (There is some question about EFIT's accuracy when the outer gap is + or - 1mm.) Still, even with reasonable grill densities, trips in the LH pulse train were a problem. In the future it seems that we could afford to desensitize a few reflection coefficient trip levels. But in the end, good data were obtained at the high n_par for 800 kA and nl_04 ~5-6e19m-2.
One problem that developed late in the run, specifically shots 26 and 27 (the latter was a dud) was a sudden increase in BZ(0) to 2.5 mT positive. The cause was traced to OH1 current not following accurately its demand (off by about 300 amps.) As mentioned, this caused a dud on shot 27, but was corrected for shot 29 by delibeerately setting the demand for OH1 300 A greater than the usual level (from -19,600 to -19,300). With this change, BZ(0) was restored to 0 and shot 29 went off well. [PO FOR 1070525 PLEASE NOTE]. Scorecard: 29 attempts at plasma, 2 duds (one of which was due to aforemtnioned OH1 problem), 1 disruption, 1 fizzle following disruption, 1 no power shot(PO error in loading shot) and 24 full length shots. |

| May 24 2007 11:10:51:487AM | 1070524007 | Andrea Schmidt | Low density (nl04=5e19), modulated LH pulses from 0.5 to 1.5 s, 60 degree ideal phasing. Next shot will be lower current (500 kA). |
| May 24 2007 11:11:15:050AM | 1070524008 | Andrea Schmidt | Low density (nl04=5e19), modulated LH pulses from 0.5 to 1.5 s, 60 degree ideal phasing, Ip=500 kA. Next shot will be same. |
| May 24 2007 12:41:39:397PM | 1070524013 | Greg Wallace | 60 degree ideal repeat of shot 1070523017. Waves barely accessable into L-mode. Plasma went into H-mode after end of LH pulse, possibly because of sudden jump in ohmic heating power. Next shot will be same but with 120 ideal phasing. |
| May 24 2007 01:23:11:500PM | 1070524014 | Greg Wallace | 120 ideal current drive direction. High intrinsic reflection on top row caused nothing but trips. Next shot will move upper x-point out by 2cm to increase density on top half of grill. |
| May 24 2007 01:46:50:750PM | 1070524016 | Greg Wallace | More trips. Top row is still the problem. Next shot will move upper x-point out by 1.5cm. |
| May 24 2007 04:50:52:710PM | 1070524017 | Greg Wallace | More trips. Top row is still the problem. Turning the run over to Andrea. |

| May 24 2007 08:51:41:310AM | 1070524001 | Ron Parker | First few shots will be loaded from 1070523023 with LH pulses. |
| May 24 2007 09:07:51:923AM | 1070524001 | Ron Parker | First shot ran well, several trips on LH pulses.
Try it again. |
| May 24 2007 09:12:51:863AM | 1070524001 | Ron Parker | Short delay while TF Rogowski is checked. |
| May 24 2007 10:14:22:810AM | 1070524002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 ran OK. CMODWS30 hung up after shot, resulting in delay needed to reboot. |
| May 24 2007 10:16:32:980AM | 1070524003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 ran OK. Trouble with getting to logbook on Firefox. |
| May 24 2007 10:27:43:690AM | 1070524004 | Ron Parker | Shot 4 was a dud. |
| May 24 2007 10:38:01:473AM | 1070524005 | Ron Parker | Shot 5 ran well, no indication why 4 was a dud!
Next: One more repeat. |
| May 24 2007 10:47:14:790AM | 1070524006 | Ron Parker | Shot 6 ran well, no drop outs in LH pulse train.
One more repeat. |
| May 24 2007 11:26:56:820AM | 1070524007 | Ron Parker | Shot 7 ran OK, LH pulse train OK until ~ 1.4 s.
Next: lower current to 500 kA, same density. |
| May 24 2007 11:27:18:400AM | 1070524008 | Ron Parker | Shot 8 ran OK, but LH tripped. |
| May 24 2007 11:29:26:853AM | 1070524009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 ran OK, but LH pulse train gave up after ~0.9 s,even with several retries. |
| May 24 2007 12:02:14:977PM | 1070524010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 ran well, good LH pulse train. |
| May 24 2007 12:02:53:740PM | 1070524011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 was good, RF pulse train ran until end without fault. |
| May 24 2007 12:44:58:587PM | 1070524012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 ran well, LH pulse train ran without faults. |
| May 24 2007 02:05:43:943PM | 1070524013 | Ron Parker | This shot reverted back to shot 1070523017 in attempt to reproduce H mode
with 60 degree phasing. As expected (well, maybe after the fact), H-mode occurred only after LH turned off. This gave a "bump" in loop voltage that was apparently enough to trigger H-mode. [Note: After several Ohmic H-modes without LH it is not clear what role LH is playing]. Next, we'll stay with this shot but go to 120 deg phasing for better coupling after H-mode sets in. In addition, we'll close the "right gap" by 2 mm. |
| May 24 2007 01:43:11:950PM | 1070524014 | Ron Parker | Shot 14 ran OK, but LH did not due to multiple faults.
Next: Move upper X-Point out 2 mm (oops) to improve coupling to top row. |
| May 24 2007 01:33:49:700PM | 1070524015 | Ron Parker | Same result, good shot, but no LH due to multiple trips. |
| May 24 2007 01:58:56:613PM | 1070524016 | Ron Parker | Again, good shot but no luck coupling and LH trips out on each retry.
Next:try one more time--with RXU out 1.5 cm. |
| May 24 2007 02:29:42:440PM | 1070524017 | Ron Parker | Shot 17 ran well, but no luck in coupling. Top of columns 5&6 seem to be tripping
the LH off. |
| May 24 2007 02:32:57:783PM | 1070524018 | Ron Parker | Shot 18 ran OK. We are back to Andrea's run, trying for fast modulation of LH
power at 120 deg phasing. Unfortunately, there were still frequent trips for this shot. However, the density was reduced and this resulted in a drop of density at grill. Next: try again, with outer gap reduced by 2mm. |
| May 24 2007 02:49:32:337PM | 1070524019 | Ron Parker | Still coupling problems. Next: Close right gap 2 mm. |
| May 24 2007 03:06:42:953PM | 1070524021 | Ron Parker | Shot 20 did a little better with coupling, but not a full pulse train.
Next: Close outer gap 2 more mm. |
| May 24 2007 03:15:23:923PM | 1070524021 | Ron Parker | Shot ran well, but RF faults apparently due to circulator arc in klystron 10.
We'll lower that Klystron's power and try again. |
| May 24 2007 03:34:50:463PM | 1070524022 | Ron Parker | Success. Good shot, good RF pulse train. Next: repeat. |
| May 24 2007 03:42:02:967PM | 1070524023 | Ron Parker | Ouch! Shot 23 disrupted hard on the inner wall. |
| May 24 2007 03:56:37:753PM | 1070524024 | Ron Parker | Shot 24 was a "cleaning" shot, following the disruption. It fizzled.
Next: Try again |
| May 24 2007 04:23:23:200PM | 1070524025 | Ron Parker | Shot 25 went off OK, but LH pulse train didn't. |
| May 24 2007 04:35:23:830PM | 1070524026 | Ron Parker | Shot 26 ran well and useful LH data was obtained. A couple of longer pulses interferred with the desired picket fence pulse train, but these can be accounted for in the data reduction. |
| May 24 2007 04:59:19:497PM | 1070524027 | Ron Parker | Another dud! Why?
It appears that OH1 is not following its demand by ~ 300 A, which gives a BZ error of about +2mT. To correct, we've increased the OH1 current by 300 A, from -19,600 to -19,300 A. This problem began with shot 26. |
| May 24 2007 05:04:07:873PM | 1070524028 | Ron Parker | Shot 28 was a no power shot, OH1 current change wasn't loaded prior to init. |
| Jun 5 2007 02:08:02:543PM | 1070524029 | Ron Parker | Against all odds, the shot went, the LH pulse train was perfect (no trips) and Brock got to fire his pellet.
More importantly, the OH1 was close to its nominal value even though it was set 300 A lower, i.e., set @ -19,300 and realized -19,700. This problem needs to be either fixed, or accounted for, for tomorrow's run. |
