SL-Plan MP#: 481 "Stereo Imaging of Lithium Pellet Ablation Striations" SL: Brock Bose PURPOSE: To gather data on the statistics of the variation of the poloidal motion of striated ion structures that form during lithium pellet ablation using the pelle imaging diagnostic. GOAL: To perform radial scans of the pellet ablation during SNL H-mode (with 2.5 MW of rf), and SNU L-mode (with 2.5 MW of rf) plasmas. The radial scan will be accomplished by adjusting the time delay in data acquisition after the trigger on the PSI-4 camera. If time permits, a radial scan with an upper single null and no rf will be performed to gauge the effect on the striation behavior due to auxilary heating. Run Plan: (1) 2 Shots SNL to check PSI camera exposure (2) 6 shots SNL with 2.5 MW of RF power from D&E antenas to perform radial scan of pellet ablation during H-mode plasmas (3) 6 shots SNU with 2.5 MW of RF power from D&E antenas to perform radial scan of pellet ablation during L-mode plasmas If time and the conditions permitt (4) 6 shots SNU without RF to gauge any effects on the ablation process that may be caused by auxiliary heating. For SNU: load 1070525013 programed for nl04 = 1e20 m^-2, Ip = 800 kA For SNL: load 1070510012 programed for nl04 = 1e20 m^-2, Ip = 800 kA

RUN SUMMARY MP#: 481 "Stereo Imaging of Lithium Pellet Ablation Striations" SL: Brock Bose Results: Overall it was a satisfactory run. During the first half of the day data was taken during pellet injections into 5 SNL plasmas in H-mode and 1 SNU plasma in H-mode. Mid day was plagued by fizzles, but 15 minutes of helium ECDC after shot 18 seemed to improve the situation. The afternoon saw reliable SNU plasmas with good RF. Unfortunately, problems with the camera and the pellet injector limited the number of shots with usable data to a partial radial scan of 2 SNU plasmas with 1.5 MW of RF but no H-mode, and one shot into SNU H-mode with 2 MWs of RF. (2) 5 shots SNL with 2 MW of RF power from D&E antennas to perform radial scan of pellet ablation during H-mode plasmas (3) 2 shots SNU with 1.5 MW of RF power from D&E antennas to perform radial scan of pellet ablation during L-mode plasmas Additionally, 1 shot into SNU H-mode with 2 MW RF. Analysis will be finished by Monday.

We ran two discharges today. The LSN (shots 001 - 013) is based on 1070510012 with segment 1 based on segment 1 of 1070525030. This discharge ran reproducibly after we got past a computer problem and a power supply problem. The carbon signals were much lower than those observed on run 1050529. There were no fizzles during this part of the run as there were on 1050529 although segment 1 was essentially the same for both runs. Overnight ECDC did its job well in recovery from the dirt introduced with the EF3/valve interaction that occurred yesterday. The upper single null is based on 1070525013. Segment 1 was taken from the previous shot during this run, 1070530012. The first 10 shots with this configuration displayed the alternating plasma/fizzle which was previously observed in runs 1070511 and 1070516. ECDC in helium did not break the cycle as it did on run 1070516. Variation of prefill and BR_0 did not break the cycle, and it did not work for 1070511. The last 8 shots for this run were all full length plasmas. These shots were essentially identical in DPCS setup to those that displayed alternating plamsas and fizzles. There was one shot in which EF1 did not follow the demand. This did not repeat on the following shots.
