Run Plan for 1070602, pm session

MP#489 "Damping rate of TAEs near stability threshold with ICRF fast ions"

Goal
****
Observe the stability of moderate n (~6-14) TAEs relative to the ICRF generated ion tail temperature as the ICRF power is successively increased. This experiment was preliminarily investigated on 1060526 under MP#404a, and will be resumed now with an improved set of magnetic field probes.

Run Preparation
***************
* Prepare argon for HIREX
* Setup GPC2 gratings for 5.8~6.0 T
* Enable the dpcs_ftae2 procedure in DPCS (see Wolfe email of 1070601)
* Turn on Active MHD and set qAE to 1.5, AE_order to 2
* Allow boron dust puffing

Run Plan
********
Reload equilibrium from 1060526032 but with negative field and current.

Shot Plan
*********
Begin by reproducing results from 1060526; look for stable TAEs throughout RF heating phase. Then increase Bt to move ICRF off axis but maintain sufficient heating (watch ECE temp and neutron rate, CNPA if available). Run Picrf=2MW during 0.75-1.5s

001 Field = -5.4T, Ip=-0.8MA, NL04=0.7e20
002 Set field to -5.7T, Ip=-0.6MA, NL04=0.7e20
003 -5.9T
004 -6.1T

At highest field that maintains sufficient heating, step RF power by 0.5MW every shot up to max available power. As time allows, repeat highest power shot, then decrease by 0.5MW every shot to repeat conditions. Run RF during 0.75-1.5s at the following powers:

005 0MW
006 0.5MW
007 1.0MW
008 1.5MW
009 2.0MW
010 2.5MW
011 3.0MW?
012 3.0MW
013 2.5MW

SL Plan:

Goal:

Verify J dipole configuration and investigate range of operation for
given neutral pressure.

Plan:

Use near "standard" LSN (1070510007) and near double null (1070601023)
H-mode discharges to

1. Test power handling of J dipole configuration
2. scan plasma density -> establish density range
start at nl_04~0.7->1.4 or neutral limit
3. scan plasma current - does it effect neutral limit
4. if time available, test operation in presence of cryopump
5. if time available, neutral pressure limits with He plasmas

Dipole configuration works over much broader pressure range in
comparison to 4-strap configuration. The J dipole, ~0.65 mTorr, is
not quite as good as D and E, ~1 mTorr, at 0.8 MA. Would like to
investigate this limit further by having a larger current and density
scan.

The run started out trying to reproduce results from 1060526032. The first three shots had bad tuning in the Active MHD amplifiers due to the old DPCS module, but that was quickly sorted out. There was trouble tuning J antenna so we only got up to 2MW, a good deal lower than the 3.5MW achieved on 1060526. But there were quite a few clear resonances observed, and the heating was successfully moved off axis. We stayed at -5.9T to make tuning J easier, but even -6.1T seemed to allow good heating efficiency.

Shot summary
014: Attempt to duplicate 1060526032. Used old module.
015: Same.
016: Attempt at 5.7T. Still old module.
017: New DPCS_ftae2 module loaded. -5.7T, -0.6MA, 0.7e20, 1.7MW. Several clear resonances

We started out with a data system problem that required Mark and Henry
to reboot all the data servers. Shot 01 was then a no power shot to
check that everything was okay. Shot 02 was the first plasma shot,
the rf fiducial LSN, 1 MA, 9e19/^2.

On shot 08 and 12 today the TF current exceeded the request by 2 and 5
kA respectively. The run was delayed by about an hour to investigate.
It appeared to be the AFOL link between the DPCS and the TF control
cabinet. There is a 0.2 V offset that needs to be fixed. After going
in and looking at the AFOL the following shot was fine (13)

We made the switch from mp355 to 485 on shot 14. I forgot to reload
dpcs_ftea2 and caused the MHD antenna to misbehave for a couple of
shots. This error was corrected on shot 17.

The machine ran extremely well today, with 100% startup. The only
problem was on shot 24 which disrupted at 1.06 s with an injection
