| Session Leader Plan for 1070606: MP473 "LH System Checkout and Initial Operation"
The purpose of today's run will be to try to increase the LH power and pulselength to greater than 600kW for 500ms. MSE will be attempting to measure a change in the current profile when LH is on. Starting shot will be 1070523019. Set launcher to 1.5mm behind limiter and set phase shifters to 90deg current drive direction. LH will fire from 800ms to 1300ms. We will be staying at 5.5T all day for MSE. Start with ~200kW of LH power at 90 degree ideal phasing. Check to make sure the CPS is working correctly and we are not arcing in the waveguides. Increase power to 500kW then 800+kW. We will be looking for clean (no/minimal trips) LH pulses from .8-1.3s. It will require some tweaking to the drive level of the individual klystrons to increase the power level. Cell Access to change phase shifters to 0 degrees. Run 500ms shots with the first half in co-current-drive and the second half in counter-current-drive, 120 degree approximate phasing in both cases, at the maximum power level we can achieve without too many trips. This should give an n|| spectrum similar to 60 degree ideal phasing, but with a slightly wider spectral peak. We would like to see some changes with MSE between the co- and counter-current-drive segments. We expect that getting the system to run in this configuration will be a bit tricky, especially since we have no experience running higher power in counter-current-drive configuration. |

| Two plasma shots after many delays. Gave up at 16:20 due to computer issues. Next day will be LH + ICRF. |

| Computer problems all day -- late start, long delays, early termination.
The good news, no duds, no fizzles, no disruptions. The bad news, only two shots. |

| Jun 6 2007 02:42:03:653PM | 1070606002 | Greg Wallace | First shot of the day at 15:30. All klystrons set at 100kW. No large changes in loop voltage. Coupling looks quite bad on the upper rows of the grill, near 50% reflection. Bottom rows noisy but near 25% reflection. Decreasing outer gap to "0" cm to help increase edge density without increasing core.
Arcing see on REV10B during first part of pulse. "Dropout" did not solve arcing problem, although secondary tripping did. |
| Jun 6 2007 03:02:44:640PM | 1070606003 | Greg Wallace | Arcing on RINT2/REV3B. Next shot will turn down power on klystron 2 and turn on cryopump. Hopefully core density will decrease without killing edge density.
Perhaps .1V reduction in loop voltage. Lowering core density should help us see more current. |

| Jun 6 2007 09:35:52:437AM | 1070606001 | Ron Parker | A belated good morning.
Computer problems have delayed the start of the run. The computer in question is a server that interfaces with the PLC's that run the machine. Although the server problem has been resolved, cooling the TF has only now begun. As a result, there will be a ~ 3 hour delay before the first shot tentatively scheduled for 12:30. |
| Jun 6 2007 12:38:10:093PM | 1070606001 | Ron Parker | Shot 1 started to count down at 12:30, but had to be aborted because of problem with state machine. |
| Jun 6 2007 02:42:24:217PM | 1070606002 | Ron Parker | Finally, the first shot of the day. It went off well, good breakdown, good steady-state. LH power at ~500 kW, reflection somewhat high in top rows, only about delV/V ~ 0.1 (90 deg phasing). For nest shot, reduce the outer gap by ~7mm. |
| Jun 6 2007 02:59:20:047PM | 1070606003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 ran OK, coupling improved with higher density at grill.
Next: No change in shot, cryopump on. How does density at grill change? |
| Jun 6 2007 03:10:43:017PM | 1070606004 | Ron Parker | Shot 4 was a no power shot. |
| Jun 6 2007 03:22:14:703PM | 1070606005 | Ron Parker | Again, a no power shot! |
| Jun 6 2007 03:29:29:077PM | 1070606005 | Ron Parker | Since cryopump is in operation, prefill pulse has been increased by 20 ms (to 38 ms). |
| Jun 6 2007 04:22:28:467PM | 1070606005 | Ron Parker |
th..th...th...that's all folks. The run is termine. |
