| MP430 - Between shot boronization
ECDC a few hours in He or D2. Note - We will be using 10% diborane 90% He mixture. We will be operating at a foreline pressure of 35 mTorr. Probably will not use cryopump because of concern that, even at 77K, it will pump the diborane. Tests are needed. The estimated vapor pressure of diborane at 77K is 0.5mT which may be right at the pressure used for boronization. 1) Take 1-2 shots - 1070608021 is fine (or more recent 1 MA shot). 2.5-3MW or RF requested. Basically our 1 MA standard shot. This will be the un-boronized background 2) Process: Boronization between shots with a fixed radius (200 sec sweep, 20 sec dwell) for a minimum of 10 minutes at first (may want 15 minutes later). Take 2 shots to ascertain the effect. Make sure the last shot returns to shot in step 1. 3) The above sequence (boronization followed by 2 shots) will be started with the resonance centered at 70 cm to ascertain length of boronization. Make it longer if no effect. 4) Boronize sequence (1 shot to measure effect, 2nd shot to determine if it has worn off) using 10 cm wide scans to cover the range 90-50 cm. Work from outer major radius inward in 5 cm steps. (10 shots minimum not including fizzles) 5) Evaluate the effectiveness of boronization through several parameters - the rate of rise of radiation at the beginning of the H-mode, the radiation just before the tramsition, the H-factor, neutron level in H-mode. 5) Once done with the scan, return to the most effective location. |

| MP#430 - Between shot boronization
Goal of this run is to determine, under new conditions, the optimal boronization resonance location. We had previously done this scan in 1050810 with 20% diborane/80%He & 50MHz ICRF. This run was done with the vertical field on during the boronization to reduce radial losses, 35 mTorr on the foreline pressure (instead of 50 mT) to keep the boronization out of H-port, 10% diborane, & 78 MHz ICRF. We were limited to 2 MW today due to a loss of D antenna for the day. All boronizations were for 10 minutes with the resonance at a fixed radius (10 cm sweep on 1050810). As measured recently the deposition profile is of order 10-15 cm wide. Each boronization was followed by at least 2 discharges to make sure the boronization wore off before the next boronization. All plasmas were 1MA and nl04 ~ 1e20 m-2. The run started slowly as there were issues to deal with. The 2 fiducial shots, pre-boronization, are shots 6 & 7. Boronizations were done before the following shot #s 8 (R=70) 11 (R=90) 13 (R=85) 15 (R=80) 18 (R=75) 21 (R=70) 23 (R=65) 26 (R=60) 29 (R=87) 33 (R=83) As can be seen from the following figure the radiated power (2pi diode with x2 multiplier), the time derivative of the 2pi bolo_diode (no multiplier) before the H-mode and during the initial density rise, all show a minimum in the region of the resonance location of 80 cm.
The radiated power can be replotted on the same graph with the Mo brightness measured by the McPherson (116 Angstroms) spectrograph. The Mo brightness value was averaged over the period before the H-mode when the RF power was on (Matt Reinke). The radiated power is taken just before the H-mode transition. Note that I have subtracted 280kW from the prad_diode. Note also the strong correlation between the 2 signals. The implication is that while the Mo radiation was essentially zeroed before the H-mode (during full RF power) the radiated power was reduced of order a factor of 2. Given the uncertainty in the 2pi_diode calibration (some people use a factor of 2, some others use a multiplier of 3) this means that 250-400 kW of radiation remains (~2MW ICRF, 1MW Ohmic), so about 10-15% radiated power.
Lastly I plot the value of both the total stored energy and 'neuts and hards' signal vs boronization resonance radius. The wtot is the maximum value during the H-mode while the neuts and hards value is taken as an average over the first H-mode. They also show a clear maximum in the region of 80 cm for the resonance.
- The 'sweet spot' appears to be around 80 cm. Note that there are 2 resonances the ECRH resonance which is what is discussed above and plotted, as well as the upper hybrid resonance, which is 8 cm further out. The Upper hybrid resonance correxponds to a higher plasma density. The innermost major radius of the limiters is around 82 cm. The midplane radius of the limiters is 90.5. So the sweet spot, which extends at least from 80 - 90 cm, corresponds to boronizing the outer limiter. The width of the sweet spot is slightly less than 20 cm. This is probably consistent with what was measured by the Surface Science Station (S^3) - see 5/14/07 C-Mod weekly meeting talk by Niels Gierse. Note also that the S^3 results show the deposition extends up to 20 outward in major radius from the ECRF resonance location. Issues - plan to optimize boronization further so we may need to repeat some of this. For example we plan to utilize S^3 to measure the boronization deposition rate as a function of the fill pressure and to compare 20% to 10% diborane. |

| Until we had a disruption on shot 29, the machine ran extremely well
today. Cutting back the prefill to 8 ms for the first shot following boronization, and then going to 10 ms on the next shot worked all day until we had the disruption. Shot 09 fizzled because of too much gas (I tried to move back to more standard prefills following the second shot following boronization). The disruption, due to an injection, required several fizzles to recover from, and the carbon level never returned to its pre-disruption level. The carbon levels trended down all day, as did the h/d, probably indicating something interesting about their source location relative to the "sweet spot" for improved performance. On shot 17 we had no prepuff at all and no voltage to the b-top piezo. I believe we have seen this problem before, and we should work our way through the gas system maze of wiring. The TF did not follow programming and worked its way up near the PLC limit on shot 03. We could find nothing wrong with the DPCS signals going to the TF during subsequent no power test shots, and the TF performed properly the rest of the day. Boronization started for shot 08. score ----- Tests 01,02,04,05 plasmas 03,06,07,08,10,11,12,13,14,15 16,18,19,20,21,22,23,24,25,26 27,29,33,34 fizzles 09,28,30,31,32 duds 17 disruptions 29 Problems -------- Computer servers caused run delay. Restart required. TF went to 5.8 T when we asked for 5.4 T on shot 3. No prepuff on shot 17 produced a dud |
