| Session Leader Plan for 1070613: MP473 "LH System Checkout and Initial Operation"
The purpose of today's run will be to try to increase the LH power and pulselength to greater than 600kW for 500ms. MSE will be attempting to measure a change in the current profile when LH is on. This will be a repeat of 1070606 which was scrubbed due to computer failure. Starting shot will be 1070606003, but decreasing target density to 5e19 m^-3. Set launcher to 1.5mm behind limiter and set phase shifters to 90deg current drive direction. LH will fire from 800ms to 1300ms. We will be staying at 5.5T all day for MSE. Start with ~400kW of LH power at 90 degree ideal phasing. Check to make sure the CPS is working correctly and we are not arcing in the waveguides. Increase power to 600kW then 800+kW. We will be looking for clean (no/minimal trips) LH pulses from .8-1.3s. It will require some tweaking to the drive level of the individual klystrons to increase the power level. Cell Access to change phase shifters to 0 degrees. Run 500ms shots with the first half in co-current-drive and the second half in counter-current-drive, 120 degree approximate phasing in both cases, at the maximum power level we can achieve without too many trips. This should give an n|| spectrum similar to 60 degree ideal phasing, but with a slightly wider spectral peak. We would like to see some changes with MSE between the co- and counter-current-drive segments. We expect that getting the system to run in this configuration will be a bit tricky, especially since we have no experience running higher power in counter-current-drive configuration. |

| Summary for 1070613
Much better results than last week with respect to increasing LH power. Fixing the phaseshifter settings on cart 3 helped dramatically with the reflections on 17 which were preventing long pulses previously. We had several good shots (4-8, 15, 16, 20, all at 90 deg phasing) with minimal trips and ~.5V reduction in loop voltage and signs of q-profile change from MSE. Maximum sustained power of 725kW on shot 20 is a substantial improvement over last week. There are still problems with arcing in several waveguides, notably 7-10 and 23 on the C row where the gasket is known to be misaligned. Switched to 60 degree phasing after shot 20 but did not have much luck. The intrinsic reflection on waveguides 9 & 23, in addition to some arcing issues on klystron 5 waveguides, prevented sustained high power operation at 60. The final two shots were an attempt to run low n|| in both the co- and counter-current directions during the same pulse. (This can be achieved by setting the mechanical phase shifters to 0 and running 120 degree phasing co- and counter-current, which essentially creates a waveguide which is twice as wide, which at twice the phase progression gives the same n||.) Ultimately these shots did not run sucessfully due to the CPS tripping on high reflections on waveguide 6 Top. |

Run summary for Wednesday 13 June 2007
MP 473: LH operation
Session leader: G. Wallace
Physics operator: R. Granetz
The machine ran very reliably today. Nearly all shots were full-length
plasmas. The lower hybrid ran well on a number of shots, some with LH
power exceeding 700 kW. However, faulting of the LH continued to be a
problem on the majority of shots. The DNB ran flawlessly on all shots.
Most notably, MSE clearly saw a change in pitch angle during LH current
drive on several mid-radii channels, with little change seen on core
channels. Very promising.
Scorecard: 28 plasmas
0 duds
0 fizzles
0 power supply tests
0 no-power MDS shot cycles

| Jun 13 2007 09:20:37:820AM | 1070613001 | Greg Wallace | LH trips out on all segments. Problem appears to be 21T. Edge density reading 2-3e19 looks good. nl04 of 5e19. |
| Jun 13 2007 09:30:17:350AM | 1070613002 | Greg Wallace | More trips. Cart 1&2 did not fire due to fault from previous shot not being cleared. Next shot will change phase on klystron 11 by -10 degrees. |
| Jun 13 2007 09:42:07:507AM | 1070613003 | Greg Wallace | Reflections on 21T worse than before. Moving phase in this direction did not work. Will try increasing phase on klystron 11 by 15 degrees compared to "normal" on the next shot. |
| Jun 13 2007 10:05:04:127AM | 1070613004 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! LH ran full length with no trips. +15 degrees on klystron 11 seems to have helped. Density still looks good on LH probes, although maybe a bit low. Next shot will move upper x-point out by 1cm to increase density at top of grill a bit. 0.25V reduction in Vloop. Next shot will increase power to 100kW per klystron. |
| Jun 13 2007 10:27:18:380AM | 1070613005 | Greg Wallace | 4 trips during LH pulse. Clear arcing in 23 bottom. Possibly something in 12 top on the forward signal. Next shot will turn down klystron 12 to 80kW. |
| Jun 13 2007 10:41:48:817AM | 1070613006 | Greg Wallace | Waveguide 3 bottom arcing during first part of pulse. Arcing went away after tripout. Otherwise a great shot with .2-.3V reduction in Vloop. Next shot will increase klystron power to 115kW except tube 12 which will stay at 80kW, and try to decrease core density. |
| Jun 13 2007 10:50:37:533AM | 1070613007 | Greg Wallace | Filiment fault shortened LH pulse. Next shot will keep klystron drive levels same but add a "dropout" at the end of the ramp. Line averaged density went down somewhat. ~0.4V of loop voltage reduction with 600kW of net power. |
| Jun 13 2007 11:12:16:597AM | 1070613008 | Greg Wallace | Good current drive but some arcing problems on the bottom of waveguide 3. Next shot will turn down klystron 2 to 75kW but increase others to 130kW. |
| Jun 13 2007 11:29:09:003AM | 1070613009 | Greg Wallace | Lower hybrid trips after initial ramp and did not turn back on. Arcing in waveguide 9 bottom. Next shot will try tweaking the phase on klystron 7 and turning klystron 5 down to 115kW. |
| Jun 13 2007 11:41:33:160AM | 1070613010 | Greg Wallace | More arcing in waveguide 9 bottom. Will try starting the ramp from lower power and ramping more slowly on the next shot. Perhaps also some problems from waveguide 14. |
| Jun 13 2007 12:21:00:363PM | 1070613011 | Greg Wallace | Looks like there might be an arc in waveguide 14. Next shot will turn down klystron 7 to 115kW. |
| Jun 13 2007 12:22:50:847PM | 1070613012 | Greg Wallace | Sudden jump in channel 14 is the problem again. Next shot will try changing phasing on klystron 8 up by 15 degrees and turning power down on klystron 7 to 75kW. |
| Jun 13 2007 12:45:16:113PM | 1070613013 | Greg Wallace | More arcing in waveguide 9 bottom. Seems to retry sucessfully, then arc in waveguide 14 between the jungle gym and the pant leg split. |
| Jun 13 2007 01:03:29:597PM | 1070613014 | Greg Wallace | Trip again after ramp. Next shot will turn down arcing klystrons. |
| Jun 13 2007 01:02:55:533PM | 1070613015 | Greg Wallace | More arcing in waveguide 3 during second part of pulse. First and third parts of pulse look good. |
| Jun 13 2007 01:21:09:253PM | 1070613016 | Greg Wallace | Good shot! 600kW net power for almost the entire pulse. One trip right at the end of the pulse. Steady .4V reduction in Vloop. Will try to increase power for the next shot. |
| Jun 13 2007 01:55:05:130PM | 1070613017 | Greg Wallace | Several good retries but kept tripping. Cell access to add an attenuator to waveguide 13 top and bottom. |
| Jun 13 2007 02:05:17:613PM | 1070613018 | Greg Wallace | Pulse ran clean until filament fault shut off the HV. Next shot will increase power. |
| Jun 13 2007 02:27:57:800PM | 1070613019 | Greg Wallace | Many trips, but no particular channel is clearly worse than others. Will retry same shot again. |
| Jun 13 2007 02:45:18:440PM | 1070613020 | Greg Wallace | First half of pulse looked good, then tripped due to arcing in waveguide 14? Next shot will be 60 degree phasing. |
| Jun 13 2007 02:49:48:143PM | 1070613021 | Greg Wallace | 60 degree phasing. Early trip and many retries but nothing stuck. Problem seems to be with 23Top. Will try changing phase on klystron 12. |
| Jun 13 2007 03:06:21:003PM | 1070613022 | Greg Wallace | More trips. Cell access to de-sensitize reflected signals on 23 Top. Next shot will repeat. |
| Jun 13 2007 03:51:18:770PM | 1070613023 | Greg Wallace | Tripped and did not come back on after ramp. Cell access to add some more attenuators on waveguides 9 and 23. |
| Jun 13 2007 04:08:02:160PM | 1070613024 | Greg Wallace | More trips. One more try to increase power by turning down klystron 5 to 80kW. |
| Jun 13 2007 04:12:53:550PM | 1070613025 | Greg Wallace | More trips again. Changing phase shifters to 0 degrees and running 120 degree approximate phasing to simulate 60 degree phasing. Will run first half in co current, second half counter current. |
| Jun 13 2007 04:39:01:427PM | 1070613026 | Greg Wallace | Early disruption. |
| Jun 13 2007 04:57:35:847PM | 1070613027 | Greg Wallace | Trip on 6T seems to be the problem. Next shot will increase power from klystron 3 to avoid trips. |
| Jun 13 2007 05:04:52:347PM | 1070613028 | Greg Wallace | 6T high reflection still the problem. Last shot of the day. |
