MP485: "H-Mode Density Control and Pedestal Response to Cryopumping"

This run will attempt to combine H-mode operation with strong pumping,
with the goal of documenting H-mode density control and pedestal
profile response. Edge TS will be the chief edge profile diagnostic,
but we will also be looking for Ti and rotation data from CXRS.

We will begin with scans of SSEP to regulate discharge pumping speeds,
and compare impact of cryopump on L-modes and H-modes as the topology
is varied from LSN to USN. If time allows, we will then explore
pumping in H-modes with static topology, with (slightly) LSN and USN
discharges.

Overnight boronization is required, with vertical field. Based on the
results from 1070612, a dwell position of 80cm is requested.
Boronization is to end at 05:00, in order to allow time for ICRF
transmitter fuses to be replaced. Following this, ECDC should be run
in He for 1--2 hours.

Requested systems:
*Cryopump available
*Enable NINJA with 10psi D2, for diagnostic gas puffing.
*DNB request: at least 6A, 30/15ms ON/OFF, starting at 0.5s.
*ICRF request: 2.5MW flat, 0.7--1.3s


A. SSEP scans to regulate pumping

Load from shot 1070601030, 5.4T, 1MA, L-mode target nl04=9e19. Turn off
gas puff at 0.6s.
Program SSEP to begin at -3mm and scan up to +5mm, from t=0.7s to
0.9s. Fix right gap at 1.2cm, left gap at 1.2cm. Run the following
sequence:

1. Ohmic, with pump warm. Look for change in neutral pressures
top/bottom to help "calibrate" EFIT-reported SSEP.
2. Ohmic, with pump cold. Observe pump-out for comparison with the
H-mode case.
3. With ICRF, pump warm. We are looking for a sustained H-mode as
the plasma transitions from LSN-->DN-->USN, for systematic
comparison with the pumped version.
4. With ICRF, pump cold. Document pedestal response, H-mode
pumpout. Request ICRF power of 3MW if necessary.

Repeat steps 1--4 at (0.8MA, nl04=7e19) and (0.6MA, nl04=5e19) and,
if time is ample, perhaps 1.2MA and/or 0.4MA.

B. H-mode pump-out in static magnetic geometry

1. Load from shot 1070601023: 5.4T, 1MA, L-mode target nl04=9e19.
SSEP fixed at -3mm. Hold right gap at 1.2cm, left gap at 1.2cm.
Obtain ICRF-heated H-mode with pump warm, then with pump
cold. Repeat at (0.8MA, nl04=7e19) and (0.6MA, nl04=5e19)

2. Load from shot 1070601031: 5.4T, 1MA, L-mode target nl04=9e19. Do NOT
turn off gas puff at 0.6s. Hold right gap at 1.2cm, left gap at
1.2cm. Raise ICRF to maximum available to obtain USN H-modes with
pump warm, then with pump cold. Repeat at (0.8MA, nl04=7e19) and
(0.6MA, nl04=5e19).

This run was an attempt to combine H-mode operation with strong
pumping, with the goal of documenting H-mode density control and
pedestal profile response. Because the upper chamber cryopump is most
effective in nearly double null (DN) or upper single null (USN)
geometry, we wanted to obtain H-modes in these topologies and compare
them systematically in pumped and unpumped cases.

We began by pursuing scans of SSEP to regulate discharge pumping
speeds, which also allowed us to start the H-mode in a discharge
biased slightly LSN, where the H-mode power threshold is low, and in
which steady EDA H-modes are more the norm. Shots were to be run at a
range of plasma current, with an H-mode maintained across the sweep
through balanced DN. It took some time to established a suitable
recipe for getting the desired SSEP trace, while maintaining a
suitable amount of non-private flux on the pumping slots. At the same
time, we had problems running 1MA shots and keeping coil currents
below limits. We eventually got a decent collection of shots at 800kA
(5--12) and 600 kA (13--19) both with and without ICRF, and with and
without pumping. We also were able to obtain pumped and unpumped
H-modes at 1MA, albeit with disruptions in flattop.

Lower divertor pump-out and global density drop was generally observed
upon transition to slightly USN geometry with the pump on. However, a
similar drop in H-mode density was observed even with the pump at N2
temperature (e.g. shot 9). This was reflected in the pedestal density,
and resulted in a collisionality drop very similar to that seen in the
pumped case. Effects on pedestal collisionality due to pumping alone
are subtle at best, and will require some time to tease out. However,
there were clear indications of pumping on the SOL plasma, as upper
divertor probes and the midplane gauge both saw the pressure drop by a
factor of about two in pumped vs. unpumped cases. In fact, shots
13--17 provided strong indications that ICRF performance could be
improved by maintaining wall pressure below empirical neutral pressure
limits experienced by the individual antennas.

Shots 24--30 were attempts to generate H-modes in a static USN
topology. Almost 3MW was required to do this, as expected. As in our
prior experience, USN H-modes are less collisional than their LSN
counterparts. USN shots at 1MA demonstrated that pumping could be used
to bring down the pedestal density in H-mode (compare the unpumped 24
with the pumped 26,27). We tried for steadier H-modes at 800kA, but
were stopped by a mysterious power supply problem that manifested
itself on 29,30. We officially terminated the run plan at 4:45. Based
on the initial observations, it would appear that substantial density
pump-out in H-mode will only occur in solidly USN discharges. The
challenge of making those H-modes steady, such that they survive long
enough to allow pumping to have an effect, remains.

A note about plasma performance: It was quite good on many of these
shots. With the combination of a fresh, well-optimized boronization
and DN/USN geometries, we obtained high Te,PED (in some cases, near a
keV) and very low collisionality. H-factors were often 1.7 or
greater. As we pushed collisionality lower, increasingly peaked
density profiles were observed.

A very decent post-boronization run. We explored H-Modes with SSEP scans (from slightly lower to slightly upper null), as well as solidly SNU, with and without cryopumping. Shots at 1 MA were essentially ELM-free, .8MA and .6 MA had EDA. There was ~3 MW ICRF on many shots.

Many of the SSEP sweep shots had disruptions early in ramp-down (including the shot that we loaded from). This needs some wirehead optimization.

We had two duds today that apparently resulted from very low pressure at t=0, in spite of what should have been sufficient prefill puffs; it appeared the valve did not function properly. There was a third dud, resulting from too small a programmed prefill puff with the cryopump cold; this may have been due to physop error, although I was pretty sure I had made the correct programming change, and did load.

We also had 3 post-disruption fizzles (all with the cryopump warmed to liquid nitrogen temperature).

The last 2 shots suffered early disruptions, and the PF breaker pulled. It looks like the power supply problem caused the disruptions; the engineers are investigating.
