1070615 SL_PLAN. MP491 MSE Calibrations SL : Steve Scott, Jinseok Ko PO : Ron Parker Executive summary A. Optimization of torus gas pressure for beam-into-gas calibration : 2 shot B. Standard beam-into-gas calibration : 4 shot C. Investigation on time variation in pitch angle : 1 shot D. Beam-into-plasma calibration with Ip ramp : 2 or 4 shots + 2 'setup' shots E. Beam-into-plasma calibration with plasma sweeping : maximum allowable trial shots ~ 7 F. Beam-into-plasma reproducibility test : 1 or 2 shots G. Beam-into-gas reproducibility test : 1 shot H. MSE spectrum (filter) scan : 5 shots Total expected number of shots: 13 He4 gas shots + 12 ~ 15 D2 plasma shots A. Optimization of torus gas pressure for beam-into-gas calibration : 2 shot This is the torus pressure scan within a shot with a constant pitch angle to find an optimized torus pressure that can minimize secondary-beam-neutral effect. The torus pressure found in these shots will be used in the folloing beam-into-gas shots. After the shot, pitch angle vs pressure plot is investigated. Hopefully, we will find a largest pressure that maintains the pitch angle constant. Standard beam-into-gas calibration : 4 shot Using the optimized torus pressure (p_opt) found in Step A1, 4 different combinations of EF3 + EF4 are used to have the calibration data. Gas: He4 (""p_opt"" mTorr) DNB: 0.1 - 1.5 sec flattop BT : constant 5.4 T during DNB flattop (0.1 - 1.5 sec) B1: reference 1070529025 (but not the same) EF3: constant 0 kA till 0.2 sec increase to 10 kA till 1.5 sec EF4: constant 0 kA during the entire shot B2: EF3: constant 0 kA till 0.2 sec increase to 10 kA till 1.1 sec constant 10 kA from 1.1 - 1.3 sec decrease to 8 kA till 1.5 sec EF4: constant 4 kA from 0.1 - 1.5 sec B3: reference 1070529012 (exact) EF3: constant 0 kA till 0.25 sec increase to 6 kA till 0.65 sec constant 6 kA from 0.65 - 0.9 sec increase to 10 kA till 1.3 sec constant 10 kA from 1.3 - 1.5 sec EF4: constant 4 kA from 0.1 - 1.5 sec B4: EF3: constant 0 kA during the entire shot EF4: constatn 0 kA till 0.2 sec increase to -4 kA till 1.1 sec constant -4 kA from 1.1 - 1.3 sec descrese to -3 kA till 1.5 sec C. Investigation on time variation in pitch angle : 1 shot This addresses the time variation in the measured pitch angle within a shot. We have a clean, constant pitch angle during the entire shot and observe any time variation. Gas: He4 (""p_opt"" mTorr) DNB: 0.1 - 1.5 sec flattop BT : constant 5.4 T during DNB flattop (0.1 - 1.5 sec) EF3: constant 8 kA during the DNB flattop* EF4: constant 0 kA during the DNB flattop *EF3 flattop should start at least 0.3 sec before the DNB-On time D. Beam-into-plasma calibration with Ip ramp : 2 or 4 shots + 2 'setup' shots Maintaining the plasma shape, only the Ip ramps down during a shot. Using the EFIT-calculated pitch angle at the edge channel, the MSE edge channel is calibrated. Two scenerios are considered. D1: large Ip ramp in a single shot. If D1 is not successful, D2: two small Ip ramps in two seperate shots Gas: Deuterium plasma (target Nel = 0.6 - 0.7e20) DNB: 0.4 - 1.9 sec modulated as on/off = 60/40 msec BT : constant 5.4 T during DNB (0.4 - 1.9 sec) No ICRF/LHCD D1: reference 1060316014 Ip: 1.1 MA @ 0.7 sec 0.25 MA @ 1.8 sec Repeat D1 (total number of shots will be 2 + 2 setup shots = 4 shots) D2: D2a: reference 1060316014 Ip: 1.1 MA @ 0.7 sec 0.45 MA @ 1.8 sec D2b: reference 1070405012 Ip: 0.7 MA @ 0.5 sec 0.25 MA @ 1.8 sec Repeat D2a and D2b (total number of shots will be 4 + 2 setup shots = 6 shots) E. Beam-into-plasma calibration with plasma sweeping : maximum allowable trial shots ~ 7 The plasma edge is swept past each of the MSE channel locations by ramping the plasma's major and minor radius. Unlike the Ip-ramp plasma calibration, this provides the calibration data for inner channels. Many setup shots may be required. After we try 7 shots, not being successful, we will stop this test and go to the next one. Beam-into-plasma reproducibility test : 1 or 2 shots This addresses a rather large time scale reproducibility issue for beam-into-plasma shots. Repeat D1 if D1 is successful (1 shot ) Repeat D2 if D2 is successful (2 shots) G. Beam-into-gas reproducibility test : 1 shot This addresses a rather large time scale reproducibility issue for beam-into-gas shots. Repeat B1 H. | 1070615 SL_SUMMARY. MP491 MSE Calibrations SL : Steve Scott, Jinseok Ko PO : Ron Parker, Joe Snipes Executive summary Beam-into-gas calibrations: Still confused with gas pressure dependence. Reproducibility is not good in general. Beam-into-plasma calibrations: Good Ip ramp calibration Reproducibility is not that bad. A. Optimization of torus gas pressure for beam-into-gas calibration - planned 2 shots - took 5 shots (including 2 OH test shots and 1 no-beam shot) - so actually 2 shots : 1070615003, 1076015005 - hard to find a consistent trend between the measured pitch angle and the torus pressure. We temporarily chose 0.15 mTorr as 'p_opt'. B. Standard beam-into-gas calibration - planned 4 shots - took 5 shots (first B1 had too high pressure and also EF3 didn't reach 10kA) : 1070615006 ~ 1070615010 - got good beam-into-gas calibration data. - still, significant shot-to-shot variations C. Investigation on time variation in pitch angle : - planned 1 shot - took 1 shot: 1070615011 - the within-shot variation in pitch angle is very weired. D. Beam-into-plasma calibration with Ip ramp - planned 4 or 6 shots - took 12 shots 5 disruptions : 1070615012, 014, 017, 018, 021 4 fizzles : 1070615013, 015, 018, 022 1 shot for D1 : Ip 1 MA @ 1 sec -> 0.4 MA @ 2.3 sec (1076015022) 2 shots for D2b : Ip 0.8 MA @ 1 sec -> 0.1 MA @ 1.9 sec (1070615019, 020) - really good beam-into-plasma calibration data - in shot 22, we had 'ohmic-driven' H-mode. Priceless shot - the main cause of the disruption turns to be a low density (lock mode) E. Beam-into-plasma calibration with plasma sweeping - planned 7 shots - not done this time F. Beam-into-plasma reproducibility test - planned 1 or 2 shots - took 1 shot : 1070615024 - shot 20 was reloaded. - measured pitch angle reproducibility is good. G. Beam-into-gas reproducibility test - planned 1 shot - took 1 shot : 1070615025 H. MSE spectrum (filter) scan - planned 5 shots - took 2 shots : 1076015026, 027 - but we forgot to ask Physop to increase the torus pressure from 0.15 mTorr to 0.75 mTorr - also forgot to increase APD high voltage. Effectively no signal for MSE. - therefore, we didn't get any from the last three shots |

| I was not Physop for the first half of the run, but here is the summary for shots 19 through 27. There were 5 plasma shots and one fizzle following a disruption. Then, the last three shots were without plasma for beam into gas. Shot 23 was a special long pulse discharge ramping down from 1.1 MA, intending to go to zero at 3 s, but it disrupted at 2.3 s. Still, it was a sufficiently long ramp to get reasonably good MSE data. The A-coils has been left disabled throughout the day until shot 22 even though they were requested to be enabled. Shot 21 had a 1.1 MA disruption due to a locked mode at low density with no A-coil current. Otherwise, the machine ran pretty well for the requested conditions. | Jun 15 2007 11:18:56:883AM | 1070615009 | Ron Parker | Shot 9 was OK. Move on to shot B4. |
| Jun 15 2007 11:52:13:497AM | 1070615010 | Ron Parker | Shot 10 was good for beam into gas. |
| Jun 15 2007 11:53:04:007AM | 1070615011 | Ron Parker | Shot 11 completes beam into gas (for now). |
| Jun 15 2007 12:16:50:687PM | 1070615011 | Ron Parker | Next shot will be plasma attempt. |
| Jun 15 2007 12:36:26:060PM | 1070615012 | Ron Parker | Shot 12 disrupted. |
| Jun 15 2007 12:50:03:320PM | 1070615013 | Ron Parker | Shot 13 fizzled. |
| Jun 15 2007 12:56:38:687PM | 1070615014 | Ron Parker | Shot disrupted. Next will likely fizzle.
We'll set up for a "normal" 800 kA shot. |
| Jun 15 2007 01:33:47:337PM | 1070615015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 fizzled. |
| Jun 15 2007 01:33:10:320PM | 1070615016 | Ron Parker | Shot 16 was a normal 800 kA low n shot. Now we'll try to ramp the current down. |
| Jun 15 2007 01:34:15:477PM | 1070615016 | Ron Parker | Delay while power supply problem is investigated. |
| Jun 15 2007 01:47:56:020PM | 1070615017 | Ron Parker | Shot 17 disrupted at 0.4 s
Next: fizzle? |
| Jun 15 2007 01:57:30:103PM | 1070615018 | Ron Parker | Fizzle, as usual after disruption. |
| Jun 15 2007 02:20:27:270PM | 1070615020 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 20: Joe Snipes taking over for Ron Parker as physop for the remainder of the run. Repeat. Good shot. |
| Jun 15 2007 03:29:36:070PM | 1070615021 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 21: Extended TF flattop out to 3.0 s and extended all waveforms and wires out to 3 s as well. TF invert time set to 3.0 s. Raised Ip to 1.1 MA arriving at 0.7 s and remaining there until 1.0 s to begin the rampdown. Disrupted at 1.0 s apparently due to a locked mode that started at 0.8 s. |
| Jun 15 2007 03:33:16:823PM | 1070615022 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 22: It turns out the A-coils have not been enabled all day. They should now be enabled for this shot. Also raised nl04 to 7 x 10^19 m-2. Fizzle! |
| Jun 15 2007 03:53:42:870PM | 1070615023 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 23: Another attempt to get the long pulse ramp down with a 3 s TF flattop. Got most of the long pulse. Disrupted at 2.3 s. Curious Ohmic H-mode from 1.71 s to 1.86 s with only 0.75 MA. |
| Jun 15 2007 04:07:36:723PM | 1070615024 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 24: Reloaded shot 1070615020 and increased nl04 to 6 x 10^19 m^-2. Good shot. |
| Jun 15 2007 04:39:11:357PM | 1070615025 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 25: Going back to beam into gas shots. Copied shot 1070615007 with EF3 but no EF4. Opened breaker to EF4 to ensure no induced current. TF also on at 150 kA. |
| Jun 15 2007 04:55:21:963PM | 1070615026 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 26: Now running EF3, EF4, and TF. TF should ramp from 2.8 T at 0.2 s to 4.2 T at 1.4 s. EF3 current should ramp from 1.81 kA at 0.2 s to 5.18 kA at 1.4 s. EF4 should be constant at 3 kA from 0.1 s to 1.5 s during the DNB pulse. |
| Jun 15 2007 04:59:43:797PM | 1070615027 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 27: Now running EF3, EF4, and TF. TF should ramp from 4.9 T at 0.2 s to 6.2 T at 1.4 s. EF3 current should ramp from 6.86 kA at 0.2 s to 10 kA at 1.4 s. EF4 should be constant at 3 kA from 0.1 s to 1.5 s during the DNB pulse. |
