| Start with shot 1070613016.
Set launcher to 1.5mm behind limiter and set phase shifters to 60deg ideal current drive direction. LH will fire from 800ms to 1300ms. Klystron 5 will be turned off completely and the CPS bypassed on associated channels. We may later disable klystrons 7 and/or 12. We will be staying at 5.4T all day for MSE. Start with ~400kW of LH power at 60 degree ideal phasing. Check to make sure the CPS is working correctly and we are not arcing in the waveguides. Increase power to 600kW then 800+kW. We will be looking for clean (no/minimal trips) LH pulses from .8-1.3s. It will require some tweaking to the drive level of the individual klystrons to increase the power level. Once "reliable" operation at net power greater than 700kW is achieved, add ICRF from J and E at 1MW each. This may require a cell access to add some attenuators to the protection system. If plasma goes into H-mode and density rises dramatically, try switching to upper null. Starting upper null shot would be 1070607008. Cell Access to change phase shifters to 0 degrees. Run 500ms shots with the first half in co-current-drive and the second half in counter-current-drive, 120 degree approximate phasing in both cases, at the maximum power level we can achieve without too many trips. This should give an n|| spectrum similar to 60 degree ideal phasing, but with a slightly wider spectral peak. We would like to see some changes with MSE between the co- and counter-current-drive segments. We expect that getting the system to run in this configuration will be a bit tricky, especially since we have no experience running higher power in counter-current-drive configuration. |

| All shots today were at 60 degree phasing (n||=1.5). The accessibility limit at
this phasing and 5.4T is ~6e19 m^-3. First few shots went well getting full length pulses up to 575kW. Interestingly pickup on the spectrum analyzer was much higher than normal by nearly 30dB. Put in 30dB of attenuators to protect the analyzer from damage after shot 3. Many attempts were made but could not get net powers above 600kW to run clean. Arcing was a problem in several waveguides on klystrons 2, 4, and 11. At this point, 6 of the 12 klystrons must run with zero or reduced (below 100kW) power. After failing to increase net power above 600kW, some investigation of LH & ICRF was tried. 1MW each from J and E did not have deleterious effect on LH coupling, but rise in density due to ICRF did kill the current drive effect. This is probably because the density rose to inaccessible levels in the core region, even taking n|| up-shift into account. With 2MW of ICRF these plasmas did not go into H-mode due to the "low" core density. 90 degree phasing will definately be required for future ICRF & LH operation, especially into H-mode. |

Physics Operator Summary for Tuesday, June 19, 2007
MP#473 LH commissioning
SL: Wallace
PO: Wolfe
EO: Cochran, Parkin, Byford
This was not a very exciting run from the physics operator's perspective.
We stayed in LSN with essentially the same shape all day,
modified from the starting shot (based on 1070613016) only by increasing
RXU by 1cm for shot#2 to equalize the probe readings at the top and
bottom of the LH grill. The nominal outer gap was zero according
to EFIT, which seems to actually be a couple of mm.
Shots #9,12, and 16 were at 1MA, all the rest were 800kA.
I spent the first half of the day chasing the startup to try
to get rid of early runaways, without a lot of success. A number of
these early runaway shots also had minor disruptions between 0.1 and 0.2
seconds which dumped the runaways and also took a chunk out of the current.
These were presumably due to MHD activity associated with the runaway
beam. I also did some adjusting of the initial current in seg2 and the
CLEARIN and ZCUR ramps in the 0.1 to 0.3 sec interval, which may have
helped.
Shots#1-16 had only LH, and #17-26 were combined LH and ICRF.
Aside from the runaways, the main problem today was post-disruption
fizzles after early rampdown disruptions on 9 and 12. In the course of
trying to get past these I ended up undoing most of the startup tweaks
I had made earlier, including 20 A on EF4 and greatly increased pg4
puff (up to 27msec). The main symptom on in the fizzles was high CIII
level (over 0.01) and very low current. The rampdown disruption was fixed
at shot#16 by some small adjustments to the ramps on RXU and ZXL.
Most of the day we used the density programming of 1070613016, which
had an initial value of 5e19 and then dropped to 3.5e19 at 0.5sec.
On the next to last shot #25 we removed the early rise and programmed
3.5e19 with no additional pg3 in segment 2, and got a somewhat lower
density, though it still came up during the combined LH and ICRF. Since
some gas was still being demanded in the early phase of this shot, for the
last shot #26 I changed the program demand from 3.5 to 2e19. This resulted
in a locked mode at 0.5 sec and eventually a disruption at ~1sec,
despite using standard feedback on the A-coils.
We had several power room accesses for the engineers to investigate
a sharing problem among the TF cabinets. This problem could be related
to the fiber optic links (AFOLs) in the supply, but still hasn't been
resolved.
Shot#13 was a no-power shot due to an alternator spin down (trip to
speed 1), which was blamed on a phantom C-Mod fault signal received at
the alternator, for no apparent reason.

| Jun 19 2007 05:04:24:877PM | 1070619001 | Greg Wallace | Good shot. One trip and successful retry at 400kW net. ~.3V reduction in Vloop. Density on the top row is a bit low as see on the LH probes and the top row REFCO. Next shot will move upper x-point out radially by 1cm and increase the LH power to 100kW per klystron, keeping klystron 11 at 75kW.
Netpow=380kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:04:47:753PM | 1070619002 | Greg Wallace | Another clean shot. No trips. Netpow around 475kW and refco around 25% overall. Reflections still a bit high on the top row but density looks more even between top and bottom. Vloop decreased by 0.4-0.5V. Next shot will increase klystron power to 125kW each except #11.
Netpow=480kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:05:13:207PM | 1070619003 | Greg Wallace | Added 30dB of attenuation to the spectrum analyzer due to abnormally high fundamental frequency level.
Short pulse then tripped out and retry was not successful. Next shot will turn down power on klystron 4. Netpow=610kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:05:36:330PM | 1070619004 | Greg Wallace | Another full length shot. ~.4V reduction in Vloop at 575kW. Next shot will increase power to 150kW per klystron except #4.
Netpow=560kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:05:57:940PM | 1070619005 | Greg Wallace | Short pulse tripped out and did not retry successfully. Appears to be an arc between the IDC and JGDC in klystron 2. Next shot will decrease power in klystron 2 and keep others same.
Netpow=680kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:06:33:067PM | 1070619006 | Greg Wallace | Many trips. Next shot will increase the length of the ramp and decrease the power from klystron 2.
Netpow=670kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:06:54:550PM | 1070619007 | Greg Wallace | Looks like there might be some arcing in the jungle gym between the IDC and JGDC for klystron 7, specifically the problem appears to be in waveguide 13.
Next shot will try turning klystrons down to 130kW from 150kW. Netpow=650kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:07:17:600PM | 1070619008 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran nearly full length. 0.5V steady reduction in Vloop at 575kW net power. Density looks good for all LH probes. Next shot will increase Ip to 1MA.
Netpow=560kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:07:42:083PM | 1070619009 | Greg Wallace | Many trips. Looks like arcing in the jungle gym on RINT 7.
Netpow=630kW |
| Jun 19 2007 01:16:12:040PM | 1070619010 | Greg Wallace | Post-disruption fizzle. Cell access to add attenuator on RINT4 diode leg. |
| Jun 19 2007 12:10:24:850PM | 1070619011 | Greg Wallace | Another fizzle. |
| Jun 19 2007 05:08:27:160PM | 1070619012 | Greg Wallace | Another disruption at 1.65s. LH tripped out early and did not come back. Attenuator was accidentally put on FINT, not RINT! This made the problem worse. Cell access to fix the problem.
Netpow=500kW |
| Jun 19 2007 01:08:09:067PM | 1070619013 | Greg Wallace | No power shot. |
| Jun 19 2007 01:08:16:580PM | 1070619014 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jun 19 2007 01:27:24:487PM | 1070619015 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Jun 19 2007 05:10:46:537PM | 1070619016 | Greg Wallace | Tripping appears to be caused by waveguide 7T. Next shot will bring plasma current down to 800kA and add 1MW of ICRF from J at .7s to 1.4s. Perhaps the higher temperature will help with more effecient current drive.
Netpow=640kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:11:08:383PM | 1070619017 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot at 450kW LH and 900kW ICRF from J. Not much current drive. Next shot will add .5MW from E and turn up the LH power a bit.
Netpow=450kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:11:31:617PM | 1070619018 | Greg Wallace | LH tripped out after 85ms. 1.5MW of ICRF doesn't seem to be a problem. Next shot will decrease LH power slightly.
Netpow=500kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:11:50:290PM | 1070619019 | Greg Wallace | Many trips, with one successful retry. Net power made it up to 550kW. Looks like arcing in waveguide 6 or 7. Will turn down LH power slightly.
Netpow=550 |
| Jun 19 2007 05:12:12:523PM | 1070619020 | Greg Wallace | More trips. The problem appears to be high intrinsic reflection in waveguide 7bottom. This could be an "end waveguide" effect since klystron 5 is shut off completely. Next shot will increase phase on klystron 4 by 10 degrees to mitigate the end effect.
Netpow=500kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:12:36:710PM | 1070619021 | Greg Wallace | Changing phase +10 degrees didn't help. Next shot will try -10 degrees compared to shot 20.
Netpow=310kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:12:58:540PM | 1070619022 | Greg Wallace | Somewhat better, but still high reflections on waveguide 7. Next shot will decrease power on klystron 3 to reduce reflected power in waveguide 7.
Netpow=500kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:13:25:773PM | 1070619023 | Greg Wallace | Pulse was clean until almost the end of the pulse. Net power of about 475kW with 1.4MW of ICRF from E and J. Next shot will increase power to 1MW from E.
Netpow=470kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:14:01:993PM | 1070619024 | Greg Wallace | Nearly clean LH pulse again with 2MW of ICRF. Very little sign of current drive, possibly due to higher line averaged density. 60 degree phasing will not be accessabile at this core density. Next shot will *try* to decrease density a bit.
Netpow=475kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:14:26:680PM | 1070619025 | Greg Wallace | LH ran well, although density still was a bit high for accessability. Next shot will try to decrease the density a bit more.
Netpow=475kW |
| Jun 19 2007 05:14:47:387PM | 1070619026 | Greg Wallace | Last shot of the day. LH tripped out and plasma disrupted at 1s.
Netpow=400kW |

| Jun 19 2007 07:46:39:210AM | Steve Wolfe | Load from starting shot 1070613016 (per SL email) This is an 800kA LSN with nl04 programmed to 3.5e19 after 0.5sec. For reasons unknown to me, the nl04 gain starts at 9 at -2 sec, then drops to 8 at 0.2sec; also, there is a 50V pg3 puff in seg2 dropping off by 0.5sec. Maybe supposed to help with runaways or slowing current rise? Leave it for now. There's a non-zero point on wire 12 (zero12) in seg2. Probably left over from a timestamp issue patch. Reset to zero. Startup is from before we started using the Int gain on oh1 and I reprogrammed the current ramp on OH2. That's ok as long as the supplies behave. RCur=1000, Br0=-.003, pg4=20msec. All ok as a starting point. Move seg2 integrator C gate from 0.3 to 0.2sec Load at 19-Jun-2007 07:46:24.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done | |
| Jun 19 2007 08:28:32:037AM | Steve Wolfe | Since we may be going to upper null later in the day, go ahead and import seg3 from 1070607008 as specified in SL_PLAN This is 1MA UN at higher density (6e19) than starting condition. Check the wires and load it (seg2 still on, seg3 off) Load at 19-Jun-2007 08:28:21.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done | |
| Jun 19 2007 08:33:23:590AM | Steve Wolfe | Requested EO to change C-coil start time from 0.3sec to 0.2sec | |
| Jun 19 2007 09:18:17:903AM | 1070619001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: Supposed to be like 1070613016 (LSN, 800kA, nl04=3.5e19,very small outer gap) for LH (start at 0.8sec plasma with runaways starting at 0.8sec. Magnetics warnings on f10 and bp11_bc (11mV), probably ok. Looks ok. Nothing obviously broken. breakdown looks ok. LH net power=400kW, 1 dropout. Next: Move RXU out to improve density at top of grill |
| Jun 19 2007 09:32:38:540AM | 1070619002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: Move RXU out from 0.035 to 0.045 to increase density near top of grill. plasma, some early runaways, but no startup bounce; dumps at ~0.23sec breakdown is a bit late at 6.8msec. Still seeing ~11mT baseline offset on bp11 (also f10 and f11 offsets) but I think its because of the long TF tail. Greg likes the density match across the grill better this time. Next: Increase seg1 IC_EF4U by 10A |
| Jun 19 2007 09:51:46:367AM | 1070619003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: Increase seg1 IC_EF4U from -1335 to -1325 to tweak breakdown, early runaways. If this doesn't help, try increasing pg4 next time. plasma, still with early runaways. breakdown time is back to 5.8ms, no obvious bounce. Bz0 still looks negative. LH up to 600kW, but lots of trips after the first 100ms. Next: increase pg4 by 3ms |
| Jun 19 2007 10:26:01:847AM | 1070619004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: increase pg4 from 20 to 23ms Cell access before this shot to change an attenuator on LH plasma, still some early runaways, but better. breakdown looks ok. Still a dump and some MHD around .2sec. ICRF fired into dummy load, but it is showing up on RF Netpower. EFIT is showing decreasing Wmhd during the LH again, although density is nearly flat and Te is increasing a little (from TS). I need to see about tweaking the EFIT again. This shot is showing error in betap for almost the whole shot, even before the LH, so it may be hopeless. Next: Raise Pg4 by another 2ms |
| Jun 19 2007 10:33:56:023AM | 1070619005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: increase pg4 from 23 to 25ms plasma, still some early runaways. Looks like LH may have tripped out early. Next: Push IC_EF4U another 10A |
| Jun 19 2007 10:51:28:240AM | 1070619006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6:IC_EF4U from -1325 to -1315 plasma, still not getting rid of the early runaways! This one has a big bite out of the current at the dump around .15sec. LH still tripping. Next: raise pg4 one more time. |
| Jun 19 2007 11:07:32:223AM | 1070619007 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: raise pg4 from 25 to 27ms, pushing my luck? plasma still with runaways, still a small bite in Ip at .19sec this time. LH still faulting after 1sec. Next: try increasing the seg1 pg3 puff, |
| Jun 19 2007 11:28:45:350AM | 1070619008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#8: raise seg1 pg3 puff from 40 to 60ms. Still trying to get rid of runaways and fix the current rise internal disruption. plasma, and I think the runaways are down! However, there is an even bigger bite out of the current with a mini-disruption at 0.17sec. Almost lost it vertically then. LH stays on better this time, at lower power. Next: Go to 1MA, otherwise same. |
| Jun 19 2007 11:37:41:997AM | 1070619009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: Go to 1MA, otherwise same. I was going to try moving it off the limiter earlier, but see what this does first. plasma disrupted at 1.7sec, still has the bad bite in current at 0.2sec. Next: decrease Ip program at 0.1sec from 600ka to 520kA |
| Jun 19 2007 11:50:43:663AM | 1070619010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: decrease Ip program at 0.1sec from 600ka to 520kA leave rcur out longer in rampdown. decrease first positive clearin point from .005 to .002, start clearin ramp earlier. No seg 1 changes, despite the late disruption. Got a fizzle. should have dropped the gas, I guess, but the current rise isn't terrible. Drop it 2ms for next shot anyway. |
| Jun 19 2007 12:13:41:320PM | 1070619011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: pg4 from 27 to 25msec. Carryover from #10: decrease Ip program at 0.1sec from 600ka to 520kA leave rcur out longer in rampdown. decrease first positive clearin point from .005 to .002, start clearin ramp earlier. New for #11: Delay zcur drop (was at -.008 at t=0.1, discontinuous with seg1) Cell access for attenuator change on LH again before this shot. Result: fizzle. Actually made it to 65ka and 25msec. CIII and Halpha rise smoothly. Next: drop pg4 back to 22msec |
| Jun 19 2007 12:26:26:207PM | 1070619012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: pg4 from 25 to 22msec. EF4 from -1315 to -1325. Carryover from #10: decrease Ip program at 0.1sec from 600ka to 520kA leave rcur out longer in rampdown. decrease first positive clearin point from .005 to .002, start clearin ramp earlier. New for #11: Delay zcur drop (was at -.008 at t=0.1, discontinuous with seg1) Result: plasma, disrupts in rampdown again, around 1.63sec No bite out of current, no early runaways. LH faulted again, runaways are saturated after 1 sec. Seems to gave been an error in where the attenuator got put. Next: Drop pg4 to 18msec, see if I can figure out why it's disrupting. |
| Jun 19 2007 12:50:41:973PM | 1070619013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Drop pg4 from 22 to 18msec, reduce rampin of RXU in rampdown, also slow ZXL rise in rampdown Cell access for changing attenuator, also power room access to deal with noise issue in TF cabinet. No power shot - Alternator problem |
| Jun 19 2007 01:13:21:787PM | 1070619014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Delay while alternator spins back up from 1480rpm. It apparently tripped down due to a C-Mod fault; don't know where that came from yet. As on #13: pg4 from 22 to 18msec, reduce rampin of RXU in rampdown, also slow ZXL rise in rampdown Fizzle. Maybe dropped pg4 too much? Early breakdown at 5.0msec but CIII level is high. Hardly any gas current Next: PG4 to 20ms |
| Jun 19 2007 01:30:24:537PM | 1070619015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: PG4 to from 18 to 20msec. Power room access to deal with continuing noise in TF#1 and 2. Theyt reseated the fibers and power cycled. Another fizzle. Looks worse. Next: EF4 to -1335, getting back to where it was on shot#1. |
| Jun 19 2007 01:46:29:737PM | 1070619016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: EF4 from -1325 to -1335, getting back to where it was on shot#1. If this doesn't work, maybe try ecdc. plasma full length, looks good on tv, no issues in current rise. No early runaways. Slight hesitation in rcur between .01 and .015sec CIII is still high (.006) but better than it was. LH has some faulting, but hanging in there. Next: Add some ICRF |
| Jun 19 2007 02:08:41:517PM | 1070619017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: Back down to 800kA, add ICRF plasma, full length. Startup looks ok, just a hint of early runaways. got an icrf pulse, stays L-mode; LH steady at ~400kW Next: repeat, add icrf from E, increase LH |
| Jun 19 2007 02:22:32:153PM | 1070619018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: No pcs changes Early runaways are back. ICRF looks good at 1.5MW, LH tripping out. Next: Start raising pg4 again |
| Jun 19 2007 03:12:25:480PM | 1070619019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: pg4 from 20 to 22ms power room access for TF again; didn't find anything. plasma. again some early runaways and a dump at .13sec 1.5MW ICRF, LH up to ~550kW, then faulting. |
| Jun 19 2007 03:33:34:167PM | 1070619020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: No pcs changes Trying for slightly lower LH power plasma, some early runaways (again), they're getting worse. ICRF looks ok at 1.5MW, stays in L-mode. LH still tripping. Next: Raise seg1 pg3, see if that will help control the runaways. |
| Jun 19 2007 03:50:07:727PM | 1070619021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Raise seg1 pg3 from 60 to 80, see if that will help control the runaways. LH is going to try to adjust phasing on one channel to improve reflections plasma, early runaways still present, but no obvious dump. BP09_jk gave a 12mT baseline offset this time. Hardly any hards late in pulse, must not have gotten LH? ICRF looks fine at 1.5MW Next: No PCS changes |
| Jun 19 2007 04:05:33:660PM | 1070619022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: No PCS changes, LH will adjust phase the other way. plasma, still some early runaways. LH still faulting. Next: try again |
| Jun 19 2007 04:15:22:200PM | 1070619023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: No PCS changes, LH will tinker with power from one klystron plasma, still with early runaways. Ip/Bz is getting big, but the runaway level is actually a little lower this time. LH ran through this time. Next: Increase ICRF power |
| Jun 19 2007 04:31:50:650PM | 1070619024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: No PCS changes, Increase ICRF power plasma, runaways a little better, marginal H-mode or dithering, but nl04 stays below 5.5e19. ICRF just under 2MW LH stays on, but no appreciable loop voltage drop. Next: Try dropping density earlier in pulse. |
| Jun 19 2007 04:45:14:690PM | 1070619025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25: Get rid of initial higher nl04 and turn off PG3 in seg2 plasma LH stayed on, density still rises during RF pulse. There's still gas coming in until 0.7sec. Next: try for even lower density |
| Jun 19 2007 05:07:31:440PM | 1070619026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Program for 2e19 and flat through pulse. plasma to 1 sec, then disruption. Density went down to 1.7e19. Runaways started at 0.4sec well before the LH or ICRF. This was just a slideaway shot. Locked mode at 0.5sec, with nebar around 3e19/m^3. Very clear on sawteeth and LM loops. This seems to be as low in density as we can get. END OF RUN. |
