Goals:

To measure the effect of non-resonant n=2 error fields on plasma rotation.

Plan:

Reference shot 1070531015, with Ip=800kA, nl_04=1.e20, Bt=5.4T. RF power 3MW or highest reliable from 0.6-1.5sec flat.

A-coil setup: +Dtop +Dbot +Jtop +Jbot (non-standard n=2). B21_PROJ feedback OFF.

Argon puff for HIREX and NINJA D puff for CXRS. DNB for CXRS.

Overnight Boronisation.

Shot plan:

1. Establish steady H-mode with A-coil off. If needed, change density to achieve reliable RF power and steady H-mode without running into problems with locked modes. Observe the rotation evolution after the H-mode transition.

2. Apply a square wave A-coil current (maximum current) when the plasma has reached steady state in H-mode. Leave the A-coil current on until the end of flat-top. If we find that the plasma rotation has reached a steady value during the A-coil phase then we could consider ramping the A-coil current to zero in further shots in order to observe the plasma rotation spin up again.

3. If no effect then go to backup experiment, else start a scan in A-coil current. Take shots in the order 3.0kA, 2.1 kA, 1kA and then take the decision which intermediate values are desirable based on the results found.

4. At some point, reverse the A-coil polarity and repeat the scan. This requires a cell access. Start the scan at the highest value of A-coil current that gave good results in the +A-coil current scan.

Gas setup:

Fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid ENABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
pump out NINJA and backfill with 8 PSI of D2, then enable.

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
ECE, VUV, Z-bolo shutters
Enable DNB gatevalve if requested by DNB operator.

We managed to get a set of three matched shots with +3.7, 0 and -3.7kA in the A-coils in n=2 configuration (shots 9 10 and 11). These shots had reliable 1.8MW of RF power. Unfortunately, very little difference in rotation was observed between the three shots. This was somewhat unexpected due to the ease of braking the rotation on JET with comparable error fields. This needs to be reconciled with NTV theory.

We then changed to a program looking for changes in the locked mode threshold due to the n=2 fields. Shot 16 had -3.7kA A-coil current and shot 17 had 0 A-coil current, but both had locked modes at the same density indicating that the n=2 fields had little effect.

A much better day than yesterday after overnight boronization. The machine ran very well. All plasma attempts were successful with full length plasmas except for shot 2 that disrupted early due to an impurity injection. Shots 1 and 5 were TF only test shots because several fuses had blown early yesterday and we ran with only one cabinet of the TF. The fuses were replaced after shot 4 today. The run was also successful for the physics as a clear negative result was obtained. See the session leader summary for details. The run ended at 3:00 pm for Bob Childs' retirement party. There were 16 plasmas, 2 power supply tests, no fizzles and no duds.

Only got 2MW of RF, but it was steady until 1.2sec and got us into H-mode. A-coil current reached 3.7kA at ~1.1sec. There seems to be a much smaller effect on the rotation than was expected, but there seems to be a change in the hirex_sr data.. We need a full length RF shot to be sure.

Still a drop in RF power at 1sec. There may be some indication from hirex_sr that the rotation decreases steadily after the RF step-down, but it is unclear if this effect is due to the A-coils.

RF step down at 1sec again. Maybe we can get H-mode without the J port. There is the slightest of hints that the rotation starts to increase again after the A-coil is switched off.

Very nice steady 1.8MW RF, which got us into H-mode. There is a steady decrease in rotation velocity from hirex_sr after 0.9sec, with a recovery after the A-coil has been turned off.
