| Session leader plan for 1070622
Session leaders: Amanda Hubbard, Greg Wallace Physics operator: Earl Marmar MP 490: Assessing LHCD in ICRF-Heated L and H-modes :DAY 2 This run follows up on Day 1, 1070607, which consisted of low power coupling studies. Note that following that run, some errors in phase settings were discovered. The main goal of today is to combine LHCD with ~ 2 MW of ICRF, for a few different physics conditions, and document both coupling and current drive. In contrast to Tuesday's run, we will stick with a moderate LH power level, around 500 kW, putting a priority on clear LH traces rather than higher power. ICRF: Will primarily use J-port and E-port, around 1 MW each. For some shots later in the day, will replace E with D-port to document differences. For first shots, ICRF timing 0.7-1.4 s. LHCD: Set up for 90 degree ideal phasing, using latest tables. Suggest setting klystron powers as on 1070619024, which ran clean at 480 kW net coupled. Turn on at 0.8 s-1.3 s (after H-mode formed, in priniciple). CRYOPUMP will be used for some of the run, should be ready for operation by 10 am. OVERNIGHT BORONIZATION is requested. Use settings as on overnight 1070620. Run plan: For each condition, plan to spend a few shots as needed to bring up LHCD power. DNB and MSE are requested, from at least 0.65 s. NINJA disabled to start run, may be used with D2 later. 1) LSN H-mode. Load from 1070607022 -800 kA, 5.5 T, small outer gap, target nel 7e19 m-2. May tweak target ne depending on H-mode density and character, and/or try cryopump. 2) LSN H-mode, 600 kA. Target 6e19 m-2. Should give lower pedestal density. CRYOPUMP on to help J-port. 3) Switch to USN L-mode. 800 kA. Load 1070607012. target 6e19 m-3. ICRF on at 0.9 s. LHCD on at 0.7 s, to give ohmic comparison. May turn Cryopump on if ne rise an issue. For 1-2 shots, try replacing E-port with D-port to document differences in coupling (expect worse R with D) 4) Swept Ssep H-modes. Start with either 600 or 800 kA, depending on LSN results. Load waveforms from eg shot 1070614012. Likely to take some shape development to make gaps suitable for LHCD, which is why this is at the end of the day. But, we expect lower ne H-mode pedestals which could be very good for advanced scnearios. Time permitting, repeat with and without cryopump. |

| Run summary for 1070622
Session leaders: Amanda Hubbard, Greg Wallace Physics operator: Earl Marmar MP 490: Assessing LHCD in ICRF-Heated L and H-modes :DAY 2 This run was only marginally successful, due to engineering difficulties in simulateously running LHCD with ICRF. On many shots, this combination led to failures of the chopper, and thus to disruptions. The problem is not currently understood, and was not seen in a similar run on Tuesday. We did get some discharges with 400 kW LHCD and either J or E-port (ie, 1 MW). At this power level, and 90 degree phasing, LH ran very cleanly and reliably all day. Because of the other issues, we did not spend time pushing up the power so it may have been possible to increase. As planned, the first half of the run (shots 1-13) was LSN, planned to give H-modes although with only 1 MW it was L-mode. For these shots, ICRF was turned on before LHCD. Reflection coefficients were reasonable, in both L and H-modes. But, due to disruption issue, we only got brief H-mode periods (eg shots 5,7,9). Shots 11, 13 had E only plus LHCD,(L-mode) and also disrupted promptly. Shot 5 was LH only. None of these shots had much signature of non-thermals or current drive at this nel and power level. From shot 14 we switched to USN. Disruption issues continues, when LH and E-port were combined. The cryopump was used from shot 18 and helped keep nel constant at nel 6e19 m-2. Shots 17 and 20 had LHCD only, and quite strong non-thermals (~ 2 keV on ECE). Perhaps the most interesting shot of the day was shot 21, which succeeded in combining LHCD and J-port ICRF. Interestingly, the non-thermals DROPPED sharply during the (100 ms) ICRF pulse. This might be related to the D-alpha rise. Shot 14 showed evidence of a similar effect. In summary, we got some useful discharges but by no means completed the run plan . Will need to revisit once machine problems are resolved. There is likely room to raise LH power. |

| This was a tough day.
On many shots with combined ICRF and LH, the EFC power supply shut off in the middle of the shot (with an IOC indication, according to the engineers), leading to a prompt disruption. Various combinations of ICRF antennas, with and without LH were tried. All cases when EFC tripped off had at least LH plus E-port. The one shot (21) with LH plus only J (no D or E) did not have the EFC problem, but J tripped off after only 130 msec. Shot 15 had ICRF into plasma plus LH into dummy load and suffered the same EFC problem. Before shot 18 we started having data system problems, with Pat announcing that the next shot would be "shot 1". After a no-power cycle, we eventually had a second go at shot 18, which worked. Shot 19 hung in init. Before shot 22, Pat announced that the next shot would be "shot 21". The shot went through, and the data were stored in shot number 21 (not 1070622021, but 21). Josh moved the data to 1070622022. Early hards appeared on quite a few shots. Fiddling with prefill had little or no obvious effect. There were no fizzles today, despite having 10 full-current (800 kA) disruptions. This probably says something about boronization, which was done overnight before the run. We ran both SNL and SNU shots today, with cryopump at liquid helium temperature for shots 18, 20 and 21, all upper single-null. Scorecard: plasmas 19 power supply duds 2 no power cycle 1 Total cycles 22 (plus a second, stealth shot 18) |

| Jun 22 2007 09:11:29:387AM | Amanda Hubbard | 'Good boronization' last night. Added to the remaining boron before 1070621, this should give good wall conditions. | |
| Jun 22 2007 09:34:47:280AM | 1070622001 | Amanda Hubbard | Disrupts 0.83 s. Cooling event 0.813x ms.
Got 1.7 MW ICRF (J+E) at 0.7 s as requested. Also 300 kW of LHCD at 0.8. Decent H-mode, nel 0.74-1.4 e20 m-2. ne0 2.4 e20 m-3. Te0 ~ 3 keV. |
| Jun 22 2007 09:48:38:683AM | 1070622002 | Amanda Hubbard | Disrupts 0.825 s - veru similar event to shot 1. Chopper problem suspected.
Note that ne rise in (short) H-mode is lower this shot; good news. |
| Jun 22 2007 10:15:57:797AM | 1070622003 | Amanda Hubbard | Ohmic discharge -ran through. Note it is dithering ~ 0.6 secs. |
| Jun 22 2007 10:57:07:687AM | 1070622005 | Amanda Hubbard | LH only for this shot. 420 kW, at 0.8 s. Ran well with slightly increased gaps (Rout 90.1-90.3 cm); plasma looks 'normal' |
| Jun 22 2007 01:31:33:307PM | 1070622007 | Amanda Hubbard | ICRH and LH - another chopper disruption at 0.775. |
| Jun 22 2007 01:37:40:013PM | 1070622009 | Amanda Hubbard |
ICRF and LH - chopper disruption again, soon after LH on. |
| Jun 22 2007 01:40:31:330PM | 1070622010 | Amanda Hubbard | ICRF, plus LH into dummy load. Runs through. J has HV trip, very late H-mode with E only. More ELM-free.
|
| Jun 22 2007 02:00:08:360PM | 1070622011 | Amanda Hubbard | E-only, plus LHCD at 0.8 s.
Disrupted at ~ 1 sec, another EFC problem. L-mode. LH 400 kW clean, Refl ~ 25%, which is decent, but very little effect on the plasma (no ECE response, little Vloop). |
| Jun 22 2007 02:45:01:380PM | 1070622013 | Amanda Hubbard | Repeat, following changes in power room.
Very similar disruption at 1 sec. Unuaual plasma transtion ~0.95 s - radiation increases, edge ECE goes up, core ECE drops. Hards go up. Maybe a non-thermal dump? Next shot: switch to upper null L-mode (step 3 of plan). LH on at 0.7 s, ICRF (E+J) on at 0.9. |
| Jun 22 2007 03:02:24:453PM | 1070622014 | Amanda Hubbard | switch to upper null L-mode (step 3 of plan). LH on at 0.7 s, ICRF (E+J) on at 0.9.
Plasma disrupts at 1 sec again! Got some non-thermals during LH-only phase. They drop when ICRF comes on, though reflections are OK and LH does not trip. May be due to ne puff- start cooling down cryopump in case it is needed. Next shot: LH into dummy load. |
| Jun 22 2007 03:02:46:797PM | 1070622015 | Amanda Hubbard |
LH into dummy load. Disrupts anyway. |
| Jun 22 2007 03:45:55:723PM | 1070622015 | Amanda Hubbard | LH into dummy load. ICRF into plasma. EFC disruption at 0.95 s anyway. |
| Jun 22 2007 03:46:37:283PM | 1070622016 | Amanda Hubbard | No LH, ICRF or DNB. Runs through, not v interesting. |
| Jun 22 2007 03:44:21:547PM | 1070622017 | Amanda Hubbard | LHCD only into USN target - runs through fine. Got some non-thermals, GPC2 ~ 1 keV.
Nel 6e19 m-2, ne0 ~1.4e20 m-3. Some Vloop drop. Next: Add E-port ICRF only, and use cryopump. |
| Jun 22 2007 04:16:03:827PM | 1070622018 | Amanda Hubbard | J-port only. Cryopump was COLD. Kept nel fairly constant at 6e19 m-3.
Still USN, L-mode. Next, add LHCD (which we intended this shot, was confusion because of the no power shot). |
| Jun 22 2007 04:36:57:267PM | 1070622019 | Amanda Hubbard | no power - data problems. |
| Jun 22 2007 05:02:15:457PM | 1070622020 | Amanda Hubbard | Full length plasma with LHCD. But, J-port did not run (computer issues related to server hang, we think).
Steady nel 6e19 with Cryopump ON. ~ 2 keV non-thermal ECE. |
| Jun 22 2007 05:15:24:717PM | 1070622021 | Amanda Hubbard | Finally got LHCD with J-port ICRF.
Interesting discharge - non thermsls (ECE, neuts/hards), clearly DROP back to near-ohmic levels when ICRF comes on (0.9-1.026 s) and recover, even increase, after it trips out. May be due to a gas puff, though cryopump, which is still cold, keeps nel quite constant. Full length shot, Li pellet at 1.4 s. |
