| Run Plan for 1070626, pm session
MP#489 "Damping rate of TAEs near stability threshold with ICRF fast ions" Goal **** Observe the stability of moderate n (~6-14) TAEs relative to the ICRF generated ion tail temperature as the ICRF power is successively increased. This experiment was preliminarily investigated on 1060526 under MP#404a, and was resumed recently on 1070605 with an improved set of magnetic field probes, but with ICRF unable to surpass 2.1MW. Today's run will attempt to extend the ICRF scan to higher power as well as to add statistics in conditions already achieved on 1070605. Run Preparation *************** * Prepare argon for HIREX * Setup GPC2 gratings for 5.9 T * Enable the dpcs_ftae2 procedure in DPCS (see Wolfe email of 1070601) * Turn on Active MHD and set qAE to 1.5, AE_order to 2 Run Plan ******** Reload equilibrium from 1070605020. Shot Plan ********* Attempt highest possible RF power, hopefully up to 3.5MW, during 0.75-1.5s. Consider modifying nl04 down to 0.6e20 and Ip up to 0.7 MA on recommendation of RF operator for maximum heating efficiency. If J port is not able to operate for the full period, repeat attempt at highest power several times, at least until a good fTAE sweep is obtained during J operation. Then decrease RF power in 0.5 MW steps to 0. The most important shots for this run are those above 2.1MW, which will provide additional data points outside the range of 1070605. Contingency *********** If power supply problems prohibit ICRF operation above 2.1MW, repeat the scan from 1070605. Then if time remains, move to diverted and H mode configuration (as in 1051202011) and repeat the power scan from highest available power to 0. |

| Today was a successful run with some great RF shots. We ended at 3pm for the PSFC barbeque, but still achieved 23 shots and 16 full length discharges. Great job Bill.
We nearly achieved the target RF power, getting up to 3.1MW. Thanks Yijun. More importantly, we observed UNSTABLE TAEs in shots 3 and 4, indicating that we achieved high enough tail energies to drive the total damping rate to zero. Other RF powers between 2 and 3MW were also filled in. The cryopump seemed to be a valuable tool to decrease the neutral pressure in the antenna box and assist in RF operation. TAEs during RF were hard to observe despite good Active MHD amplifier performance and reasonable signal to noise of the magnetic probes. This could be possibly because they weren't being excited or because they had such low damping rates (and thus exist in very narrow frequency bands) that I missed them in preliminary analysis. With this second possibility in mind, I decreased the Active MHD frequency sweep rate for several shots near the end of the run to expand any low damping rate resonances in time. The system function was certainly not stationary throughout each shot, but did its evolution represent TAEs? More analysis will be necessary to distinguish system resonances (which should be compensated by the standard calibration) from TAEs. During early shots I found that a very convincing TAE was observed around 0.291s in most shots (before RF started). I took advantage of this reliability by cutting out the Active MHD for a short time starting right at 0.291s. A true resonant mode with a low damping rate will continue to oscillate for several periods when the drive is removed. From time traces, it should be clear whether a resonant mode existed there. I will need to remove the direct coupling component before a conclusion can be made, however. Finally, in the case that TAEs simply weren't excitable or observable during the RF phase, I increased the current in the last two shots to a more standard 0.8MA in an attempt to bring the q=1.5 surface closer to the Active MHD antennas and magnetic probes. The plasmas configuration was limited on the high field side. The cryopump was used after shot 001 to reduce the neutral gas pressure in the vicinity of J-port antenna. The conventional wisdom (I do not know how well this has been demonstrated) is that the pressure reduction leads to more reliable J-port performance. J-port was reliable today. A glowing spot on the high field side between G and H ports was correlated with high RF power. This persisted throughout the day but disappeared for the shots with lower RF power. Two shots disrupted (001 and 002) and several displayed locked modes. The disruptions stopped when the RF was started before time of disruption. Appearance of the locked mode was correlated with RF turn off. The locked mode was removed from the flat top by extending the RF to the end of the flattop. plasmas 001(disruption),002(disruption),003,004,005, 006,007,008,009,015,016,017,018,019,020,021, 022,023 duds due to power supply failure 010,011,012. power supply tests 013,014 Scorecard 18 Plasmas 00 Fizzles 00 Duds 03 Duds due to power supply failure 02 Power supply tests --------------------- 23 total |

Increased density target back to 0.7e20 to try to get unstable mode back. Forgot to mention the change to RF, so only 2MW. Also, all my previous shot summaries today were under MHD rather than session_leader. |

| Jun 26 2007 07:50:33:263AM | Bill Rowan | The beam will not be available today. Bob reported that the breaker is out. The beam was not requested by the SL for today, but it will be needed later in the week. Will wait until Dexter has an opportunity to look at this. | |
| Jun 26 2007 08:20:45:380AM | Bill Rowan | Loaded 1070605020.
The shot loaded was cryopumped. SL has requested cryopumping if available. Jim is checking. Import segment 1 from 1070622020. This is a cryo pumped shot. Will change the prefill if cryopumping is not available. Earlier in run 1070622, when cryopump was not on, the prefill was set to 18 ms. Will use that if there is no cryo on the first shot. | |
