MP 480, run #2:
Last time we successfully scanned density and topology through the desired phase space collecting flow and fluctuation data on all probes. However, we were cautious with the plunge depths and occasionally did not reach the steep gradient region with one or more probes. Today, our first goal will be to revisit the most interesting configurations and be sure to get a shot with all probes scanning sufficiently deep before moving on. We will attempt to keep plasma conditions as steady as possible during the shot to increase the chances of having good data from all three probes on at least one scan. This means there should be no ramp in density, SSEP or the gaps during the shot. We will be focusing on low deinsites where the flow dynamics are the most interesting. We will also iclude an SSEP scan at intermediate density to look at flow and gradient behaviour in the secondary separatrix region. If time permits we will go to a low power (Ip=0.6 mA) shot and attempt to scan the probes as deep as possible. We will reduce the TF correspondingly to keep the edge q constant (Bt=4.0 T). These shots will be at an "intermediate" density of NL04=0.6, with an n/nG similar to NL04=0.8 at Ip=0.8 mA.

Day 2 of MP 480 was carried out today. We had a productive run with only 2 fizzles, although one was caused by some power supply problems and created a significant delay. We accomplished the density scan in USN and LSN getting good flow data for NL04~0.5,0.6,0.8 and 1.0e20m-2. We also got fluctuation data for both topologies at NL04~0.6e20m-2.

The SSEP scan was difficult to implement because each change in SSEP changed the gaps and made it difficult to target the probes. We focused on USN near-double nulls because we previously got some points in LSN near-double null on 5/11. We got good data at SSEP~2mm and SSEP~5mm. We also attempted to get data at SSEP~-5mm and in balanced double null but were forced to move on before we were completely satisfied with the results.

We did not get the opportunity to take the proposed shots at low power (0.6MA and 4.0T).

Our flow measurements supplemented by a number of other diagnostics, including Charge exchange from the DNB and NINJA puffs, as well as X-ray spectroscopy. Dust injection and lithium pellet injection were allowed late in the shots.

Run summary for Wednesday 27 June 2007

MP#480: WASP Experiments: Topology effect on SOL Total Flow Vector

Session leaders: N. Smick
Physics operator: R. Granetz

The machine ran very reliably today in lower null, upper null, and double
null configurations. Most of the physop work today, in addition to the
topology changes, involved careful adjustments of inboard and outboard
gaps, SSEP, and density. Today's operation was ohmic only. There were
only two fizzles, one of which was due to the DNB running out of LHe in one
pump just an hour before the end of the day, which raised the pre-fill
pressure when its gate valve opened. The other (shot 1070627016) was due
to a curious, subtle problem with OH2L. It started putting out about a
kiloamp right when it turned on at t=-1.1 s, and the extra 1 kA stayed on
the output through t=0, resulting in a bad Br0. This problem was
apparently caused by an incorrect voltage signal involved in the internal
feedback of the OH2L supply. The problem went away on the next shot,
without us having done anything, and did not come back today.

Scorecard: 30 plasmas
            0 duds

ZXU in Seg 02 was ""called"" to update for the F10 problem.

Numerous changes to nl_04 and gaps were made in multiple segments, as specified in the
session leader's run plan.

The SSEP scan in seg 04 was turned off.
Jun 27 2007 08:51:36:360AMRobert GranetzI turned off the dpcs_ftae2 routine in DPCS (alerted to this by Steve Wolfe).
Jun 27 2007 09:17:28:317AM1070627001Robert GranetzShot 01 -- Plasma. Good shot. LSN, 0.8 MA, 5.4 T, 0.5e20 m-2.

Next shot: decrease inboard gap by 2 mm; increase outer gap by 2 mm.
Turn on NINJA and dust. NINJA will puff at 1.2 s. Dust will
inject around t=1.3 s.
Jun 27 2007 09:29:51:687AM1070627002Robert GranetzShot 02 -- Plasma. Good shot. Gaps okay. However, there was effectively an SSEP scan,
because ZXU still was using F10. I specifically corrected this last night while
preparing the starting shot, but the change is not there now. Really weird.

Next shot: ""call"" ZXU Fluxihh to update so F10 is not used. Ok'd it and loaded it.
Jun 27 2007 09:41:38:337AM1070627003Robert GranetzShot 03 -- Plasma. Good shot. Pseudo-SSEP sweep is finally gone. Gaps look the same.

Next shot: tweak outer gap during latter portion of flattop.
Jun 27 2007 09:54:35:767AM1070627004Robert GranetzShot 04 -- Plasma. Good shot. Some early hard x-rays. Good gap control.

Jun 27 2007 11:30:00:310AM1070627011Robert GranetzShot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good gaps.

Next shot: no DPCS changes
Jun 27 2007 11:46:14:120AM1070627012Robert GranetzShot 12 -- Plasma. Good shot. Plasma was strangely cold for the first 0.5 seconds,
which drastically changed the power supply responses.

Next shot: try again, no DPCS changes
Jun 27 2007 11:56:35:940AM1070627013Robert GranetzShot 13 -- Plasma. Good shot. Back to normal Te and Wth for first 0.5 seconds.

Next shot: raise nl_04 to 0.6e20 m-2
Jun 27 2007 12:10:49:543PM1070627014Robert GranetzShot 14 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: no DPCS changes
Jun 27 2007 12:23:27:210PM1070627015Robert GranetzShot 15 -- Plasma. Good shot. Upper null. Another example of unusually low Te
and Wth for first 0.5 s of discharge. No obvious reason for this.

Next shot: raise nl_04 to 0.8e20 m-2. Also start diverting earlier to see if we
can avoid the funny kinetic effect before t=0.5 s on some shots.
Jun 27 2007 01:17:04:173PM1070627016Robert GranetzShot 16 -- Fizzle. Br0 was wrong, but there were no magnetics problems reported, and all
the power supplies look okay. Steve notes that OH2L was off be 1 kA. There are
some small differences way back at t=-1.0 s, but you really have to look
carefully.

Next shot: try again; see if the OH2 problem just goes away.
Jun 27 2007 01:30:54:463PM1070627017Robert GranetzShot 17 -- Plasma. Good shot. OH2L problem went away.

Next shot: Tweak density down. Also, the lithium pellet injector will
fire at t=1.4 s.
Jun 27 2007 01:44:39:913PM1070627018Robert GranetzShot 18 -- Plasma. Good shot. Upper null.

Next shot: change to double null. SSEP is on, but programmed for zero.
Jun 27 2007 01:56:11:453PM1070627019Robert GranetzShot 19 -- Plasma. Good shot. Pretty good double null. Li pellet came in
at t=1.4 s.

Next shot: increase inner gap by 5 mm; decrease outer gap.
Jun 27 2007 02:07:27:087PM1070627020Robert GranetzShot 20 -- Plasma. Good shot. Double null.

Next shot: tweak RCUR to keep the outer gap around 12 mm, and constant.
Jun 27 2007 02:21:06:770PM1070627021Robert GranetzShot 21 -- Plasma. Good shot. Double null. Outer gap is fairly constant
at 12-13 mm, as desired.

Next shot: move RXU out by 3.5 cm. Also tweak nl_04 down to 0.75e20 m-2.
Jun 27 2007 02:36:00:390PM1070627022Robert GranetzShot 22 -- Plasma. Good shot. Double null. Lithium pellet at t=1.4 s.

Next shot: change SSEP to +5 mm.
Jun 27 2007 02:51:21:493PM1070627023Robert GranetzShot 23 -- Plasma. OK shot. Disrupted during rampdown. It's still close to double null.
Gap control is not as good as in preceding shots. This method of trying to get
a barely upper null configuration doesn't seem to be a robust method.

Next shot: Try turning on seg 3 (upper null, as done on shot 18), but move ZXL up by 2 cm.
Jun 27 2007 03:01:45:250PM1070627024Robert GranetzShot 24 -- Plasma. Good shot. Good SSEP (+5 mm).

Next shot: repeat; no DPCS changes
Jun 27 2007 03:21:36:110PM1070627025Robert GranetzShot 25 -- Plasma. Good shot. SSEP = +5 mm.

Next shot: move ZXL up another 5 mm to try and decrease SSEP to +2.5 mm.
Jun 27 2007 03:31:14:603PM1070627026Robert GranetzShot 26 -- Plasma. Good shot. SSEP only dropped by 1 mm to +4 mm.

Next shot: move ZXL in seg 3 another 1 cm up, in order to decrease SSEP some more.
Jun 27 2007 03:57:33:577PM1070627027Robert GranetzShot 27 -- Plasma. Good shot. SSEP is about +1 mm...very close to double null (at least
according to EFIT).

Next shot: switch to lower null; move ZXU down by 3 cm to try and get SSEP around -5 mm.
Jun 27 2007 04:10:36:803PM1070627028Robert GranetzShot 28 -- Fizzle. Fields look pretty good this time. Fill pressure was up by 0.01 mTorr for
some reason. Looks like it might be the DNB, which has apparently just
run out of LHe. It's chamber pressure jumped up to the 10^-5 torr range.

Next shot: disable the DNB gate valve
Jun 27 2007 04:25:41:270PM1070627029Robert GranetzShot 29 -- Plasma. Good shot. SSEP ramps from -1.0 to -0.5 cm during the flattop.

Next shot: reload shot 9 (lower null), but raise nl_04 to 0.95e20 m-2.
Jun 27 2007 04:36:02:043PM1070627030Robert GranetzShot 30 -- Plasma. Good shot. The shot number on the big board is reading zero.

Next shot: reduce inboard and outboard gaps by 2 mm.
Jun 27 2007 04:48:14:490PM1070627031Robert GranetzShot 31 -- Plasma. Good shot.

Next shot: reload shot 1070627018 (upper null); increase nl_04 to 0.95e20 m-2
Jun 27 2007 04:57:42:370PM1070627032Robert GranetzShot 32 -- Plasma. Good shot. Upper null.
