Physop Run Plan:
-----------------
The SL plan calls for re-producing the plasma of 1020926030,
which pre-dates DPCS and the installation of the A-coils. The standard
ohmic H-mode/ITB prescription (ramp TF down to 3.2T to get H-mode, then
back up to 4.6T will be used, as programmed on the reference shot.
According to the logbook entries and summaries for 1020926, it
is important to get the triangularity match of the reference shot #30
in order to get a good EDA which will develop into ITB. Gaps for the
reference shot were leftgap~.02 and rightgap~.015m, delta_u>0.32,
delta_l~-.54. The high delta_u was only obtained after 0.9sec, and
there is a comment that it might be better to increase this value
(reduce RXU) earlier. Becaulse in the changes in diagnostics and
offsets since 2002, some tweaking is expected to be required to recover
the target shape. Also, I'll put in the B21_PROJ feedback on wire 9.
Start from a shot from 1070627 and import seg2 from 1020926030. Re-calculate
all the magnetics predictors (including Ip since the rogowski got changed).
Add B21_PROJ to wire 9. Note that CLEARIN and probably RCUR will almost
certainly need to be tweaked up. The CLEARIN waveform from the original
has a ramp to +.01; I think the right program should be flat at about
0.01. The RCUR waveform is flat at .659; I think that needs to be
changed to .662. I'll leave the xpoint programming as is and adjust as
we go to try to match the triangularity. Will also need to put in a
100msec argon puff for HIREX at 0.3 sec (PG1).
Once the target shot is established and hopefully the H-mode and ITB's
are obtained, consider moving the RXU sweep earlier to get an earlier
H-mode/EDA transition. In this case, we may want to move the TF ramp-up
phase earlier as well. We may be able to speed up the TF ramp-down as well,
since in 2002 we were restricting the ramp rates.
According to the SL_PLAN, the only other PCS change would be to increase
the final TF target field to 5T so that the 80MHz ICRF would be near-axis
for tests of on-axis ICRF to arrest the density rise and test TEM model.

| Session leader summary
We had numerous short lived ITBs today but were frustrated in attempts to lengthen them or make them consistently from shot to shot. The best shots were 17, 19, and 27. Fluctuations were rampant on many shots, showing up on magnetics data as well as reflectometry and PCI. Unfortunately, the DNB was unavailable, foiling our plans to collect TI and rotation data from CXRS. Also, we were concerned about the effects of argon on being able to achieve EDA H-modes, so we had to cut the argon source as low as we could stand. This may limit the core data from HIREX and its clones. Shot 27 Shot 28 Short ITB followed by multiple back transitions, followed by a longer H-mode. No ITB in the second H mode. The RF didn't fire. The argon is back on. Shot 29 Long H-mode but no apparent ITB, except a little peaking at 1. s. The RF net power looks like it's zero, but the plasma acts like there was. The argon is back on. Shot 30 H mode with density peaking ends too early, before the rf pulse. RF power trace is there this time. I suspect the same amount went in on the last shot. The argon is still on. Shot 31 ITB survives to 1.06 s. The argon is off. Current is ramped down after H-mode onset. The ITB didn't make it long enough to catch the RF pulse. Shot 32 We overfilled the New Trees area on the disk, so we are waiting to see if the data set can be salvaged. Unfortunately, we could not salvage the full data set and we missed key density diagnostics. |

Physop summary for Thursday, June 28
MP#377 Ohmic ITB's with improved diagnostics
SL: Fiore, Rowan
PO: wolfe
The run started and ended with data system problems. In between
we had other troubles. The DNB had regenned last night, boiling off
its LHe, and was unavailable today, reducing the number of "improved
diagnostics" available.
The first two shots were no power, shot 3
ran but had no magnetics data; I should be able to generate an EFIT
from the DPCS data, though the first attempt to do this failed.
Shots #3-5 had short, ELM-free H-modes with no ITB.
We then spent shots #6-8 trying to resolve a high TF joint resistance reading.
The after shot scanner reading reported up to 8uOhm on turn 43 top-middle.
Gary put this joint on the camac and it read under 1.5uOhm on a
150kA TF test (#8), so we decided it was all right. The next plasma
attempt #9 was a super-fizzle, getting to 150kA at 30msec before snuffing.
Probably the visiting dignitary effect.
Shots#10-14 continued the string of non-ITB h-modes, as we played more
with shapes and Bt waveform without success. For shot #15 we turned off
the argon (potentially removing more of the "improved diagnostics") and were
rewarded with a decent ITB, though the first H-mode didn't last the whole
shot. Continuing with no argon puff, we got what turned out to be the
best ITB's of the day on #16 and 17, longer single H-modes with sustained
ITB's which eventually suffered H-L (radiation collapse I think) and then
disrupted. These had a variety of interesting fluctuations seen on
multiple diagnostics, and there was still enough argon hanging around
for HIREX_SR to analyze during the H/ITB phase. Putting back a short 15ms
argon puff on shot #18 coincided with another shorter H-mode/ITB phase,
although it's not clear the argon was responsible this time. The disruptions
seemed to have taken a toll on the boronization, and moly and iron were
both up.
We continued trying to extend or improve the ITB's for the rest of the
day, and shot #19, also with a short argon puff, wasn't bad, but it
was pretty much downhill from there. ICRF was turned on beginning with
shot 28, timing at 1.1sec after the field was back up to 5T in an attempt
to arrest the density peaking, but by that stage the ITB's weren't lasting
long enough so we didn't really get anything but a weak RF H-mode.
We did do some exploration of triangularity, and it seemed that somewhat
lower triangularity than on 1020926030 actually kept the ITB longer,
contrary to expectations and previous belief. Also, dropping Ip after
the L-H seemed to be helpful.
The last shot #32 overfilled the data disk, resulting in lots of
datasystem errors. JOsh managed to recover some but not all the data,
and it may be possible to re-run some analysis routines. It looked like
the ITB lasted a little longer on 32, at 600kA, than it had on 31
at 700kA. However, thomson raw data apparently couldn't be recovered.
Tom and Josh should probably look into putting the cmod/trees/new/
directories on a larger disk volume. It seems to be on a 65Gb disk, and
we were taking about 2Gb/shot, so over 30 shots is asking for trouble,
and we got it!

| Jun 28 2007 08:22:49:420AM | Bill Rowan | Beam availability (from Dexter)
The beam cryopumps regenerated last night, despite the fill that Edgar did after the run. Apparently the humid air has caused ice to form a thermal short. Regeneration (defrosting) of the DNB cryo pumps is still in-progress. The last of the liquid helium evaporated around 23:00 last night, and although the fill is off, there is very likely still liquid nitrogen in the outer jackets of the pumps. Once the structure all warms up, we would be able to recool with LN2, wait for the metal structure to cool, and fill with liquid helium. This entire process will take at least four six more hours so operation today is very unlikely. The reason for the warmup was a very large thermal leak into the helium. We normally can last a week or more on a 100% fill of LHe; we filled last night to 40% and it was evaporated in less than one hour. The thermal leaks are typically caused by H20 ice so a warmup should cure everything. | |

| Jun 28 2007 12:17:49:073PM | 1070628011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: Increase CLEARIN from .01 to .012 plasma, still multiple H-modes. Maybe the third one is a little better. Try ramping tf up a little earlier, since we're getting H-mode by .8sec |
| Jun 28 2007 12:18:15:357PM | 1070628012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: Start reverse TF ramp at 0.85 to .95sec plasma, more short h-modes, no eda phase this time. |
| Jun 28 2007 12:25:45:580PM | 1070628013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: Decrease RXU (upper triang) back to -.02 from -.03 No Power shot - PF breaker pulled out with a type 1 fault. |
| Jun 28 2007 12:41:21:170PM | 1070628014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: Decrease RXU (upper triang) back to -.02 from -.03 H-modes still too short. Next: turn off argon for a shot or two |
| Jun 28 2007 12:54:31:430PM | 1070628015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: turn off argon for a shot or two One longer h-mode, then a second EDA'ish h-mode. Actually the first one doesn't look bad as far as peaking is concerned. Next: repeat |
| Jun 28 2007 01:10:22:617PM | 1070628016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16:repeat Longer ITB until 1.15, then disrupts at 1.22sec Stored energy increasing throughout H-mode. TS ne0 gets to 7e20. |
| Jun 28 2007 01:38:15:903PM | 1070628017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: drop pg4 from 18 to 16msec, otherwise repeat (leave Ar off one more shot) Possible computer problem, lost Pat's voice Plasma, another ITB, still disrupting around 1.25sec Very similar to 16 Interesting fluctuations on magnetics on this shot. Something at ~700kHz early in H-mode, then multiple modes 50 to 150kHz, starting around .9sec, plus a 10kHz tearing? mode. Big burst at the end of Hmode |
| Jun 28 2007 01:37:45:247PM | 1070628018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: Put back a short argon puff, 15ms at 0.3sec Shorter first h-mode, second one not as good, but plasma full length. ITB phase ends at 1.0sec |
| Jun 28 2007 01:51:14:850PM | 1070628019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Repeat, leaving 15msec of Argon on. plasma, longer ITB, disruption at 1.33sec Next: allow earlier NINJA puff, leave argon at 15ms |
| Jun 28 2007 02:03:41:420PM | 1070628020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: allow earlier NINJA puff, leave argon at 15ms No other changes Shorter ITB phase, full length plasma Drops out of H-mode about 1.04 sec. No second H-mode. It was ITB while it lasted. |
| Jun 28 2007 02:16:33:620PM | 1070628021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Bring TF up to 5T (139kA) Delay NINJA to 1.3sec ITB until 1.16sec, no second H-mode. Plasma lasts full length. Next: turn on ICRF at 1.1sec 500kW |
| Jun 28 2007 02:35:19:350PM | 1070628022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: Start TF back up at 0.8sec, argon back off for a shot turn on ICRF at 1.1sec 500kW ITB still shorter than earlier, ends at 1sec Didn't seem to get ICRF. Next: raise nl04 from 7 to 8e19 |
| Jun 28 2007 02:46:06:907PM | 1070628023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23:raise nl04 from 7 to 8e19, leave argon off RF is having a demand problem, off for this shot. NO H-mode, too much density I guess. |
| Jun 28 2007 03:11:57:570PM | 1070628024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24:Nl04 from 8 to 6e19; this is really finicky. Back to a short Hmode, ends at 1.04sec Back to TF program as on 20 |
| Jun 28 2007 03:24:22:360PM | 1070628025 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#25:Back to TF program as on 20, ramp up to 4.6 T starting at 0.85sec Two H-modes, some ITB character on first. |
| Jun 28 2007 03:34:45:057PM | 1070628026 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#26: Turn argon back on (15msec) RXU from -.02 to -.03 Maybe a little worse, ITB lives to 1.0sec Next: try less triangular |
| Jun 28 2007 04:05:49:123PM | 1070628028 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#28: TF back up to 5T (139kA), try to turn on RF at 1.1sec Argon puff from 15 to 25msec ITB in first H-mode ?, then junk during rf faulting, then a third hmode with no ITB. |
| Jun 28 2007 04:19:18:183PM | 1070628029 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#29: Repeat, try to get rf to run Two hmodes again, something stops the density rise. No net power trace from D, but it looks like there was some power there. There is a "system fault" message on the rf screen. |
| Jun 28 2007 04:32:47:770PM | 1070628030 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#30: Raise nl04 back from 6 to 7e19 First h-mode only to 0.95sec, has ITB Got the rf trace this time, looks fine but second h-mode is just central rf no ITB. |
| Jun 28 2007 05:02:10:590PM | 1070628032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: Drop Ip to 600kA after 0.8sec small back transition at 1sec, then keeps going looks like a lot of data errors. EFIT data didn't show up. Ran it manually and it still didn't show up, although it ran. Jerry is reporting tree failure problem New tree area has zero free blocks. Josh is working on it. |
| Jun 28 2007 05:24:13:093PM | 1070628032 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#32: Data from the last shot were partially restored by Josh, after he made room. However, thomson seems to be gone forever, also DALSA. It's too late to try another shot, and there doesn't seem to be enough room anyway. END OF CRAWL. |
