| MP#493 ""Ohmic L-H Threshold Experiments"" Goal Investigate in detail the plasma conditions near the last-closed flux surface (pressure gradients, collisionality, plasma flows, ...) that are associated with ohmic L-H transitions. Approach We will ""dial-up"" some ohmic H-modes by the usual method of ramping the toroidal field down and then back up slightly after L-H transition. We will look at edge plasma flows and gradients just before and after transition with all available edge diagnositcs. In particular, we will be taking the time to optimize scanning probe insertion depths and times. Plan Load from shot#1070627008. Program a TF ramp-down, starting at 5.4 tesla at 0.3s, ramping down to 3.2 tesla by 1.0s and then back up to 3.5 tesla - this TF ramp would be the same as on shot #1000915019, but delayed by 0.2 seconds. Program NL04 ~ 0.65 x10^20 m^-2. Optimize ohmic H-mode (start time, transition from ELM-free to EDA) by adjusting TF ramp and starting density. A. 0.8 MA, LSN - 8 shots i. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths and scan times to record conditions just before (1 scan) and during H-mode (2 scans). ii. Scan probes to record conditions well before the L-H transition, while q95 is ramping down. B. 0.8 MA, USN - 2 shots Reload from shot #1070627018. Program same plasma current, TF ramp and target density as in ""A"". i. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths and scan times to record conditions as q95 is ramping down (0.5, 0.75, 1.0 s) - make sure that the probes scan deep enough to resolve shear layer. C. 0.6 MA, LSN - 8 shots Go back to LSN discharge. Reprogram for 0.6 MA. Start the TF ramp-down earlier at 0.1s, ramping down to 2.4 tesla by 1.0s and then back up to 2.7 tesla. Program NL04 ~ 0.6 x10^20 m^-2. Optimize ohmic H-mode (start time, transition from ELM-free to EDA) by adjusting TF ramp and starting density. i. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths and scan times to record conditions just before (1 scan) and during H-mode (2 scans). ii. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths and scan times to record conditions well before the L-H transition, while q95 is ramping down. D. 0.8 MA, USN - 2 shots Reload a shot from ""B"" above. Program same plasma current, TF ramp and target density as in ""C"". i. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths and scan times to record conditions as q95 is ramping down (0.5, 0.75, 1.0 s) - make sure that the probes scan deep enough to resolve shear layer. E. 1.2 MA, LSN - 6 shots Back to LSN discharge, but with plasma current of 1.2 MA and toroidal field of 6 tesla. Program TF ramp-down from 6 tesla at 0.5s, to 4.8 tesla by 0.9s and then back up to 5.4 tesla. Program NL04 ~ 0.7 x10^20 m^-2. Optimize ohmic H-mode (start time, transition from ELM-free to EDA) by adjusting TF ramp and starting density. i. Optimize scanning probe plunge depths and scan times to record conditions just before (1 scan) and during H-mode (2 scans). F. 1.2 MA, USN - 2 shots Reload a shot from ""D"" above. Program same plasma current, TF ramp and target density as in ""E"". |

| Run Summary for 1070710 MP#493 ""Ohmic L-H Threshold Experiments"" This was a painful run. There were numerous delays - cell entry, cooling requirements and a long break to diagnose an apparent problem with the TF power supplies. By noon time we had taken only 5 shots, 4 with plasma. Ohmic H-mode did show up on shot#3, but very late, completely ignoring our programmed TF rampdown phase. Then we had trouble (at first) programming a rampdown to a lower field, costing a few shots. Finally, for no know reason, the H-modes did start showing up at the desired time (~1 s on shot#8, 1pm). For added annoyance, the spectroscopy tree files began disappearing on some shots. Josh fixed this from time-to-time with further delays. On shot #11 we finally got the desired probe scans with one in H-mode. On shot #13 we attempted some deep probe scans (ASP, FSP, WASP all firing) into the H-mode phase. This was a mistake. One or more of the probes caused a disruption, sending the plasma into the WASP probe and toasting it. Post-mortem analysis revealed that we shorted two 'east' probes together and two 'west' probes together. We then switched to running the A-port WASP but found out that we had also killed the probe bias power supplies. Then the news got even worse. We found that the ASP got completed wasted (all electrodes shorted together) by the disruption as well. The ASP probably caused the disruption. So there we were, left with only one operating scanning probe, FSP, which was actually working pretty well, hitting with a good H-mode scan - until shot#17 when the plasma also took careful aim at the FSP with an early disruption. This disruption occured just as the probe was nearing its full insertion (I don't think the probe caused that one). The result is that the south-east and south-west probes are shorted together. (We cannot replace this probe.) With our spirits and probes completely broken, we limped along for the last few shots, giving Bruce and Kenny an opportunity to pick over the carrion, scan the gaps and puff NINJA at the H-modes. Looking at the scattered bones, I think we only managed to complete section ""A"" of MP#493. Hopefully we can patch up our probes and get another run day to try sections ""B"" though ""F"". Meanwhile, don't look for me over the next few days. You will only find me hunkered down in the clean room with my diamond file trying to build a replacement A-port scanning probe head or two - if I'm not in the Edge Lab with Noah fixing the dead power supplies... ___________________________________________________________________________________ Quick shot log 1- data system test 2-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-3.3, no H-modes, NL04=0.62, SP @ 0.7, 0.9, 1.1s -in silos, ASP(+0), FSP(-15) 3-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-3.2, L-H @ 1.38, NL04=0.62, SP @ 0.7, 0.9, 1.1s, ASP(+8), FSP(-3) 4-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-3.2, L-H @ 1.33, NL04=0.66, SP @ 0.7, 0.9, 1.1s, ASP(+11)-cleaning up, FSP(-1)-good 5-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-3.2, L-H @ 1.34, NL04=0.67, SP @ 0.6, 0.8, 1.0s, ASP(+11), FSP(-1) 6-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-3.2, no H-modes, NL04=0.68, SP @ 0.6, 0.8, 1.0s, ASP(+12), FSP(-1) 7-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, no H-modes, NL04=0.72, SP @ 0.6, 0.8, 1.1s, ASP(+12), FSP(-1) 8-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, L-H @ 1.09, NL04=0.70, no SP 9-fizzle 10-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, L-H @ 1.25, NL04=0.72, SP @ 0.6, 1.0, 1.2s, ASP(+13), FSP(-1) 11-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, L-H @ 1.08, NL04=0.72, SP @ 0.6, 1.0, 1.2s, ASP(+13), FSP(-1) 12-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, L-H @ 1.0, NL04=0.78, SP @ 0.6, 1.0, 1.2s, ASP(+14), FSP(0) 13-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, L-H @ 1.1, NL04=0.72, SP @ 1.2s - disrupts plasma, ASP(+16), FSP(+3) 14-LSN, Ip=0.8, Bt=5.4-2.8, L-H @ 1.06, NL04=0.68, SP @ 0.6, 1.0, 1.2s, ASP(+14), FSP(0) FSP is ok. | We began by loading shot 1070624008 which was a shot that had been nicely tuned up for the scanning probes. We ramped the TF down to generate the ohmic h-mode and then back up to sustain it. It took several shots to get the TF ramped down to the proper value and some time was spent investigating a problem with the TF control system that was not actually a problem. So we didn't really get good h-modes until shot 8. It is not clear why earlier shots did not go into h-mode as early as on shot 8. Shot 7 and shot 8 were from the DCPS point-of-view identical. Shot 8 did have less radiation before the h-mode. From shot 8 onward we had no problem generating useful h-modes.
