Session Leader plan for plasma startup portion of Tuesday, July 17, 2007 - Reverse field startup MP#298a C-Mod startup SL: wolfe PO: Hutch The main part of today's run will be power system checkout following the reversal of the bus work. A 5-hour boronization is scheduled for the afternoon. In between, we will try to get reverse field startup and control ready for tomorrow's run. Power tests are scheduled to begin at 09:00 and estimated to take 4 hours. Nominal end time for plasma tests is 15:00, with possibility of extending to 16:00 if needed. Plan: ------ During power tests, monitor the magnetics and bus currents to verify the bus configuration. Monitor the DPCS outputs (with PLC power supply control) to verify correct polarity on the demands. For the plasma startup tests, the starting condition will be the shot designated for tomorrow's run, 1070614024, modified for reverse field operation. Note that this shot uses Segment 3 "1.0MA Upper Null". Engineering should set Power systems as on 1070614024 EXCEPT: Acoil in reverse configuration: -Dtop +Dbot +Jtop -Jtop Gas system setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) NINJA as is, disabled Enable the following gate valves, ssuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, DNB, Z-bolo shutters. Torvac setup: Gate valves open Physop PCS setup procedure is given in the note under topic HYBRID for 1070717. The goal will be to get a reasonably robust startup and verify control into the active segment. Along the way we'll be verifying that the correct fizzle sequence has been loaded (dpcs_fizzle source_shot=1060517007) to maintain +150kA and double swing the OH's to -15kA. If we get that far, we're done. If not, Earl gets to deal with it tomorrow. |

The power tests were completed well ahead of schedule, by about 11AM. Plasma attempts started with #14 and proceeded Dud, Fizzle, Plasma After the successful plasma on #16 we declared victory and stopped for the day. The shot was based on the starting shot for tomorrow, 1070614024. Note that the NL04 feedback was disabled for today's shot. The tweaks were to increase the pre-puff a little and make BR0 substantially more positive (started at -.003 and ended at +002.) The RCUR offset was left at +1000, and could possibly be decreased a little. TCI was not available because of an SF6 dump in the morning, so the shot was run with pre-programmed gas. Thomson indicated it was at 1e20 falling to 5e19/m^3. ECE was not on for #16, for unknown reasons. A successful mini-run, completed by noon. |

| Abnormal field direction setup completed.
In addition to the flipping of coil current traces and the calling of the B21 predictor with the new setting, it proved necessary for startup to approximately reverse the Br offset from -3mT to +2mT. That gave a full length plasma on shot 16. This shot 16 has nl04 zeroed in segment 3 which needs to be restored appropriately when the interferometer is operative. |

| Jul 17 2007 09:22:51:387AM | 1070717001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1 EFC test under PLC control. That seemed to work. However, it looks like the fizzle sequence did the right thing, and it was before Ian changed it?? |
| Jul 17 2007 09:29:40:927AM | 1070717002 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#2: EF2U power test looks ok. fizzle sequence seems to be in the right direction, I guess Ian had already loaded the new value before shot#1. Next: EF2L PLC test |
| Jul 17 2007 09:56:26:770AM | 1070717003 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#3: EF2L test looks ok. Next: A-coil test under hybrid control Draw a waveform in seg 1 and turn off seg3 |
| Jul 17 2007 09:55:13:453AM | 1070717004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4 Next: A-coil test under hybrid control Draw a waveform in seg 1 and turn off seg3 That looks like PLC control. Straight up and straight down at 800A, on at -.2 off at +1.8sec Also, the waveform ends early, at 1.7. That was the fizzle detector coming in. Next: Move on to EF3 |
| Jul 17 2007 10:08:46:797AM | 1070717004 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#4: The signs of the signals from the A-coil test on the locked mode loops match those from last year's test 1060517013. Magnitudes are about half, which is consistent since shot 13 had 1500A and this one 800. They seem to be hooked up correctly, I don't know that we need to re-test. Still need to confirm the B21_PROJ feedback |
| Jul 17 2007 10:01:47:323AM | 1070717005 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#5: EF3 test Looks ok. |
| Jul 17 2007 10:09:59:113AM | 1070717006 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#6: EF4 forward bridge test at 1000A Looks ok, field is positive. |
| Jul 17 2007 10:27:09:397AM | 1070717008 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#7: EF1U forward bridge test Shot#8: EF1L test, both look ok |
| Jul 17 2007 10:34:33:080AM | 1070717009 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#9: OH1 test, also looking at the demand from the B21_PROJ feedback. Actually, it shouldn't ask for anything because this is just forward bridge, and it will be in the fizzle segment anyway. Never mind. OH1 looks ok. Bz0 is negative. Moving on to OH2's |
| Jul 17 2007 10:44:36:090AM | 1070717010 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#10: OH2U test Looks ok, BR0 is negative, flux is positive. next OH2L |
| Jul 17 2007 10:54:19:193AM | 1070717011 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#11: OH2L test Looks ok, although there is a small overshoot on the bus current at the start of the pulse that did not show up on the upper. Field direction looks right. Next: TF test |
| Jul 17 2007 11:04:56:880AM | 1070717012 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#12: TF test (there will be two of these) 50kA TF test. Looks ok. |
| Jul 17 2007 11:16:55:237AM | 1070717013 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#13: 100kA TF test Got 100kA. After Bill checks the bus, we'll be ready to try for plasma. |
| Jul 17 2007 11:37:56:777AM | 1070717014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: First plasma attempt. TCI is dead due to an SF6 incident this morning. Ian is turning off NL04 feedback and will use pre-programmed PG3. Dud. Fill is pretty low, .035mTorr BR looks negative (more so than recent normal field shots) RCUR looks funny, way inside. OH2 currents look too far apart, I think the BR needs a big change. |
| Jul 17 2007 11:51:00:480AM | 1070717015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: Second plasma attempt. Fizzle, that's the right direction I think Looks like it may get lost vertically; also moving in. |
| Jul 17 2007 12:00:45:880PM | 1070717016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Third plasma attempt. plasma full length, looks pretty low density. Upper null, Right gap is down to 5mm according to EFIT around .4sec, near crossover. I think we're done. |

| Jul 17 2007 09:54:07:047AM | Ian Hutchinson | Followed Wolfe's instructions on shot 1070717 to do all the flips and to
change the dpcs_fizzle source to 1060517007. After Gary updates the B21 configuration, call the b21 predictor in segments 2-4. | |
| Jul 17 2007 11:15:36:140AM | Ian Hutchinson | Set RCUR offset to -1000 from +1000. | |
| Jul 17 2007 11:43:03:470AM | 1070717014 | Ian Hutchinson | Set nl04 gain to zero because the interferometer is inoperative.
There seems to be a reasonable preprogrammed density level in the V of seg 3. Try a full shot. Dud. For next shot. Fill puff to 20ms from 15ms. Br offset to 0 from -3mT. |
| Jul 17 2007 11:55:44:593AM | 1070717015 | Ian Hutchinson | Fizzle.
Br offset to +2mT. |
| Jul 17 2007 12:03:09:523PM | 1070717016 | Ian Hutchinson | Plasma to rampdown.
Seems to be a strong startup. |
