Session Leader Run Plan for 1070718
MP506: "H-modes with cryopumping in upper single null topology"

This reversed-field run in USN topology will attempt to combine H-mode
operation with strong pumping, with the goal of documenting H-mode
density control and pedestal profile response. Edge TS will be the
chief edge profile diagnostic, but we will also be looking for Ti and
rotation data from CXRS.

Overnight boronization is required, with vertical field.

Requested systems:
*Cryopump available and ready by shot 2
*Enable NINJA with 10psi D2, for diagnostic gas puffing. NINJA also
may be called for to supplement the main gas puff, in cases of strong
pumping and high target density.
*DNB request: at least 6A, 30/15ms ON/OFF, starting at 0.5s.
*ICRF request: 2--3MW flat, 0.7--1.3s

A. Load shot 1070614024 (USN, 5.4T, 1MA), with any necessary
modifications for reversed field.

1.) Program nl04=1e20m^-2. Prf=2MW flat from 0.7--1.3s. Pump at N2
temp. Obtain steady H-mode and adjust upper X-point and strikes as
desired for TS coverage, pumping slot positioning. (1--3 shots)

2.) Cool pump to He temp. Obtained pumped H-mode at 2MW (1--2 shots)

3.) Keep pump at He temp. Raise Prf to max. available for lower
collisionality H-mode (1--2 shots)

4.) Adjust target density, based on above results and repeat steps
1--3. (3--4 shots)

B. Lower Ip to 800kA. nl04 --> 8e19m^-2. Repeat steps in A. (6--8 shots)

C. Lower Ip to 600kA. nl04 --> 6e19m^-2. Repeat above steps. (6--8 shots)

D. Lower Ip to 400kA. nl04 --> 4e19m^-2. Repeat above steps. (6--8
shots)

Total shot count: 24--35 shots

MP506: "H-modes with cryopumping in upper single null topology"

SL: Jerry Hughes
PO: Earl Marmar

REVERSED FIELD and CURRENT (Counter-clockwise from above)

Prior to the run, overnight boronization, with vertical field, followed by 2 hours of ECDC in helium, fill pressure 5e-5 (gauge)

This reversed-field run in USN topology will attempt to combine H-mode
operation with strong pumping, with the goal of documenting H-mode
density control and pedestal profile response. Edge TS will be the
chief edge profile diagnostic, but we will also be looking for ion temperature and rotation data from CXRS.

Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00

Power systems as on 1070717016

(Acoil in reverse configuration: -Dtop +Dbot +Jtop -Jtop Hybrid Enabled)

Gas setup:
---------
Fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid ENABLED (PG1)
leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2)
fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3)
fill NINJA to 10 psi D2 and ENABLE.

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no problems:
ECE, VUV, DNB, Z-bolo shutters

Torvac setup: Gate valves open after the shot

ICRF Setup: All 4 transmitters in run-on by 8:30. Start with 2 MW (D+E), 0 MW (J), flat from .7 to 1.3 seconds. Add power from J in later shots, same timing.

LH Setup: No LH for this run

DNB: yes (CXRS required; MSE allowed)

Cryopump: ready to cool down following first good plasma.

Required diagnostics: Core and edge TS, TCI, ECE, all available CXRS, scanning probes, divertor probes and pressure gauges, edge Lyman alpha

Load 1070717016 (for segment 1).
Import segment 3 from 1070614024 (USN, 5.4 T, 1MA), and make appropriate changes for reversed field and current, as follows.
___________________________________
On doing IMPORT_SEG,
PCS should bring up the configuration warning screen. Read what it says
and note all changes since the date of the shot you are loading. You can
review this information by pushing the "Show HYBRID Config" button at the
bottom of the main screen.

The new entry for reverse field says:
7/16/2007 smw - Reverse field - Use FLIP on ALL_P and ALL_V screens to
invert waveforms
Recalculate B21_PROJ Predictor, change dpcs_fizzle source=1060517007 (ASYNC_PROS)

Detailed instructions are:

For each segment (it is best to deal with all of them, even the unused
ones, to avoid future accidents), bring up the ALL_P and ALL_V screens
and use the "FLIP" menu item (on the pop-up menu under the right mouse
button) to invert the following waveforms:

ALL_Ps (seg1): IC_OH1,IC_OH2U,IC_EF1U,IC_EF1L,IC_EF2U,IC_EF2L,IC_EF4U,IP
note: all of the traces in the right-hand column
V#01-16(seg1): OH1_VOLT,CHOPPER,OH2U_VOLT,OH2L_VOLT,EF1U_VOLT,EF1L_VOLT,
EF2U_VOLT,EF2L_VOLT,EF4_VOLT,EF3_VOLT,TF_CURRENT
note: everything but the pulse gas lines.
ALL_Ps (seg2-4) EF2_by_EF4,IC_EF4U,IP (and any other IC_* that may be there)
V#01-16 (seg2-4) OH1_VOLT,CHOPPER,OH2U_VOLT,OH2L_VOLT,EF1U_VOLT,EF1L_VOLT,
EF2U_VOLT,EF2L_VOLT,EF4_VOLT,EF3_VOLT,TF_CURRENT
note: everything but the pulse gas lines, same as for seg1.

If using the B21_PROJ feedback for locked mode control it is necessary
to recalculate the predictor on this wire. Note that the correct acoil
configuration for reverse field is (-Dtop +Dbot +Jtop -Jbot), the reverse
of the normal field direction. This must be properly entered by the
EngOp on his screen, and should be specified on the Physop run plan.

The dpcs_fizzle sequence also needs to be changed for reverse field.
Click on the ASYNC_PROS button in the next to the last row on the main
PCS screen, and click on the "dpcs_fizzle" menu item. This will bring
up an EDIT_Procedure popup form. Change the value in the field labeled
SOURCE_SHOT to 1060517007. Then OK the EDIT_Procedure screen.

An interesting run today. The goal of the run was to explore
cryopumping in H-modes in a regime we had imagined would be optimal,
i.e USN (for effective pumping on the outer leg) in reversed
field/current (for directing the ion-grad-B drift toward the X-point
and ease of H-mode access). We did successfully acquire a number of
H-modes at currents of 1.0, 0.8, 0.6 and 0.4MA, though not with a
substantial density scan at each current. We did not observe a
substantial level of density pump out at most of the densities we
tried. Furthermore, when we compare upper chamber pressures in
unpumped USN shots in forward vs. reversed field, we see a large
decrease in pressure for the reversed Bt direction. Our interpretation
of this effect is that the natural divertor asymmetry places the high
recycling on the inner leg instead of the outer leg, which is reducing
our ability to pump. So we were unable to really push to low
collisionality regimes today, and we determined that pumping is
probably really only a viable tool in forward field (with Bxgrad-B
downward), and with near double null topology.

The machine ran well today in reverse field and current. Break-down and ramp up was quite reliable, except:
2 shots were intended to be cryopumped, but the pump warmed up just before the shot, and as a result the fill pressure was high by about a factor of 2, and both shots fizzled;
1 shot, after a disruption, fizzled (probably should have lowered the fill).

There were a few delays for data acquisition:
linux home disk filled up;
TV camera data acquisition computers were hanging before one of the shots.

The first shot of the day was delay by more than 30 minutes for TF cooling.

Shot 27 disrupted during flat-top. It appears that EF2U suddenly stopped following the DPCS demand, or the demand to the supply suffered pickup (RF?) and the current went quickly to 0.

Early in the day, some data were lost to camac highway driver problems, requiring reboots.

Summary:
plasmas -- 27
fizzles -- 3

Total cycles 30.

nl04: 5e19
Cryopump: warm
Prf: Fairly steady 2MW
Shot looks eerily like the pumped shot 24.
It's looking like extremely weak pumping on these shots, and we see low upper chamber pressures in the unpumped cases, in contrast to the result in forward field USN. A direct comparison of 1070718014 and 1070614028 shows this.
Next shot: Run a repeat of shot 1070525013 with pump warm in order to compare directly the measured divertor pressures.

Prf: None
Upper chamber pressure is 2-3x lower in this shot than on the companion shot 1070525013!
Next shot: Pump on.
