| MSE beam-into-gas, no fields Start times: DNB conditioning starts at noon. shots into torus starting 1PM Purpose: measure the Doppler shift with a spectrometer looking through the MSE optics on a series of beam-into-gas shots with no toroidal or poloidal fields. Observe whether the Doppler shift changes shot-to-shot or within a shot. Such changes would imply that the MSE optics change their viewing angle with respect to the beam and would potentially explain the poor reproducibility of MSE. Reference shot: 1070402013. Fill gas = helium (he4). Desired pressure about 3 mTorr as measured on MKS. My understanding (based on data 5/29/2007) is that the g-side ratiomatic reads about a factor of 2 less than the MKS. We should check whether the same ratio holds for today. Assuming that it does, then we would want a pressure of 1.0 - 1.5 mTorr as indicated on the ratiomatic. Run plan: 1. If the desired torus pressure is not achieved, we may take a couple of shots to adjust the pressure to the desired range. 2. 10-20 shots, DNB into torus, no fields. DNB modulated: 80ms on, 20 ms off. start 0.4 sec. total duration = 1.8 sec. end at about 2.2 sec. total 'on' time = 1.44 sec. Bill Rowan will be operating the spectrometer remotely. MSE channel 9 (near optical axis) will be used. 3. 10 shots, DNB un-modulated. start 0.4 sec, end 1.8 sec. More spectrum measurements. still MSE ch 9. 4. Swap MSE channel to channel #0 (edge channel). Take about 10 shots, with either a modulated or un-modulated DNB. Choice will depend on which one provides more photons as measured in steps #2 and #3. 5. (Much lower priority) 5-10 shots where we deliberately reduce te DNB current. purpose is to correlate the spectral intensity with DNB current. |

| We had a successful day firing the dnb into the torus with no fields. DNB performance and performance of the gas system were both very reliable. shots 002 to 012 dnb = modulated (80 ms on, 20 ms off). fibers from MSE channel 9 into McPherson spectrometer. gas about 3.0 mTorr (peak), drooping to 1.8 at the end of the dnb, as measured by the g-side MKS. only bad shot was shot 10 -- dnb faulted. DNB current on shots 003 thru 009 very similar. current was a little lower on shot 002. the current waveform differed on shots 11 and 12 because Dexter tweaked the gas following the faults on shot 10. this is a good set to look for possible motion of MSE optics shots 013 thru 020 dnb = unmodulated. current not as high, typically 5. drooping to 4.0 gas still 2.8 mTorr max this is a good set to look for motion of MSE optics with an unmodulated beam. Jinseok also checked the temperature of the DNB drift tube during shots with a Raytek noncontact thermometer. He saw no changes larger than 1 degree Farenheit. |

| Jul 31 2007 12:58:33:367PM | 1070731001 | Steve Scott | First shot planned for about 1:00 PM. Starting with reference shot 1070402013. Expected torus pressure = 3 mTorr (g-side mks), = 1.5 mTorr (g-side-ratiomatic) MSE channel 9 being fed into the McPherson 1-meter monochrometer. DNB timing: 80 ms on, 20 ms off. Start 0.4 sec, end 2.2 sec. Result: 1) actual gas delivered looks very small or non-existant. 2) no DNB either. |
| Jul 31 2007 01:11:14:287PM | 1070731002 | Steve Scott | Rep rate for these shots will be about 6 minutes - limited by data acquisition. Result: good pressure: peak = 3.0 on MKS, about 1.3 on g-side ratiomatid good DNB. current = 6.0 amps, quickly dropping to about 5.2 no faults. |
| Jul 31 2007 01:22:40:817PM | 1070731003 | Steve Scott | good dnb. But it appears that we have a data hangup. investigating ... Two minutes later: data have arrived. peak pressure same as shot 2. ther is a little more pressure droop as time progresses, but OK overall. dnb current: peak = 6.0, but a little less droop. about 5.4 amps at the end. |
| Jul 31 2007 01:27:59:743PM | 1070731004 | Steve Scott | DNB: good. 6.2 amps, decreasing to 5.5 gas: good. |

| Jul 31 2007 02:36:46:493PM | 1070731011 | Steve Scott | Dexter tweaked dnb gas in test cell. Hopefully this will eliminate the faults that we experienced on the previous shot. dnb current is lower than on previous shots, particularly at the beginning, where we got only about 4.5 amps. gas: good |
| Jul 31 2007 02:45:06:770PM | 1070731012 | Steve Scott | DNB: about the same as shot 11. 4.5 amps early, rising to 5.5 gas: good |
| Jul 31 2007 03:01:37:460PM | 1070731013 | Steve Scott | Starting this shot, we will go to an UNMODULATED dnb. timing = 0.4 --> 1.8 sec. still using MSE channel 9 into the spectrometer. result: unmodulated, 5.0 --> 4.0 ghas: ok. |
| Jul 31 2007 03:04:26:230PM | 1070731014 | Steve Scott | DNB: unmodulated. current a little lower than on shot 13. generally OK. gas: good |

| Jul 31 2007 04:00:42:100PM | 1070731020 | Steve Scott | DNB: one fault, otherwise ok. current is higher. gas: good ------------------- END OF RUN ------------------------- |

| Jul 31 2007 11:54:55:120AM | Steve Wolfe | Load from 1070402013 Change seg1 title to "beam into gas tests NO FIELDS" Zero wires 4 and 6 (not used); the zxl and bz_0 predictors still had f10 f11 and f19 weights. The pg4 puff is on from -1.59sec to 0. Supposedly, this gave what they wanted before. Load into model Load at 31-Jul-2007 11:54:05.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Should be ready for first shot, whenever the beam guys are ready. | |

| Jul 31 2007 01:07:51:440PM | Steve Wolfe | SHot#2: Try again. Got gas this time. Just over 1mTorr on ratiomatic Got beam. Steve is satisfied with puff. | |
