| We are running MP 498 Density peaking at low collisionality
The purpose of the experiment is to Extend data range, in the nu_EFF, q95 plane, for particle transport experiments and to investigate density peaking at low collisionality. Previous work at C-Mod and elsewhere have shown clear evidence of density peaking in H-modes at low collisionality. Data from AUG, C-Mod and JET suggest that the density profile for a low collisionality device like ITER will have a peaking ratio, ne(0)/ We will use the cryopump to help keep the density down. We will try to follow the approach from 1070614 (which was H-mode cryopump studies.) Shot 13 is a good example of what we're look for. In that run, ssep was scanned from slightly negative to slightly positive - hysteresis and a healthy amount of RF power was sufficient to maintain the H-mode. However we want to avoid control problems associated with the ssep control. An option - to be discussed by operators - is to hold the xpoints fixed and move Zcur. 0. Start with The machine should be boronized. The cryopump should be available Ip = 0.7MA Bt = 5.4 T target nl_04 = 0.6e20 1. Once we have established an approach, try to find the lowest density where H-mode is accessible. 2. Drop Ip to 0.5 MA - scan down in density 3. Drop Ip to 0.4 MA - scan down in density 4. At 0.4 MA - raise density in steps until H-mode is lost 5. Raise Ip to 0.85 MA - scan to lowest density We will want some Argon for HIREX, gas puff for IW CXR, DNB for other CXR |

| We had a pretty good day with 28 plasmas
It was not possible to lower the collisionality as far as we wished, nu_eff never got much below 1. However we did get a scan in q95 and beta, so combined with previous runs we should be able to compare scalings with AUG and JET. | It was a good run. There were a few concerns over high OH coax resistance that reached up to 3 uOhms but we kept running and the resistance came down. The cryopump performed very well and so did the ICRF. The ICRF power reached 5 MW briefly and 4 MW for 100 ms on the last shot. There were a large number of H-modes that will provide interesting data for a number of people including two-phase L-H transitions with upper null plasmas. Depending on your definition of a fizzle, there were 29 shots and 29 plasmas, no duds and no errors. One plasma only reached 150 kA so it could be considered a fizzle. The startup worked well otherwise. There were 5 early disruptions at low density due to moly injections. The boronization did not seem all that effective at keeping moly levels low when operating at high RF power and low density.

| Aug 3 2007 09:15:48:550AM | 1070803001 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 1: Began where Ian left off yesterday keeping what was already in the model, which is a 0.6 MA, 5.4 T, 4 x 10^19 m^-2 plasma with a ramp from negative to positive ZCUR between 0.7 and 0.9 s. Changed prepuff to 30 ms duration to account for the cryopump, which is on. Good shot. |

| Aug 3 2007 09:57:23:380AM | 1070803004 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 4: Increased prepuff by 3 ms to 37 ms duration. Increased TF and OH invert times from 2.3 s to 2.4 s. Decreased nl04 to 3 x 10^19 m^-2. |

| Aug 3 2007 11:01:33:063AM | 1070803006 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 6: Changed CLEARIN predictor time from 0.75 to 0.65 s. Disrupted at 0.62 s. |
| Aug 3 2007 11:05:50:053AM | 1070803007 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 7: Reduced RCUR by 2.5 mm throughout the shot to increase the outer gap by 0.5 cm. Good shot but the RF tripped early. |
| Aug 3 2007 11:27:12:953AM | 1070803008 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 8: Raised Ip to 0.7 MA. Good shot, but RF tripped again so the H-mode was short. |
| Aug 3 2007 11:39:12:170AM | 1070803009 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 9: Try again to keep the RF on. OH coax resistance just exceeds 2.5 uOhm.
Good shot but the RF trips again. |
| Aug 3 2007 12:00:27:693PM | 1070803010 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 10: Try again. Disrupted at 0.62 s. OH2 breaker pulled after the disruption.
Delay to check fuses. |
| Aug 3 2007 12:24:17:987PM | 1070803011 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 11: Returned ZCUR ramp to start at 0.7 s and end at 0.9 s. Returned CLEARIN predictor time from 0.65 s to 0.75 s. Good shot. RF stayed up pretty well. OH resistance above 3 uOhms, but Irby says to keep going. |
| Aug 3 2007 12:28:20:633PM | 1070803012 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 12: Reduced nl04 to 2 x 10^19 m^-2. Disrupted at 0.27 s. |
| Aug 3 2007 12:47:29:140PM | 1070803013 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 13: Reloaded segment 4 from shot 11. Then, reduced nl04 after 0.35 s down to 2 x 10^19 m^-2. Increased PG1 gas in segment 1 from 0.017 s to 0.04 s. Good shot.
Cryopump warmed up before the shot so it is surprising that there were no problems with the breakdown. |
| Aug 3 2007 01:06:42:193PM | 1070803014 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 14: Reduced Ip to 0.5 MA. Good shot. L-mode. |
| Aug 3 2007 01:24:14:993PM | 1070803015 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 15: Reduced RCUR by 2.5 mm to increase the outer gap by 5 mm. Turned off dpcs_ftae2. The Active MHD antennas have been off in any case. Good shot. Disrupted just after a pair of Li pellets at 1.7 s. |
| Aug 3 2007 01:39:58:747PM | 1070803016 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 16: Stagger the RF to see if D or E are more responsible for the increased Moly levels. Increase J to give a total of 2 MW throughout. Li pellet injected at 1.71 s. Good shot. Moly radiation appears to come from all three antennas and depends on the total RF power level. |
