| Session Leader Plan for Tuesday 1070807
MP503 Scaling of the L-H Transition at Low Density This run requires high ICRF power and reproducible wall conditions. So, we would like an overnight ECDC in helium Monday night at the usual settings. Load shot 1070803028 to use its startup segment 1 and then load segment 2 from 1070612025 and turn on segment 2 and turn off segment 4 and then recalculate all magnetics predictors for use without F19 in segment 2. Change Ip to 0.9 MA and nl04 to 6 x 10^19 m^-2. Ramp the ICRF power from 0.5 s to 1.5 s from 0.5 MW to 2.5 MW. Then, scan the density from shot to shot from 5 to 4 to 3 x 10^19 m^-2 taking two shots at each density if necessary. Then, reduce Ip to 0.6 MA and repeat the density scan. Then, increase Ip to 1.2 MA and repeat the density scan. At the lower densities, the ICRF ramp will probably need to go up to 3.5 MW to find the H-mode threshold. The idea is to map out the density dependence of the H-mode threshold for each plasma current, particularly at low and moderate densities. If time remains after all this is done, we will repeat each current at slightly higher densities of 7 and 8 x 10^19 m^-2. |

| The run started late because of software problems with the machine cooling so that we did not get the first shot until 10:00 am. There were a number of disruptions and 11 fizzles so that we ended up with only 11 good shots with clear L-H transitions. This meant that we had very little time to explore all of the densities and currents that we wanted to run and no time to check for reproducibility of any condition. Nonetheless, we did manage to get L-H threshold points for several densities at 0.6 MA, 0.9 MA, and 1.2 MA. This gave a fairly clear result that the minimum density for the threshold around nebar = 1 x 10^20 m^-3, which is somewhat higher than previous results that were around 8 x 10^19 m^-3. Because we did not boronize, there were certainly rather high moly radiation levels for all of the shots, so that might explain why the low density limit is somewhat higher than previously. There appears to be no current dependence to the low density limit in that all three currents more or less overlayed each other in (Ptot - dW/dt)/Pscaling vs nebar. Plotting the same relative threshold power vs n/n_G clearly separated out the low current points indicating that there was no clear dependence on the Greenwald density limit. The experiment should be repeated with a good boronization and perhaps with between-shot boronization to determine if reduced moly radiation would change the result at all. |

| After a delayed start (RSView server problem delayed cooling), engineering systems worked well for most of the day.
We had significant problems with fizzles today. Playing with fill did not seem to help much. Shot 23 fizzled because the cryopump stopped pumping deuterium just before the shot. We ended the day with 4 beam into gas (no fields) for MSE. Summary: plasmas 18 fizzles 12 beam into gas 4 total cycles 34 |

| Aug 7 2007 05:30:25:443PM | 1070807031 | Steve Scott | New experiment: beam-into-gas, NO FIELDS. Measure spectrum from beam thru MSE optics, to determine the Doppler shift and thereby infer the angle between the MSE sightline and the DNB. This will be a repeat of shot 1070803032. torus pressure about 3.0 mTorr (D2). First two shots will have the MSE linear polarizer left in situ (while we wait for oxygen to return to the test cell). Result: good dnb. got the same gas puff as 1070803032, except we got a little extra gas (up to an additional 0.5 mTorr) starting at 0.7 sec. Overall, this is an acceptable member of the scan. next: repeat but withoout the extra Ninja puff ... Note: we got a DNB pulse in excess of the nominal maximum of 1.50 sec. Need to check with Dexter about why the controls allowed this. We had defined a maximum 'on' time of 1400 ms, but the controls seemed to pay more attention to the defined on/off time. |
| Aug 7 2007 05:36:00:420PM | 1070807032 | Steve Scott | good gas but DNB faulted at 1.37 sec. |
| Aug 7 2007 05:42:36:367PM | 1070807033 | Steve Scott | This is the last dnb-into-gas shot with the MSE linear polarizer left in place. Result: DNB is correct duration, but suffered one fault. Overall, this is acceptable. Good gas pulse. |
| Aug 7 2007 05:52:03:970PM | 1070807034 | Steve Scott | Prior to this shot, we removed the linear polarizer from MSE. We expect the signal strength to the spectrometer to increase by a factor 2 - 2.5 result: good dnb, good gas. This is the final shot of this micro-expermient. |
