MP506: H-modes with cryopumping in USN Run B: normal field direction SL: Jerry Hughes PO: Jim Irby This run is intended to complete the evaluation of pedestal and global H-mode response to cryopumping. It will be run in USN topology to maximize particle flux to the pumping slots. Requirements: **Overnight boronization as for run 1070803: rmin/rmax/rdwell 60/80/75 scan 20/120 foreline pressure 40mTorr **Diagnostics Edge and core Thomson, ECE diagnostics, CXRS, bolometer arrays, PCI, reflectometry, Hirex **Gas NINJA plenum loaded with 10psi D2 Argon puff: 50ms at 0.3s (Argon at 1psi) **ICRF at least 3MW available flat waveforms from 0.7 to 1.5s **cryopump available by second shot Shot sequence: A. 800kA shots 1. First shot should be a near repeat of 1070614028 (5.4T, 800kA, USN). Raise target nl04 to 1e20. Apply 3MW of ICRF heating. Pump WARM. 2. Repeat 1. with pump COLD. 3. Repeat 2. with target nl04=8e19, pump COLD. 4. Repeat 3. with target adjusted, based on results of 2--3. Pump COLD. B. 600kA 1. Lower Ip to 600kA, nl04-->8e19. Prf=3MW. Pump WARM. 2. Repeat 1. with pump COLD. 3. Repeat 2. with target nl04=6e19, pump COLD. 4. Repeat 3. with target adjusted, based on results of 2--3. Pump COLD. C. 400kA 1. Lower Ip to 400kA, nl04-->6e19. Prf=3MW. Pump WARM 2. Repeat 1. with pump COLD. 3. Repeat 2. with target nl04=4e19, pump COLD. 4. Repeat 3. with target adjusted, based on results of 2--3. Pump COLD. If time remains, proceed to D,E: D. Choose a promising low collisionality pumped H-mode target from A--C. and repeat with maximum availabe RF. E. Choose a low Ip, low density pumped target from B--C. Rerun with a current ramp up to 1MA from 1.1 to 1.5s, to see if low density H-mode can be maintained with Te,PED rise. |

| This run was intended to assess cryopumping in USN H-modes, with field in the
standard direction. Shot 1 went as programmed, though with a MARFE and uncontrolled density rise. There was no ICRF and no H-mode. There was also, it turned out, a TF ground fault indication that we didn't ask for. The run was scrubbed in order to locate the problem. |

| This run was proceeded by an overnight boronization.
Shot 001 looked very good, but had to stop run to investigate a ground fault indication on the TF. |

| Aug 8 2007 10:13:18:637AM | 1070808001 | Jerry Hughes | Roaring start. Pump WARM.
Ip, Bt, shape look good. Big MARFE early, and density takes off (nl04>1.2e20). No significant RF. No H-mode. Cell access to diagnose and fix various problems. Next shot: Retry with pump cold. Try to get better density control. Update: TF instrumentation is being checked thoroughly to find source of apparent ground fault on shot 1. The delay will be a long one. |

import seg 3 of 1070614028 into seg 2 import seg 2 of 1070523021 into seg 3 seg 1 is toggled on seg 2 is toggled on seg 3 off recal of magnetics done for seg 2, 3, and 4 (pre f19 fault shots) pg1 in seg 2 from 100 to 50 ms (Argon) loaded to tree nl_04 request to 1e20 /m^2 loaded to tree prefill to 20 ms from 32 ms (no cryopump for shot 1) loaded to tree About 9 minutes into the cryopump cooldown we had a burst of nitrogen from 3e-9Torr to 4e-8Torr mass 28 on RGA-1. Mass 14 also went up. No change on other lines. IGT went from 8.1e-8 Torr to 2e-7 Torr. After the pump cools down the basepressure still dropped down to low 10-8 scale. Asked Andy to make sure we had extended tf and oh delays and inversion times to protect oh coax plasma into rampdown --- large marfe Jerry is happy with plasma shape (but not marfe) cell entry to open CXRS shutter DNB is ready to go |
| Aug 8 2007 12:38:19:837PM | 1070808001 | Jim Irby | We lost fuses in TF supply and also have currents of up to 80 A on the TF ground fault Pearson starting at 3.902 s. TF current was below 20kA at that point.
current also seen on secondary Pearson on TF ground supply current glitch seen about 3.93 s. Asked Alternator to shut down at around 12:30 since it is unlikely we will find and fix the problem in the next couple of hours. |
