Alfven Cascade studies with ICRH and LHCD The purpose of these experiemnts is to investigate the excitation of Alfven Cascades in the current ramp phase, utilizing ICRH for heating and a fast ion source, and LHCD to maintain a reversed shear q-profile. With the help of ICRF for early heating, the LH system will be operated at mid and high n|| to achieve off-axis current drive. These experiments will adjust the relative timing of the ICRH and LHCD to try to maintain q>1 for as long as possible. ---------------------------- SETUP: target: 1070619006 Try to smooth the initial density rise as in shots 1070712017, 1070626017 and 1070712006. RF will turn on at 0.080 seconds and be off by 0.700 seconds. We will run plasmas to 1.5 seconds to allow MSE some time for calibrations - try to achieve steady density throughout the flattop and from 1.0 to 1.5 seconds. ICRF: all transmitters run-on by 8:30am LH: 90 degree ideal phasing, normal field, current direction waveform: step from 0 to 0.3 MW at 0.150 seconds, pulse length of 0.4 seconds, 75 kW per klystron. Set grill at 1.5 mm behind limiter. Diagnostics: 1) PCI and magnetics digitized at 10 MHz 2) Thomson and ECE required 3) Hirex requested with 1 or 2 ms integration time. No initial Ar puffing, can try Ar in the flattop 4) MSE will run in the Ohmic flattop after the RF is off. ---------------------------- SHOT SEQUENCE: 001: ICRF on at 0.080 seconds (E and J only), ramp to 2.0 MW at 0.100 seconds, full power to 0.700 seconds. *NO* LH on this shot. 002-005: increase ICRF power to 3.0 MW. Adjust plasma geometry as needed, perhaps running inner-nose limited. Increase rate of current ramp to reach 600 kA at 0.100 seconds. 006-007: Try running at 600 and 500 kA max plasma current. 008-013: Use 800 kA discharge and apply LHCD at 0.3 MW. Attempt to increase LH power to 0.4 MW or beyond. Move LH start time to 0.100 seconds. 014-015: Attempt to couple LH starting at 0.020 seconds. 016-023: Change LH to 120 degree phasing. Initial LH operation at 0.3 MW, turn on at 0.150 seconds, pulse length of 0.4 seconds. Over the next 7 next 7 shots, move the start time of LH earlier, and increase power to 0.4 or 0.5 MW. 024-025: Repeat best perfromance from prior 8 shots at 600 kA. |

Disruptions were a present factor in initial operation, until shot 008. To try to reduce the impurity concentration, we tried pulling the plasma off the inner wall, this seemed to help. ICRF systems ran well, reaching 4 MW in the ramp on shot 014. LH experienced some troubles, losing an optical arc detection on klystron #10. Turned off the third crate and reduced power to about 240 kW. Main results are that cascades seem to be killed by the presence of LH. Simialar shots with and without LH show significant changes in RSAE activity, though TAE activity is, at first observation, unaffected. Initial results from hard x-ray data show that LH current is being driven on-axis in all cases. This may explain the loss of RSAEs. The slight amount of central reversed shear may be destroyed by the on-axis current drive. AE activity was never as clear today as it was on 1040406. Possible reasons are the plasma positioning on the inner wall and impurity concentration in the ramp-up. We did no run a plasma with LH operating prior to the ICRH. This would be a useful case to compare to, as we would be able to test if the current drive is capable of being localized off-axis in the absence of ICRF, or if it will always be centrally localized during the ramp because of lower temperatures and densities. |

| C-Mod ran well today. There was an apparent EF1L power supply problem on the first shot which resulted in a dud. Engineering investigation did not identify a problem, and the failure did not recur. A computer problem caused the loss of one shot. ICRF and LH difficulties caused the loss of a couple of hours in the afternoon.
No significant changes were made to segment 1 during the day. There were several disruptions. One (006) was associated with molybdenum influx. For the others, there was no measurement due to spectrometer HV shutdown during the shot. The disruptions were still useful for the SL since they occured after the end of the experimental period which was from 0.1 s to 0.2 s. Although requested in the run plan, ECDC was not run overnight prior to the run. Score card 17 plasmas (003,005,006,008,010,012,013,014,015,017,018,019,020,021,022,023,024) 04 fizzles (004,007,009,011) 03 engineering (001,002, 016) 24 total |
