| MP #495 a
Summary for shots 033 through 035. The plan was for these remaining shots was to run a combination of LH and ICRH in the current ramp, this time with the LH preceding the ICRH. This was a follow-up on 1070823, where due to multiple cell accesses, we did not have time to complete this scan. For these shots, LH was turned on at 0.100 seconds, and the ICRH at 0.150 seconds. Shot 033 had 400 kW of LH power at 90 degree phasing. The PCI data system did not acquire data during the time window of interetest, so o observation could be made from this. Magnetics showed no signs of Alfven Cascades, though some TAEs were present following the ICRH. A disruption occured later in the shot. Shot 034 was a fizzle. Shot 035 had 400 kW of LH power at 105 degree phasing, an early trip cut the LH power from 0.10 to 0.12 seconds, and was then steady from 0.12 to 0.15 seconds. The PCI system (this time with the correct time window), saw no signs of Alfven cascades before or after the ICRH was turned on. The case with LH at 105 degree phasing (shot 035) had a sawtooth entry time about 50 ms earlier than in the 90 degree case (shot 033). Direct comparison of the role of LH in this is not entirely clear due to the loss of power in the first 30 ms of the LH pulse on shot 035. Investigations with the hard x-ray system also show that the fast-electron density is not hollow, suggesting that the current is being driven on-axis. |

| MP499A Parametric Decay and Density Limit for LHEH/LHCD
SL: Yuichi Takase PO: Joe Snipes The purpose of this experiment was to investigate the dependence of parametric decay instability on edge (inside/outside the LCFS) density and temperature under ITER relevant conditions, i.e., in diverted configuration at ITER magnetic field. Comparison was made between L-mode and H-mode conditions, and for different LH wavenumber spectra. These experimental results provide important information for determining the frequency for the ITER LHCD system. Frequency spectra near the LH pump frequency (for lower and upper sidebands) and near zero frequency (for low frequency quasi-modes) were obtained by splitting the signal from a midplane RF electrostatic probe on the LH grill and sweeping two spectrum analyzers over 20ms. In addition, frequency integrated RF wave power was measured using the NE (northeast) tip of the A-side reciprocating Langmuir probe to obtain the radial profile of RF wave power (passband of the filter included both the pump and the sideband LH waves). This was a very productive run. A number of interesting results were obtained. Two 100ms LH pulses, 1st without ICRF (L-mode) and 2nd with ICRF (H-mode), were used. A density scan with LH at 90 degree current drive phasing (n_parallel = 2.3) indicated that interaction with electrons disappears around nel_04 = 0.6e20m-2. Intense parametric decay is not observed until the density is around nel_04 = 0.9e20m-2, substantially higher than where interaction with electrons disappears. For the same density, parametric decay is weaker in H-mode, and the spectral shape indicates that the maximum growth rate occurs at a region where the local temperature is higher. A similar result was observed at 60 degree phasing. Unfortunately poor LH coupling prevented injection of LH power with high wavenumber (120 degree phasing) at low densities. At the same denisity, waves with smaller wavenumber (less accessible waves) tend to excite stronger parametric decay. A-side reciprocating Langmuir probe detected large amplitude RF signal at low densities. The wave amplitude decreased rapidly at densities nel_04 > 0.9e20m-2. The radial profile of RF wave amplitude was not monotonic, but increased and decreased during a radial scan, indicating that the wave field is localized radially. The localization was very pronounced at densities around nel_04 = 1.0e20m-2 (shot 011, for example). There were difficulties coupling LH power into low and high density discharges. Magnetic field scan and comparison between limiter and divertor discharges were not performed. Further analysis is in progress. |

| It was a good run. The machine and both RF systems worked quite well. Startups were fairly reliable including a fizzle following each major disruption. Parametric decay instabilities were observed on a number of shots except at very low density, as expected. The last few shots were also devoted to current rise with combined LH+ICRF and a number of TAEs were observed, though no Alfven cascades were observed. There were 35 shots with 30 plasmas and 5 fizzles.
