MP 496 High Performance Operation at Ip > 1.2 MA

SL: E. Marmar
PO: S. Wolfe

The purpose of these experiments is to explore the confinement, transport, pedestal scaling and divertor behavior as plasma current is scanned above 1.2 MA using hydrogen minority heating, with maximum power available. Ideally, these experiments will be carried out using the nominal ITER shape, with a target to reach 1.6 MA, which should yield the ITER q_95 at the ITER magnetic field. If we can access these parameters with 6 MW of input power (ICRF + Ohmic), and good H-Mode confinement (H89 ~ 1.8), the resulting plasma will have the same absolute pressure and β as the baseline ITER H-Mode discharge target. Exploration of this territory should significantly expand our parameter ranges for studies of confinement (particularly scaling with Ip), the H-mode pedestal, including ELM character, and spontaneous rotation. These experiments will directly contribute to one of the C-Mod plain English goals for FY2008, Confinement at High Plasma Current. Elucidation of these results for extrapolation to ITER will be a major goal of these studies.

Run Plan

Overnight boronization prior to the run. See the PO_Plan for other engineering setup information.

IP = 1.2 MA, nl_04 target = 1.1 e20 m-2, establish EDA H-Mode at PRF = 3.5 MW.

IP = 1.5 MA, nl_04 target = 1.4 e20, PRF = 3.5 MW.
If promising, increase RF power to max available at 1.5 MA, in .75 MW steps

IP = 1.6 MA, nl_04 target = 1.5 e20, PRF = 3.5 MW.
If promising, increase RF power to max available at 1.6 MA, in 0.75 MW steps

If time permits, go back to IP = 1.35 MA, nl_04 target = 1.3 e20, PRF = 3.5 MW, to help fill in the current scan data.

If we have trouble getting EDA H-mode, increase target density and/or raise toroidal field to 5.7 tesla.

We'll start the day with the cryopump on, to try to keep the edge pressure down for the ICRF.

We'll use between-shot boronization during the day if we think the overnight boronization is starting to wear off.

Physop Plan
-------------
The miniproposal calls for starting from 1040127010. I went through
the setup process starting from 1040127010 for the
MP#362 run on 1070517, (and screwed it up badly by not doing a build
before saving). That one had elongation backed off to 1.7 and current
down to 1.35MA. Since this was before f19 died, it will need recalculation
as well, but I won't have to reinvent everything. This shot was saved
as 1070517000 in my scratch area. The notes from that setup are:
Start with programming from 1040127010 segment 2 (and recalculate magnetic
predictors, including Ip; acknowledge warnings about DPCS tree features).
Put B21_PROJ feedback on wire 9, in place of "bolofeed":
  1. In EDIT_WIRE screen, Load wire from a suitable recent source
  2. On V#01-16 screen, zero the ACOIL_CUR waveform
  3. Integrator Gates: Change start of C gate to 0.2sec

Move fast ZCUR feedback from wire 10 back to wire 3:
  1. In Edit_Wire screen on wire 3, load wire from wire 10
  2. Change derivative gain from to 5.0, P gain to 2.5
  3. Zero wire 10.

Reduce Ip program from 1.65 to 1.35

Reduce CLEARIN program from +.005 to -0.005 (back off elongation)

Increase IC_EF4U program from 2000 to 3500A

Change Ref 9-12 from "Ip" to "10"

I propose to start from seg2 of 1070517000 (load the whole shot, then
import seg1 (and 3 and 4 from recent shots), recalculate magnetics
predictors, drop current to 1.2MA, increase nl04 target from 8e19 to
1e20. Based on a recent 1.2MA shot, change RCUR to .659 and CLEARIN to -.002
which gave 1cm outer gap and 7mm inner gap, with zcur=-.009 instead of 0.
That shot also had ZXU=+.05 instead of +.02. Comparison with shots at lower
current suggest we should be using an RCUR offset of ~10000a-m (of some sign?).

Assuming we have cryopump ready to go on shot#1, increase PG4 puff to 32msec.

Note also that there is a pulse on output 19 (diborane piezo) that needs
to be removed.

Tune shot for shape and gaps. Increase elongation to taste.
Get RF on as soon as possible.Aim for EDA H-mode using Prf=3.5MW
Things to adjust, depending on results:
  a) Ip gain switch at 0.6 sec (delay it for volt demand)
  b) CLEARIN, RCUR for gaps
  c) ZCUR (make negative to reduce total elongation)
  d) ZXU (make more positive to reduce total elongation)
Tuning the starting point should take 3-5 shots.

Increase current to 1.5MA, elongation to 1.75 (if it's not already there),
density to nl04= 1.25e20; still at Prf=3.5MW. Perhaps do this in two steps,
e.g. 1.35MA and kappa=1.7 first. NOte that may need to move rcur in as I raise
Ip.
Things to try (hopefully won't need all of them):
 Equilibrium:
  a) Raise IC_EF4U program to 4000 (or even 4500) as current increases
  b) Slow down or delay CLEARIN, elongation changes relative to current rise.
  c) Avoid voltage saturation due to too rapid current rise.
  d) Consider shortening the Ip flattop to avoid power supply current limits
 Stability:
  e) increase slow ZCUR derivative gain (from 0.7 to 2.5, probably not all at
once), monitoring vertical stability traces - response to slow branch
  f) increase P gain on IC_EF4, and/or decrease P gain on EF2_by_EF4 to try to
suppress EF2 oscillation contribution to slow branch of Zcur instability
  g) Tweak fast ZCUR gains to suppress fast branch of vertical mode, if needed
 Locked modes:
  h) Watch out for early locked modes. Consider slowing down current ramp if
     these appear to be present
  i) Increase density to combat locked modes later in pulse.

If promising, increase RF power to max available, in .5MW steps

If we're still alive, increase current to 1.6MA, kappa=1.85 (ITER shape,
more or less).

We explored a range of plasma currents (1.2 to 1.5 MA) with significant ICRF power. At the lower currents, we had some decent shots, although the RF was not steady for any. Probably the best shots were 10, 11 and 12 at 1.35 MA. All of the higher current shots disrupted before, during or shortly after the ICRF heating phase.

As we have seen in the past, the confinement (relative to ITER-89 L-mode scaling) in the ohmic L-mode phase decreases with increasing current. At 1.5 MA, it was below .6 (shot 14). At 1.45 MA, it was around 0.7 (shots 15, 17, 18 ,19 20, 22). In H-mode, H_89 does increase, to as high as 1.2 (shot 20).

After banging away at 1.45 MA, we went back to 1.35 MA, to see how reproducible things were (the boronization was clearly wearing off, but it was too late in the day to consider between-shot boronization). Radiated power was up compared to the earlier shots (shot 26 compared to shot 12, for example) at this current(perhaps 50% on dPrad/dt just after L to H).

On the lost shot (29) we increased the target density. The plasma was more EDA-like, RF was steady at 3 MW, and this was the highest stored energy shot of the day. W_tot reaches 223 kJ (H_89 ~ 1.4), and was still rising when the RF trips and there is a back transition to L-mode.

Physop summary for Wed, 29-Aug-2007
MP#496 High performance operation at Ip>1.2MA
SL: Marmar
PO: wolfe
EO: Pierson, Pfeiffer, Parkin

The goal was to get high power (above 3.5MW) data at 1.5 to 1.6MA.
We were unsuccessful in running discharges into rampdown above 1.35MA,
and the rf was only marginally successful at getting power over 3.5MW,
and in fact had to reduce to 3MW later in the day to keep from faulting.

We did get (relatively) non-disruptive high elongation ITER-like shapes
at 1.2MA, 1.35MA. These were near double null and pretty much filled the
available space in the machine. Similar shapes at 1.5MA (and 1.45MA)
disrupted, some just into rampdown (which started at 1.15sec) and some
in flattop. I did make a small tweak to the fast zcur gains
(P from 2.5->3, D from 5->5.5) and increased the IC_EF4U gain,
which seemed to help the slow vertical mode some but did not cure
the disruptions which followed the H-mode phase. The disruptions did
tend to end as vde's, but I suspect that this was not the original cause.
I think these plasmas were too close to boundaries and were contacting as the
control got shaky around transitions and rf faults. We tried raising
q95 comfortably above 3 by raising B to 5.6T, but this didn't help either.
The nominal inner gap was around 5mm, and the outer gap around 1cm; could
have actually been closer, especially outside.

We got a number of shots with stored energy above 200kJ, but no new
records. The H-modes were all at high density (cutting off the ECE),
and had rather low H-factors. Prad was an obvious problem.

The cryopump was used all day and seemed to help the ICRF, although
we can't know since we didn't try a comparison shot without it. We
were running quite high target density (up to 1.5e20) and managed
not to exceed the neutral pressure limit on J antenna.

These shots all had some injections and radiated power was not low
even at the start of the day, and the boronization was clearly
getting worse as the day went on. Rate of rise of Prad was at least
50% higher at the end of the day than on similar targets around
shot 10-12.

delay final step to 9 from 0.65 to .7
Disrupted again at .74sec
Looks like the right gap is bigger than expected.
It's still getting a big jerk from the final Ip gain switch, now
at 0.7sec, and ends up going vertically.

Aug 29 2007 01:23:56:990PM1070829015Steve Wolfe
Shot#15: move rcur back out from .656 to .657
delay current flattop from .5 to .6
back Ip down to 1.45MA, just in case it's integral q problem
disrupted at .95sec, in hmode

Getting lots of vertical thrashes. Looks like the low frequency
branch. Try raising zcur3 P gain from 2.5 to 3, D from 5 to 5.5

Aug 29 2007 01:35:19:427PM1070829016Steve Wolfe
Shot#16: Try raising zcur3 P gain from 2.5 to 3, D from 5 to 5.5
Raise TF to 5.6T (156kA)
Raise EF4 gain from 2 to 6 after 0.5sec (contra ef2_by_ef4
fizzle; big CIII signal, no burnout on halpha; got over 50kA

Next: drop pg4 by 2ms

Aug 29 2007 01:55:46:847PM1070829017Steve Wolfe
Shot #17: dropped pg 4 from 36 to 34ms
but pressure went up to .058 - fizzle.
Possible cryo burp. Try again

Aug 29 2007 04:06:21:093PM1070829018Steve Wolfe
Shot #18: dropped pg 4 from 36 to 34ms
Before this shot cmodws30 froze and had to be rebooted the hard way
(pulling the plug)

plasma disrupts at 1.1sec
Looks like a lot of injections, MHD visible on soft xrays and ece
I think the vertical problem is more stable, but can't really tell;
it does go up eventually.

Next: raise nl04 to 1.5e20

Aug 29 2007 02:19:43:100PM1070829019Steve Wolfe
Shot #19: raise nl04 to 1.5e20
plasma disrupts at 1.17sec

Next: back off zxu, reduce double nullness

Aug 29 2007 02:40:52:307PM1070829020Steve Wolfe
Shot #20:ZXU from .03 to .035
small tweaks to ranpdown clearin, rxl, ef4

fizzle, after nearly an hour delay.

drop pg4 another 2ms

Aug 29 2007 03:41:47:493PM1070829022Steve Wolfe
Shot #22: pg4 from 34 to 32ms
Zxl from -.0175 to -.02,
zcur from 0 to -.003, tweak clearin in rampdown

disruption at 1.0sec
got to 196kJ, kappa=1.77, q95=3.25

Next: raise slow zcur P gain

Aug 29 2007 03:47:37:597PM1070829023Steve Wolfe
Shot #22: Zcur2 P gain from .75 to 1.5
disrupts at .85sec, looks worse.
Slow mode is worse, so that's the wrong way on zcur gain.

Next: retreat to shot#12 (1.35MA)

Aug 29 2007 04:00:38:303PM1070829024Steve Wolfe
Shot #23: reload seg2 from shot#12
drop pg4 from 32 to 31ms
fizzle. CIII high, no Halpha burnout.

Next: down to 30ms

Aug 29 2007 04:17:23:627PM1070829025Steve Wolfe
Shot #25: pg4 from 31 to 30ms
Still working on the repeat of shot#12 (1.35MA)

plasma full length, unsteady H-modes
Not much success for rf, wmhd<160kJ
q95=3.4,kappa=1.83, close to DN

Aug 29 2007 04:27:17:500PM1070829026Steve Wolfe
Shot #26: repeat
plasma full length
Long H-mode, but RF dies early (except for D
gets to 212kJ during rf,

Next: try one with no argon

Aug 29 2007 04:40:19:097PM1070829027Steve Wolfe
Shot #27: repeat with no argon, Yijun will try to keep rf on
disrupts at 1.1sec
gets to 209kJ,

Next: drop pg4, drop power on J

Aug 29 2007 04:51:20:710PM1070829028Steve Wolfe
Shot #28: pg4 from 30 to 28ms
plasma full length
wmhd=198kJ, prf~3MW, somewhat steadier
Prad high and going up.

Next: raise target density

Aug 29 2007 05:06:20:560PM1070829029Steve Wolfe
Shot #29: nl04 from 1.3 to 1.45e20
