| Session Leader Plan Morning Thursday 8/30/07 MP: 504 Day 2
Purpose: To obtain forward field L-H transitions at matching plasma conditions to the reversed field conditions run on 1070726 (MO 504 day 1). USN L-H transitions will also be attempted at the same plasma conditions. 5 hour Boronization is requested the evening before this run. Toroidal Field: 5.4 T Plasma Current: 0.8MA Working Gas Species: D2 Density: nl04 = 0.7-0.9*10^20 m^-2 Use the following reference equilibria: LSN 1070531015 and USN 1070525026 Auxiliary Systems RF: Yes. 0.5-2.5+MW DNB: Yes. Current: 6+Amps Timing: 20ms off 40ms on starting time between .4-.5s (will be varied), alternate timing 15ms off 30ms on, 15ms off 45ms on. NINJA puffing as necessary for CXRS, Argon as necessary for core rotation measurements Desired Diagnostics: All CXRS (DNB/GPI), Edge and Core TS, ECE, scanning probes, bolometry, Hirex and all its relations, Fast Magnetics, PCI, Reflectometry Shot sequence plan: If threshold power is known then the RF ramp to find threshold power can be eliminated in favor of first requested RF ramp. One good shot is required at each condition, the second requested shot at each condition is to adjust DNB timing in case the beam timing is unfavroable with respect to the L-H transition timing. Shots 1: LSN, Ip=800kA, nl04=0.7*10^20m^-2, RF Ramp .5s-1.5s 0.5MW-2MW Shots 2-3: LSN, Ip=800kA, nl04=0.7*10^20m^-2, RF Ramp .5s-1.5s 0.5MW-Just over threshold power Shots 4-5: LSN, Ip=800kA, nl04=0.7*10^20m^-2, Flat RF Pulse.5s-1.5s Just at threshold Shots 6: LSN, Ip=800k,A nl04=0.9*10^20m^-2. ,RF Ramp 0.5s-1.5s 0.5MW-2.0MW Shots 7-8: LSN, Ip=800kA, nl04=0.9*10^20m^-2, RF Ramp .5s-1.5s 0.5MW-Just over threshold power Shots 9-10: LSN, Ip=800kA, nl04=0.9*10^20m^-2, Flat RF Pulse.5s-1.5s Just at threshold Switch to USN Repeat Above shot sequence for USN |

| MP 502: HIREX-SR Calibration Plasmas
SL: M. Reinke PO: J. Irby The purpose of this experiment is to create calibration plasmas for the new HIREXSR diagnostic. Strong argon puffing into an ICRF heated, high density, USN L-mode should allow highly radiative dischrages dominated by argon emission. Diagnostics: All possible Te and ne profile diagnostics (GPC1 and GPC2, edge/core TS, TCI, FRC). CHERS specialy configured. Beam timing: 100 ms on, 30 ms off B-SIDE lower pressure: 1.0 psi of Argon (increase to 1.5 psi as requested) Start with cryopump warm for first shot Cell access to change views for the VISPEC diagnostic. Shots 1-2: Locked Mode for velocity calibration. Ohmic LSN, 1 MA, nl04=0.5e20. Turn off A-coils at 1.0 to let locked mode develop. Like 1070621018. Argon puff for 150 ms at 0.3. Afterwards, restore A-coils to normal. TURN ON CRYOPUMP Shots 3-4: Establish USN, 1 MA, pumped L-mode with 3 MW ICRF at nl04=1.0e20. Load 1070601031 but change target nl04 and maintain density control throughout shot. Use inner-wall NINJA (1070525031) to aid in fueling. Set argon puff to 75 ms at 0.3 seconds. Shots 5-11: Increase argon pressure to 1.5 psi and puff length to 150 ms at 0.3 seconds. Continue increasing main ion density and number/duration of argon puffs until collisionality ( > 10), radiated power (p_ar/p_rad > 0.5) and count rate (0.5-1.0e5) goals are reached. Shots 12-13: Decrease RF power to 1.5 MW. Do not repeat if disruption Shots 14-end: Increase RF power to maximum available. If CHERS not seeing any argon signal, increase argon puff. |

| 502: HIREX-SR Calibration Plasmas
Got most of what I needed for the MP and some new results. Started off with locked modes to get a velocity calibration which was a late addition. These worked well for HIREX-SR and also allowed S. Angelini and S. Wolfe to test out a locked mode predictor in real time. Moved to the USN plasmas and was initially getting H-modes until the input and output power were adjust by lowering the RF and increasing the duration of the argon gas puff. Quickly found out that the cryopump can pump a steady-state argon puff creating a steady state PRAD. The B_SIDE_LOWER pressure was incresed from 1.0 psi to 2.75 psi over a number of shots to increase the absolute level of PRAD over a factor of two. But we had to increase the RF power to prevent disruptions so PRAD/PTOT was evolving over the afternoon. Clearly met the goal of making an discharge with argon as the dominating emissivity source. As a bonus, the demonstration of the cryopump should allow similar experiments with other recyling gases. Was able to get the argon count rate above 0.5e5 as desired. After meeting this goal, HIREX-SR reduced integration time and were able to resolve points inside sawteeth with good SNR. Was not able to achieve high collisionality at high count rates. As soon as Te gets too low, the plasma just disrupts. Made an effort to get very high Te for HIREX-SR Te measurements but RF >=4.0 MW started to "melt" limiters and spew Mo into the plasma increasing PRAD, decreasing Te and causing disruptions (for the last two shots). Also was able to see beam-based CHERS emission from He-like argon on VISPEC which was a welcome suprise. UT says they observed it as well but with worse SNR than VISPEC. |

| MP 504
The purpose of this run was two fold. 1)To obtain, for comparison purposes, forward field LSN 'normal' L-H transitions at the same plasma parameters as were used for the "slow" or "two-phase" L-H transitions obtained during the first run day dedicated to this experiment (1070726) and 2) to obtain forward field slow transitions at the same plasma parameters by operating in the unfavorable drift direction (USN) just at threshold power. Both of these goals were accomplished though it is unclear how good a comparison the LSN transitions will be. Although we obtained these transitions, using the same plasma shape, density, and current, the quality of the H-modes was much poorer than those obtained on 1070726, and despite boronization the radiation levels were v. high. Shots 1-6 and 15-17 were attemps at getting these comparison shots with shots 5, 6, and 17 being the best. Throughout the day we had trouble controlling the density due to outgassing from the RF antennas, which did not improve significantly as the day went on. But eventually, we did obtain L-H transitions with various RF configuration at plasma line averaged densities beteen nl04= 0.7 - 1.0 * 10^20 m^-2. Shots 8-14 and 18 were USN shots aimed at getting "two-phase" L-H transitions. Shots 12,13 and 18 were by far the best. We had trouble both with density control, and also finding the RF threshold power which insisted on being a bit elusive throughout the day. The CX siganl was low throughout the day, whether this is due to less than stellar DNB performance or beam attenuation by neutrals before entering the plasma is unclear. |

| The machine ran extremely well today. I used the last shot from 1070829 for startup and only adjusted the gas twice (20 ms w/o cryopump, 30 ms with it) all day. We ran with both LSN and USN plasmas as part of the LH transition study and calibration of HIREX-SR. The rf performed beautifully all day with clean pulses up to 4 MW. The cryopump ran reliably for every shot it was required and we were able to maintain very a very flat density of about 1e20/m^2 nl04 with about 120 Torr-l of deuterium injected along the with 2 or 3 Torr-l of argon. |

Good first shot. Got transition around 0.9MW. Next shot same plasma parameters, change ICRF to 1s ramp from 0.5-1.2MW starting at 0.5s. Good poloidal CX signal, mediocre toroidal CX signal. beam current around 5.2-5.3A, hope to get it at least to 5.5amps. Photon2 2 failed on first test shot, worked just fine on first plasma shot. |
| Aug 30 2007 09:25:46:777AM | 1070830002 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip = 800Ka, nl04=0.7x10^20 m^-2
Got transition again at 0.9MW. Better CX signal, beam current still low. Next shot same plasma parameters, change ICRF to flat pulse just under threshold power. Good CX data in H-mode. |
| Aug 30 2007 09:40:14:033AM | 1070830003 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip = 800Ka, nl04=0.7x10^20 m^-2 Flat RF pulse just under 0.9MW
messy shot, radiation still high trying again next shot. delaying RF until 0.7s, and reducing power just a little bit. Also increasing Bt a little to adjust Amanda's view. |
| Aug 30 2007 09:57:08:620AM | 1070830004 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip = 800Ka, nl04=0.7x10^20 m^-2 Flat RF pulse just under 0.9MW
Best shot so far. Next shot, going to nl04=0.9x10^20m^-2, with a flat RF pulse at .7s at 1MW, guessing at threshold power. |
| Aug 30 2007 10:12:28:537AM | 1070830005 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip = 800Ka, nl04=0.9x10^20 m^-2 Flat RF pulse just under 0.8MW
Density was a little high during the pre-H-mode region, try again, lowering density request to 0.8x10^20 m^-2, to get the .9 before transition. Same RF. |
| Aug 30 2007 10:18:39:153AM | 1070830006 | Rachael Mcdermott | Ip = 800Ka, nl04=0.9x10^20 m^-2 Flat RF pulse just under 0.8MW
Density was still a little high, but want to switch to USN shots, to make sure we get those, and come back to LSN afterwards if there is time. Switch the USN. |
| Aug 30 2007 10:33:20:113AM | 1070830007 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA, nl04=0.7
ICRF ramp to try to find threshold. D didn't couple, trying the shot again with RF from 2-max availble ramp. Delaying RF to 0.7s to try to optimize the first few pulses which are higher than the rest of them! |
| Aug 30 2007 10:50:33:937AM | 1070830008 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA, nl04=0.7
L-mode, E dropped out, density still much too high, RF outgassing dropping the target density to 0.5s Next shot: RF change, start at 0.7s flat RF 3MW pulse. |
| Aug 30 2007 11:01:42:360AM | 1070830009 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA, nl04=0.5 actual density before H-mode closer to 0.7s, start at 0.7s flat RF 3MW pulse.
Well, we got an H-mode but right away! Too much power. Next shot ramp power from 2-3MW still starting at 0.7s. DNB starting at .58s to get two pulses in before the RF starts. |
| Aug 30 2007 11:13:27:940AM | 1070830010 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA, nl04=0.5 actual density before H-mode closer to 0.6s,
ramped RF pulse from .7-1.5s 2-3MW Got H-mode right away again still too much power. Getting closer though, Next shot ramp power from 1.5-2.5MW still starting at 0.7s. DNB starting at .58s to get two pulses in before the RF starts. Change target density to 0.6 in hopes of getting nl04=0.7x10^20 m^-2 |
| Aug 30 2007 11:38:29:400AM | 1070830011 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA, nl04=0.6 actual density before H-mode closer to 0.7s!
ramped RF pulse from .7-1.5s 1.5-2.5MW Got some of the slow transition dynamics, had an RF drop out. Trying this again reducing RF to 1.25-2.25 Got the desired target density. |
| Sep 3 2007 01:52:58:700PM | 1070830012 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA, nl04=0.6 actual density before H-mode closer to .85
ramped RF pulse from .7-1.5s 1.25-2.25MW Got some of the slow transition dynamics before hand! good shot. |
| Sep 3 2007 01:55:17:587PM | 1070830013 | Rachael Mcdermott | dropped the requested density down to 0.5 in attempt to get the 0.7 data point.
was not successful, density before transition remains constant at ~.85 regardless. USN, Ip=800KA ramped RF pulse from .7-1.5s 1-2MW Got some of the slow transition dynamics before hand! good shot. |
| Aug 30 2007 12:17:51:787PM | 1070830014 | Rachael Mcdermott | USN, Ip=800KA
No H-mode. slower RF ramp over smaller range, peaking at 1.65MW. oh well Go back to LSN, to get missing low density data point. |
| Sep 3 2007 01:57:55:230PM | 1070830015 | Rachael Mcdermott | LSN, H-mode and good density but too fast for CX data! trying again same density request, dropping the RF just a little bit,
|
| Aug 30 2007 12:39:58:320PM | 1070830016 | Rachael Mcdermott | Same shot as 15, with slightly lower RF. No H-mode, lowered power too much, going back to .7MW
Density was good. A funny density dip just after 0.5s, this was also present on shot 15. Next shot moving RF back to 0.9s to avoid this dip and try to get a slightly steadier pre-hmode period |
| Aug 30 2007 01:44:34:890PM | 1070830019 | Matt Reinke | Locked mode shot for HIREX-SR velocity calibration.
Locked mode ~0.7 seconds. Clear velocity change on HIREX-SR. The predictor worked correctly according to S. Wolfe and S. Angelini. A. Graf says that some Argon CHERS signal seen on VISPEC. NEXT: Repeat. |
| Aug 30 2007 01:56:30:207PM | 1070830020 | Matt Reinke | Another locked mode, good HIREX-SR data.
NEXT: Move on to USN L-mode. ICRF 0.5-1.5 3 MW with cryo. |
| Aug 30 2007 02:14:42:640PM | 1070830021 | Matt Reinke | USN with many H-modes. Need to increase the output power to push below the threshold.
NEXT: Increase target density to nl04=1.1e20 and argon puff to 150 ms. |
| Aug 30 2007 02:25:45:063PM | 1070830022 | Matt Reinke | Still have H-modes!
NEXT: Decrease ICRF to 2 MW and increase argon gas pressure to 1.5 psi. |
| Aug 30 2007 02:45:43:860PM | 1070830023 | Matt Reinke | Still got H-modes but got the L-mode phase that I'm looking for from 0.5-0.85. It looks like the cryo was pumping away the argon and the output power dropped to the point where an H-mode was favorable.
HIREX-SR signal at peak is more than a factor of 2 from target. NEXT: add more argon puffs to keep PRAD high. |
| Aug 30 2007 02:56:02:843PM | 1070830024 | Matt Reinke | Increase PRAD from argon and increased signal level. Pump is still being efficient at removing argon to the point where the H-mode is possible at 1.1 seconds.
NEXT: Overcorrect and see if plasma can handle a steady argon puff. |
| Aug 30 2007 03:26:01:280PM | 1070830026 | Matt Reinke | Great shot! The cryo can handle a steady state argon puff and the argon intensity and PRAD level off before the puff is shot off at 1.0 seconds. This is great news.
Still below target count rates and collisionality is too low NEXT: increase pressure to 2 psi and increase lenght of puff to 1.3 seconds. |
| Aug 30 2007 03:46:23:797PM | 1070830027 | Matt Reinke | Looks like argon, in the tokamak with the disruption. PRAD and density rise too quickly before RF, cooling and causing disruption?
NEXT: Move start of RF to 0.4 seconds (likely a fixzzle, though) |
| Aug 30 2007 03:57:45:530PM | 1070830028 | Matt Reinke | Another disruption, but this one made it to the density flattop. Looks like PRAD got too high? nl04 overshoots to 1.2e20 as well
NEXT: Increase ICRF to 3 MW. |
| Aug 30 2007 04:11:17:710PM | 1070830029 | Matt Reinke | Very good shot. Nice SS L-mode with high signal. Still need to drop Te and should be able to increse PRAD further. RF working great.
NEXT: Change density programing to account for overshoot. Increase argon pressure to 2.5 psi. |
| Aug 30 2007 04:27:28:670PM | 1070830030 | Matt Reinke | Another good shot. Argon pressure only got to 2.3 psi. Te still too high.
NEXT: Try a larger increase to 2.8 psi. |
| Aug 30 2007 04:37:01:253PM | 1070830031 | Matt Reinke | Almost made it to SS. Argon a bit too high and Te drops too low.
NEXT: Keep same pressure, increase RF to 3.5 MW. |
| Aug 30 2007 04:59:05:383PM | 1070830032 | Matt Reinke | Good RF on this shot. Lasted through SS level. Te too high, overshot. It's too hard to try and get the very low collisionality since you get so close to a disruption. Going to let RF take the gloves off and max their power.
HIREX-SR says they didn't get data because of CHECK based trigger problem. NEXT: RF to 4.5 MW |
| Aug 30 2007 05:05:06:280PM | 1070830033 | Matt Reinke | Disruption. Seems like the RF starts to heat up the limiters and Mo begins to come in at 0.63 seconds. Also get a short H-mode. If I had more time I'd increase the plenum pressure and adjust RF, but we've run out of shots.
NEXT: Lower the RF back to 4.0 MW |
| Aug 30 2007 05:15:20:343PM | 1070830034 | Matt Reinke | Disruption. Similar as before, but we got a decent SS region from 0.6-0.75 when the Mo comes screaming in. Good 4 MW RF pulse. |
