| The primary purpose of this experiment is to study the instabilities that are associated with ITB development and saturation in Alcator C-MOD. This is MP501, Fluctuations in ITB plasmas.
Overnight boronization is scheduled, followed by 2 hours ecdc in He, 1 hour in D2. Set up as in shot 1040310010, TF 6.4T, Ip 1 MA, nl04 1 x 1019, D2. Attempt to get reproducible EDA H-modes with 2-3 MW ICRF, which will produce ITBs. Argon will be required for HIREX, but must be used sparingly and discontinued if ITBs don't form. PCI group needs 2-3 similar shots to answer the critical question on the instability propagation and location. It may take 10-20 shots to get 3 good ones. Caution, at high field care must be taken to make sure the resonance does not intersect the antenna, because higher plasma current pushes the resonance further. There is a fine line between having the resonance far enough off axis to get the ITB and having it too far and touching the antenna. All standard core diagnostics, Reflectometry, TS (Edge and Core), VB, ECE (GPC1 and GPC2), FRCECE, magnetics, MSE, PCI, TCI, Da, HIREX, CXRS are required. PCI is of prime importance. |

MP#491 MSE calibrations Purpose: Shot-to-shot variability observation in the beam-into-gas calibration Run plan: At the beginning of the run, 6 shots At the end of the run, 2 shots 1. The first five shots in the morning (1) Gas: 1070529026 with some modification D2, 0.5 mTorr in G-side MKS. This is 0.29 in G-side rat. Also note that it was He4 in 1070529026. Also the gas pressure decreased in the middle of the shot so ~ 7% (0.29 x 0.07 = 0.02 in G-side rat) puffiing may be required at 0.5 sec. (2) Power system: 1070529026 with some modification. EF3 ramps to 10.0kA at 1.35 sec and remains at 10.0kA until 1.5 sec, then ramps down. EF4 same as 1070529026. (3) DNB: 0.1 ~ 1.5 sec long pulse 2. The last shot in the morning (1) Gas: Same as 1 (2) Power system: 1070529008 with some modification. TF and EF3 flattop extended by 100 msec. (3) DNB: 0.2 ~ 1.7 sec long pulse 3. The 2 shots in the evening : Same as 1 |

| The run was initially frustrating, but we finally obtained the data on ITB fluctuations that we needed. Shots 21-30 all had ITBs and will be useful for analysis. HIREX data was obtained after shot 25. We were unable to run low field side ITBs, because of repeated disruptions so we completed the run with high field side off axis ICRF. Once we got them, which required moving the strike point, they were reproducible.
Begin run at shot 8, which was a no power shot, as was shot 9. Shot 10 was a good plasma, but there was not enough rf power and the H-mode did not last very long. Shot 11 had a good EDA h-mode, but the power was still low and there was no ITB. Shot 12 began a long series of disruptions with the rf power: Shots 12-15 disrupted just after the rf turned on, despite tweaking the resonance location. Shot 16 was fine with no RF. Shot 17 disrupted after the RF came on. Shot 18 was at 5.4 T, RF resonance on center, and was fine. Shot 19 was at 5.9 T and disrupted with the RF turn on. Shot 20 was at 4.5T and disrupted with the RF turn on, indicating that is not the resonance location that is causing the problem. ITBs with PCI masked to the upper half of the plasma: Shot 21 was sucessful with ITB (the lower x-point was moved out.) The PCI window was set a little too early. Shot 22 was successful with ITB and fluctuation data. Shot 23, successful with ITB and good fluctuation data. ITBs with PCI masked to the lower part of the plasma: Shot 24 was successful with ITB Shot 25 was successful with ITB Shot 26 was successful with ITB ITBs with PCI unmasked: Shot 27 was successful with a weak ITB Shot 28 was successful with a stronger ITB, possibly the best one of the day. Shot 29 was similar to shot 28. Shot 30 had a lower magnetic field and consequently higher rate of rise on the ITB with stronger peaking. There was a back transition which recovered to a 2nd stron ITB. |

MP#491 MSE calibration Purpose: Shot-to-shot variability observation in the beam-into-gas calibration This run is divided by two parts: 6 shots at the beginning of the run and 3 shots at the end. All are the beam-into-D2 gas. 1. Shots 2,3,4,5,6, and 31, 32 These shots have the same gas & power setting - 0.5 mTorr & EF3/EF4 ramp. There are many plasmas (from the other run) between shots 6 and 31. We see the shot-to-shot variation up to 2 degrees between the first 5 shot group and the last 2 shot group. Each group's shot-to-shot variation is less than 1 degree. Inner channels are a little better than outer channels. 2. Shots 7 and 33 These two shots have the same gas & power setting - 0.5 mTorr & constant EF3/EF4 which gives constant pitch angle during the entire shot. Many plasma shots in between. The variation is up to 1 degree. There is a small reduction in Bt in shot 33 and this causes a pitch angle changes by 0.1 degree, so the shot-to-shot variability is much larger than that. 3. Also, there is some sort of 'roll over' in the pitch angle in time when the beam pulse starts. To test this, between shots 31 and 32 we moved the beam starting time from 0.05 sec to 0.4 sec. In both shots, the roll-over effect is observed. |

| The run was divided into two parts, one on MP 491, Beam into gas shots for MSE calibration, the other on MP 501, fluctuations in ITB discharges.
The beam into gas shots went very well and the first part of the Plan was carried out in the first 7 shots of the run. To facilitate reaching a constant fill pressure, the gate valve was closed during the shot. The TF and vertical vields reproduced extremely well, and the shot-to-shot variation in pressure was acceptable. The MP 501 shots were more difficult, as it was found that moving the ICRH resonance to the outside resulted in early disruptions once the ICRH turned on. After a number of tries, it was decided to try inside resonance (lowering the field to ~ 4.4 T.) These were successful after moving the x-point up 1 cm, although after a few full length shots the ITB discharges disrupted near the end of the current flat-top. But these shots were useful for getting the PCI data that the run was designed for. After a strongly peaked ITB shot at 4.3 T, namely shot 30, the ITB part of the run was terminated and the rest of MP 491 was carried out. During these last 3 shots, cooling of the magnet was suspended in order to begin the warmup of the machine as this was the last run of the 2007 campaign. Scorecard: 33 shots, 10 "beam into gas", 2 no-power shots, 21 plasmas of which there were no fizzles even though most of them disrupted. The last 10 plasma shots all featured ITB's and while most disrupted near rampdown, they were of sufficient length to get the data which the MP called for. |

| Aug 31 2007 09:32:04:757AM | 1070831001 | Jin-Seok Ko | ratiometic was off, but mks gave ~ 1.5 (too high) will try again with a lower value MSE signal is good. We are going to control the gas (maintain the constant gas) not by the secondary puffing in the middle of the pulse, but by closing the gatevalves after the first puffing. |
| Aug 31 2007 09:26:16:060AM | 1070831002 | Steve Scott | This shot is good. Pressure = 0.6 mTorr. good DNB, good fields. This is shot #1 of the reproducibility scan. |
| Aug 31 2007 09:30:42:257AM | 1070831002 | Jin-Seok Ko | ratiometic was on, mks shows ~ 0.5 mTorr : good enough MSE signal is good. |
| Aug 31 2007 09:54:56:497AM | 1070831003 | Steve Scott | good, but torus pressure is about 0.1 mTorr lower (20%). Wolfe suggests that maybe we're getting less and less gas evolved off the inner wall. So we will ask for 7% more gas on the next shot. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:00:39:317AM | 1070831003 | Jin-Seok Ko | mks decreased by about 10% (0.1 mTorr) from the previous value. The deviation from the first pressure value starts at the beginning of the dnb pulse. Maybe the DNB is pumping the gas. In the worst case (pitch angle ~ 10 deg) , pitch angle error is 2.5 deg / 2.5 mTorr = 1 deg/mTorr from Fig 7 in memo 68b. So we will have an error, at maximum, of 1 deg/mTorr x 0.1 mTorr = 0.1 deg which should be much smaller than what we are seeking for to study the reproducibility (1 ~ 2 degrees) MSE signal is good. For the next shot, gas puffing will be increased by 7%. |
| Aug 31 2007 09:58:04:593AM | 1070831004 | Steve Scott | good. pressure is about like previous shot: a little larger at the start of the shot, and about the same at the end. next shot: increase gas by 5%, hoping to maintain these conditions approximately. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:01:46:053AM | 1070831004 | Jin-Seok Ko | Gas pressue was constant. Next shot, puffing will be increased by another 5%. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:09:50:550AM | 1070831005 | Steve Scott | Good shot. Number 4 of the scan. DNB current is a little higher, and it suffered a small glitch near the end. Torus pressure just a little higher than before. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:11:24:020AM | 1070831005 | Jin-Seok Ko | Gas pressue was constant. Actually, a little bit increasing. So no additional gas puffing increase for the next shot |
| Aug 31 2007 10:24:17:697AM | 1070831006 | Steve Scott | good shot. Number 5 and last member of this reproducibility scan. Pressure is just a little higher than previous shots, but still less than shot #2. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:39:12:330AM | 1070831007 | Steve Scott | New beam-into-gas configuration: constant BT, EF3 and EF4 and torus pressure. We got what we asked for: EF3=9.5, EF4=4. very constant torus pressure this ends MP491 for the morning. --------------------------------------------- |
| Aug 31 2007 11:40:45:530AM | 1070831010 | Catherine Fiore | Good plasma, but short rf pulse, h-mode at limited power. No ITB. |
| Aug 31 2007 11:59:59:323AM | 1070831011 | Catherine Fiore | Good plasma, rf power dropped just past 1 s. No ITB. |
| Aug 31 2007 12:12:19:093PM | 1070831012 | Catherine Fiore | Disruption at 0.8s. We are going to lower the current slightly to try and move the resonance a little bit further away from the antenna. |
| Aug 31 2007 12:19:22:777PM | 1070831013 | Catherine Fiore | Disruption at 0.8s. |
| Aug 31 2007 12:30:03:683PM | 1070831014 | Catherine Fiore | Disruption again. We are going to try turning off j-port and getting 2 MW total out of D & E. |
| Aug 31 2007 12:42:28:140PM | 1070831015 | Catherine Fiore | Disruption again. We are going to try turning off the rf. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:01:22:780PM | 1070831016 | Catherine Fiore | Ohmic shot, ran fine. We are going to turn the rf on at 0.8 instead of 0.6. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:14:38:300PM | 1070831017 | Catherine Fiore | The plasma disrupted with the rf. We are going to lower the field to 5.4 T and see if it will run. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:25:01:410PM | 1070831018 | Catherine Fiore | Good plasma, good h-mode. We'll try 6.2 T in two steps, 5.9 T then 6.2 T.
We are missing Thomson on shots 17 and 18. I have turned the laser back on. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:34:48:907PM | 1070831019 | Catherine Fiore | Disrupt again at 5.9 T. I don't think the resonance is close to the antenna at all. We have decided to go to 4.5 T.
|
| Aug 31 2007 01:48:28:303PM | 1070831020 | Catherine Fiore | Disrupt again at 4.5 T.
|
| Aug 31 2007 02:05:03:563PM | 1070831021 | Catherine Fiore | Finally, a weak ITB. The PCI window was a little too early. We are going to re do the shot at slightly lower field, 4.4 T. |
| Aug 31 2007 02:18:47:397PM | 1070831022 | Catherine Fiore | ITB which ended prematurely with a back transition. We'll try and repeat the settings. |
| Aug 31 2007 02:53:03:543PM | 1070831023 | Catherine Fiore | Good ITB, good data. The fluctuations are there, although not as strong as we have seen with LFS ITB's. The PCI masking has now been changed to see the lower half of the plasma. |
| Aug 31 2007 03:11:22:197PM | 1070831024 | Catherine Fiore | Good ITB, good data. Some fluctuations are showing up on the PCI. We'll repeat with earlier RF input. |
| Aug 31 2007 03:25:55:670PM | 1070831025 | Catherine Fiore | Good ITB, good data with fluctuations. Back transition at 1.2 s followed by a terminal disruption. Repeat. Note, Ar was increased to 60 ms on this shot. |
| Aug 31 2007 03:38:26:283PM | 1070831026 | Catherine Fiore | Good ITB, good data with fluctuations. The PCI masking is being changed on the next shot. |
| Aug 31 2007 03:57:50:300PM | 1070831027 | Catherine Fiore | Weak ITB, good data with fluctuations. Repeat. |
| Aug 31 2007 04:09:32:723PM | 1070831028 | Catherine Fiore | Good ITB although it ended early. Maybe the best of the day. Good data with fluctuations. Repeat. |
| Aug 31 2007 04:21:53:650PM | 1070831029 | Catherine Fiore | Good ITB although it ended early. We believe we have our data set. We will lower the field slightly for the last shot to see if we can get a stronger ITB. |
| Aug 31 2007 04:33:23:400PM | 1070831030 | Catherine Fiore | The ITB peaked much more quickly with the lower field. Most peaked shot of the day. |
| Aug 31 2007 04:56:57:560PM | 1070831031 | Steve Scott | resume MP491: beam-into-gas This is a repeat of shot 6. Good repeat. DNB timing is same as shot 6. |
| Aug 31 2007 05:16:10:997PM | 1070831032 | Steve Scott | Repeat shot 31, but move dnb to start at 0.4 sec. Good shot. Pressure just a little lower. |
| Aug 31 2007 05:19:39:377PM | 1070831033 | Steve Scott | repeat shot 007: constant Bt, EF3 and EF4, but move dnb to start at 0.4 sec. result: good. Pressure just a little lower, and TF is just a little lower, possibly due to the higher resistance (we have operated with no TF cooling on shots 31, 32, and 33). END of FY07 run campaign! ------------------------------------------------------ |

| Aug 31 2007 08:55:04:560AM | Steve Wolfe | load from 1070529026, which is beam into gas gas puff on pg4 is from [-.6,-.1] we will try running this with gv closed in pulse Need to increase the gain on ef3 to get to flattop and hold it. EF3 P gain from 6 to 9.9, start flattop at 1.3 to give it some time Zero wires 4 and 6 (not used) Load seg2 from 1070529008 and extend tf pulse to 1.7sec | |
| Aug 31 2007 09:07:26:923AM | 1070831001 | Ron Parker | Ready for first beam into gas shot. Thanks to Steve W. for setting it up. |
| Aug 31 2007 09:20:07:677AM | 1070831001 | Ron Parker | First shot went well, but pressure was too high by afactor of 3. Also, Ratiomatic was off for this shot. EF3 and TF fields were fine.
Pulse gas was set to 0.5 s, for next shot it will be 1.67 s. |
| Aug 31 2007 09:26:56:563AM | 1070831002 | Ron Parker | Shot 2 was on the money regarding fields and fill pressure.
Next 4 shots will be carbon copies (hopefully). |
| Aug 31 2007 09:50:24:300AM | 1070831003 | Ron Parker | Shot 3 had about 7% less pressure than the preceeding one, therefore we will increase the pulse gas pulse width by 7% for next shot, from .167 to ,179 s |
| Aug 31 2007 10:01:14:850AM | 1070831004 | Ron Parker | Pressure did increase early in pulse but was still not high enough.
For next pulse, the gas pulse width will be 0.188 s |
| Aug 31 2007 10:17:18:203AM | 1070831005 | Ron Parker | Shot 5 was OK, one more like this, then the last shot called for in Jin-Seok's plan. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:28:32:767AM | 1070831006 | Ron Parker | Shot 6 was fine, now we'll take the last shot in Jin-Seok's run plan.
|
| Aug 31 2007 10:57:27:687AM | 1070831007 | Ron Parker | shot 7 ran as programmed, completing the first part of the beam into gas miniproposal. |
| Aug 31 2007 10:57:40:463AM | 1070831008 | Ron Parker | Now we start Catherine's run. Hopefully a 1 MA, ITB shot coming up. |
| Aug 31 2007 11:01:49:173AM | 1070831008 | Ron Parker | Ooops, a no power shot. |
| Aug 31 2007 11:20:34:077AM | 1070831009 | Ron Parker | Oh-Oh, another problem on the way to pulse. Stay tuned.
|
| Aug 31 2007 11:40:34:420AM | 1070831010 | Robert Granetz | Granetz substituting as physics operator for Ron for about an hour. Ron has already loaded DPCS for shot 10. |
| Aug 31 2007 11:47:34:727AM | 1070831010 | Robert Granetz | Shot 10 -- Plasma. Good shot. ICRF not so good. Next shot: repeat for ICRF. No DPCS changes. |
| Aug 31 2007 11:57:48:430AM | 1070831011 | Robert Granetz | Shot 11 -- Plasma. Good shot. Better H-mode, but still no ITB. D-port ICRF ran well at 0.75 MW, but E and J are still faulting a lot. Next shot: no DPCS changes |
| Aug 31 2007 12:08:59:493PM | 1070831012 | Robert Granetz | Shot 12 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.85 s. H-mode; no ITB. Next shot: drop Ip to 0.9 MA. |
| Aug 31 2007 12:22:18:327PM | 1070831013 | Robert Granetz | Shot 13 -- Plasma. Disrupted at t=0.79 s. Looks like an impurity injection at t=0.76 s. Next shot: increase outer gap by 2 mm (move RCUR in by 1 mm) |
| Aug 31 2007 12:27:53:743PM | 1070831014 | Robert Granetz | Shot 14 -- Plasma. Early disruption again. Ron has returned as physics operator just after this shot. |
| Aug 31 2007 12:43:06:830PM | 1070831015 | Ron Parker | Shot 15 disrupted again. For next shot, we'll turn off all Rf.
(Last shot had J off) |
| Aug 31 2007 01:02:11:793PM | 1070831016 | Ron Parker | That shot was Ohmic only, to see if it is in fact the RF that leads to the disruption, which is apparently the case since the shot ran full length. So now we'll put D&E on, and move the RF to 0.8 s, where the stike point is on the side wall of the divertor, at least according to EFIT. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:19:31:917PM | 1070831017 | Ron Parker | Dscharge again disrupts, shortly after RF turns on.
Is it the fact that the resonance is too close to antenna? To see, we'll keep BT at 5.4 T on next shot. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:34:46:800PM | 1070831018 | Ron Parker | At 5.4 T, a full length plasma with H-Mode and 2 MW from D&E |
| Aug 31 2007 01:35:40:783PM | 1070831019 | Ron Parker | This shot had Bt = 5.9 and it disrupted.
So now we'll see if we can get a high field ITB. |
| Aug 31 2007 01:54:09:233PM | 1070831020 | Ron Parker | Again, it disrupted even though the resonance was on the inside! So apparently it is not the resonance position that is the cause of the disruption.
Next, we'll move the lower X-point out by 1 cm. |
| Aug 31 2007 02:05:00:907PM | 1070831021 | Ron Parker | Success! Full length discharge with ~2.2 MW, devolving into ITB toward end of shot. Next: Lower field to 4.4 T |
| Aug 31 2007 02:24:43:767PM | 1070831022 | Ron Parker | Again, a full length shot. Shot went into H-Mode but came out at 1.25 s, at whch time it reformed. Next: try again. |
| Aug 31 2007 02:34:06:153PM | 1070831023 | Ron Parker | Shot 23 ran OK, full length, full length with ITB formation.
Short break coming up for cell access. |
| Aug 31 2007 03:11:32:353PM | 1070831024 | Ron Parker | Plasmas resume, shots appear reproducible.
This shot went full length, similar to the last several shots. Next: same shot, a little more RF power and earlier RF turnon. We are turning Argon on for this shot, 60 ms. Be prepared for disruption! |
| Aug 31 2007 03:19:32:630PM | 1070831025 | Ron Parker | Shot disrupted at ~ 1.4 s, as anticipated.
Try 50 ms worth of Ar on next shot. |
