Power Systems Testing
SL: Cochran,Irby
PO: Wolfe

Run begins at 9:00 AM (08:30 Lockup)

The main purpose of this run is Engineering Power System tests.
These will also provide fields suitable for checking out the
replacement flux loops at F10, F11, and F19, as well as the
remainder of the magnetics equilibrium diagnostics.

Most of the testing will be carried out under PLC control. DPCS will
be used for double swing EF4 testing, and to provide inputs for the
Chopper test and the A-Coil tests. Gas puff tests will be carried out
using DPCS program waveforms, as requested.

Gas Setup:
-----------
fill B-top 6psi D2 Hybrid Disabled (PG4)
fill B-side lower 1 psi Argon Hybrid Disabled (PG1)
fill B-side Upper as is, Hybrid Disabled (PG2)
fill B-main 40psi D2 Hybrid Disabled (PG3)
NINJA pumped out, Disabled
* Valves will be Enabled for testing during the course of the day.

Shot sequence for the power system testing will be determined by the
Engineering operator.

Magnetics signals, particularly those from the replaced flux loops
will be monitored for polarity and amplitude during the PF testing.
If these are ok, then the following steps could be done to start using
them again:
1) Turn the corresponding INPUTs on in the Hybrid model tree,
   both under CONFIG and DPCS_CONFIG
2) Change \analysis::recon_vac:static_shot from 2014 to 2003
3) Change \analysis::efit_green:static_shot from 2007 to 2008 (Also in \efit)
Change expressions in fwtsi in both \analysis::efit_efitin and
\efit::efit_efitin. May need to change icalz as well?
4) CVS update /usr/local/cmod/codes/pcs/user_algs/contihh/ianup.pro
to pick up the reversion to ian_001 for new shots
5) With the new ianup.pro in place, run
   usr/local/cmod/codes/mhd/fluxihh/load_predictors_procedure.sh
to put back the predictors in the tree
6) Add a line to \hybrid::top.config:config_id to recalculate mag
   predictors.
Note that it may be better to let the first plasma attempts use the
same subset of flux loops that we ended up with in August, and then make
the changes to turn the new ones on again.
See logbook entry from Nov 16 01:28PM under DPCS and MHD topics.

It is extremely unlikely that we will try for plasma on Tuesday, especially
if the leak has not been found. In case we do get that far and decide to
try, the following power system setup should be used:

Power systems as on 1070830001
Acoil Configuration +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot, Enabled
Gas setup as above, except ENABLE B-top and B-main.

TORVAC: Pumping Gate valves open

Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems:
 Z-bolo shutter.
Check with Terry and/or Reinke before opening VUV
ECE will NOT be available

ICRF setup: None
LH: none

Physop plan:
Try for plasma with the programming as on the target shot. Check null
and magnetics signals on replacement flux loops. Once plasma is obtained,
check EFIT reconstruction, chisq values of new loops. If not already done,
update fluxihh predictors in analysis tree (/usr/local/cmod/codes/mhd/fluxihh/load_predictors_procedure.sh) and check
startup signals and gap values during flattop.
Get at least two consecutive successful startups before recalculating
predictors to use the new loops. Probably start by only updating seg2
predictors.

Physop summary for Tuesday, Nov 20, 2007
Power system tests and C-Mod startup.
SL: ?
PO: wolfe
EO: Dekow,Cochran,Byford

Power testing went fairly smoothly, and was completed
on shot 29. One remaining outstanding issue is that the
TF bus rogowski is reading 10-15% low, compared to the
shunt, and also to the Btor signal.

The new replacement magnetics flux loops f10,f11,f19 seem to
be working ok. No other active magnetics are reporting problems.
MFLUX plots look reasonable, perhaps with a small up-down assymetry
associated with f11.

Shots 30 and 31 were plasma attempts, taken despite the fact that
the air leak is still present with a base pressure of 3.6e-6Torr.
Programming was taken from 1070830001, an 800kA successful shot
from the next to last day of operation last summer.
Both resulted in fizzles, with no current pickup and high CIII light.
The zmeter isn't working. Flashes were not seen on the tv, either
ch 33 or the h-port view. The mflux nulls looked reasonable, certainly
better than they had been.

The EFIT static shot was updated to 2008 before the plasma attempts.
None of the other changes relative to the replacement loops were
implemented during the run.

After shot 31, we shut down the run in order to resume leak checking.
There seems no point in continuing until the leak is fixed.

Following the run, I completed items #1-4 of the steps listed in
the po_plan for incorporating the replacement flux loops. EFIT, MFIL and
RECON_VAC are ready to go using the new loops. Calling predictors
using vacuum, filament, and fluxihh algorithms should generate
predictors using the new loops.

I have not yet updated the coefficients used for the analysis tree
fluxihh predictors (including rcur, clearin, etc.) and I have
not yet added a line to the \hybrid::top.config:config_id with
instructions for changing the predictors. I'll do these tomorrow,
assuming we run and get plasmas, which assumes the leak gets fixed.

Scorecard:

Following the run on Tuesday, Nov 20
Update /usr/local/cmod/codes/pcs/user_algs/contihh/ianup.pro

This should cause mfil and the fluxihh algorithm for predictors
to revert to the original ian tree which uses all the flux loops
(in their nominal locations). Calling the predictors should now
result in getting predictors with the right things loaded. I'll test
that now.

It seems to only retrieve ian shot version 1, which is correct.
The predictor has entries for f10,f11 and f19.

Nov 20 2007 05:25:14:740PMSteve Wolfe
Following the run on Tuesday, Nov 20
Try using recon_vac:static_shot=2003 on the Br0 trace
for shot31. It is broken, at least in IDL. Also in
scopes. It may be an IEEE float or library issue, the
values are in the 10^22 range. This means I'm going to need to make a new
one anyhow.

The numbers for the coefficients don't look crazy
IDL> print,mdsvalue('ANALYSIS::TOP:RECON_VAC:BR_0:MATRIX')
   0.00100399 -0.105050 -0.0928029 -0.0386942 -0.0182297 -0.0251558 -0.00671100 -0.00594429 -0.0706493 -0.0332532
   -0.0330985 0.0328775 0.0330541 0.0718021 0.00554995 0.00650418 0.0250986 0.0182487 0.0387873 0.0929127
     0.103649 -0.496878 -0.484248
Ah, the problem is that the mag_data:signal is the wrong
shape, because it was stored from the other static shot prescription

Try again, and the value using 2003 comes out +.0005T compared
to -.002T. The mflux value is coming out around -.0005T.

Put the static shot value back in the pulse file.

In the analysis model, set analysis::recon_vac:static_shot=2003.
This will allow recalculation of vacuum predictors (br_0) and the
recon_vac calculation in the tree will be consistent with the
new predictors, and will hopefully be close to correct.

shot#1: EFC test
gas on for b-top only 59ms pulse at -.5sec
hung up in INIT. Josh cleared it
Only about 100A of efc, only got about 40V on vstatic
Got gas. 0.12mTorr on ratiomatic.

shot#1: EFC test
Bit noise level blip on f10,f11 (both negative) and
f19 (positive). Signs seem consistent with nearby loops.
Can't tell anything from the magnitude; we only got about
40A of current.

Nov 20 2007 09:37:16:860AM1071120002Steve Wolfe
shot#2: EFC test repeat
Got about 100amps, again looks like low
voltage on all three TMX's.

shot#3: Turn off B-top puff
Bill and Gary changed a chip on the EFC regulator board
Repeat EFC test
Got current this time, about 800amps, looks normal.
Torus pressure is rising (with gate valves closed) into the
high e-5 scale at 1:30 into recool
1e-4 at 2:00 min
magnetics signals look reasonable, between 5 and 9mWb on the
new loops, correct polarity

Nov 20 2007 10:09:06:810AM1071120004Steve Wolfe
shot#4: 800V EFC test.
Gary will restart the cycle, per jas
Current looks ok again, voltage still seems to be 600V?

Nov 20 2007 10:22:50:080AM1071120005Steve Wolfe
shot#5: 800V EFC test with current limit at 2.5ka
fizzle detector moved out. Got a nice flat pulse
at 1700A, near 1000V. Looks good to me.

magnetics look ok, f10=-36, f11=-27,f19=+22
f01 has nothing but bit noise, which may be ok since it's on
the midplane. All other flux loops have visible signal.

Nov 20 2007 10:33:09:900AM1071120006Steve Wolfe
shot#6: EF2U test (PLC control)
EF2U about -3kA, also +600A induced in ef3
all flux loops have signal, mflux looks reasonable.

Nov 20 2007 10:40:43:307AM1071120007Steve Wolfe
shot#7: EF2L test (PLC control)
EF3L at -3kA, mflux looks reasonable

This one had program for 1000A and 500A, but only got
first levelto 550A because of offset.
Increase levels to 1200,800, should get ~600 and 200.
Ignore f10,f11,f19 warnings on wires 1,2,3,4,6,7 since we're
not using these, and the loops are apparently ok anyway!

-1100Amps and program is -1345
dpcs is showing -240A of error signal. voltage demaind
is only -750V. Maybe doesn't have enough gain? It's at P=8.
Gary says it looked the same in march.

Move on, maybe need to come back to it

Behavior explained, PLC current limit was at 2000A,
but the coils are in parallel so should have been >2800 for
that program. It was riding the current rail.
