PO Plan addendum Plan for plasma operation: 0) Start from 1071120031, which still uses the old predictors with zero weights for the f10,f11,f19. Also, the fluxihh coefficients in the analysis tree are still consistent with these predictors. EFIT, MFLUX, MFIL, processed magnetics, should all be using the new loops. 1) Try to get plasma, tweaking mainly gas and small tweaks for null, rcur. While doing this, let engineers check out the TF rogowski and instrument oh2U reverse bridge to investigate oscillation. 2) Once we get a plasma, switch to new predictors in seg2, change seg2 title. Compare EFIT results on next plasma. Run usr/local/cmod/codes/mhd/fluxihh/load_predictors_procedure.sh to put back the coefficients for the new predictors into the analysis tree, and compare the RCUR, ZCUR traces at startup on the INIT scope. 3) Once we get two startups (with current rise) in a row, change to new predictors in seg 1, adjust BR0 and RCUR offset, change seg1 title. Tune startup. 4) Proceed to run plasmas for cleanup, evaluation. |

Physop summary for Tuesday, Nov 27
MP#298a C-Mod startup
PO: wolfe
EO: Cochran, Parkin, Byford
Minimal progress was made today on the restart of operation.
We got two short ugly plasmas, #4 (first attempt) and #18. Both
were less than 200msec and 600kA (programmed flattop was 800ka)
The TF rogowski signal got fixed. The problem was apparently
the slot in which the integrator card was sitting.
Not sure if there was any progress on the OH2 oscillation. I don't think
so.
The replaced flux loops continue to work, but we had one shot
#15, on which f25 and f15 failed. These were two of the ones
that needed to be zapped at the start of the last campaign,
and Bob went in and zapped them again, which seemed to have fixed them
for now. Need to be on the lookout for more of these, which are
presumed to be vacuum-side connector contact issues.
There was a flap at about the same time because two TF turns
73TM and 74TM were showing high resistance on the post-shot
scanner. Eventually we got a successful backporch TF waveform
working and Jim verified that the resistance with 50kA in the
TF was an acceptable, though somewhat high, 3uOhm. The scanner
values were above 8uOhms. Yuri had to modify the RSView program
to allow a TF fizzle delay of 2500ms in order to get the backporch
to run.
Also before shot 16 we took advantage of the long cell access to
ECDC for about half an hour. It didn't seem to help much.
Before the run a power supply in the rack with the halpha, CIII,
and other diode signal pre-amps was fried. The supply was removed
for repair, and did not get replaced during the day. The Halpha
and CIII signals are present on today's shots but with very low
amplitude; presumably we are seeing the photovoltaic response. Anyhow
the timing and relative amplitudes today are useable, but not the
absolute levels.
The wide1 (A-port, TV ch 19 I think) was working, and also DANT.
Wide 2 was not. Jim took a look at it during an access, but it
still never got working, and there seems to be no data in Mdsplus
for this signal.
There were a number of data system hangs, resulting in two no power shots
and some other delays. There was also a mystery power supply failure
of the OH's and EF1's on shot #11, which may have been related to the
data system meltdown on shot#10.
We got as far as step 2 of the addendum plan, calling seg2 predictors
which use the new flux loops, at shot#19. I also managed after two
tries to get the corresponding coefficient into the analysis tree,
for Ian's RCUR and ZCUR signals, among others in the fluxihh family.
We never got another plasma past the segment switch, so got no evidence
of how the predictors are working. The RCUR and ZCUR traces
around breakdown look reasonable, slightly different from the old ones
but trends are similar.
I never got close to calling the startup segment predictors, since
we never got two current rises in a row. I tweaked the gas a lot and
the Br, Bz, and RCUR settings some, but I don't think any of it really
mattered. The machine is just too dirty.
The ratiomatic signals started off the day looking unreasonably low,
and then Brian recalibrated and they ended up seeming too high. We got
duds below 20msec on PG4, and all the fizzles appeared to be moving in.
Shot 18 seemed to move out nicely and had a clean,if somewhat slow
current rise. It may not have been coincidence that before this shot
I reduced the RCUR offset from 700 to 0, but subsequent shots at this
and even -500RCUR still looked like they moved in. Other changes were
a 10A tweak to IC_EF4U and 0.5mT on Br_0. We ended up with
RCUR = +700 (where it started)
Br_0 = -0.0035 (where we started)
EF4 = -1345 (10amps more negative than start)
PG4 = 28msec (8msec more than start)
I expect this combination will give a current rise on the first shot
tomorrow, assuming we ECDC overnight.
Note that shots from today will not give a warning about using predictors
including the repaired flux loops. Nevertheless the predictors in seg1
still do not use these, and seg2 only uses them for shots 19 and later.
The segment titles designate (obscurely) which uses what; 2007 means
it uses the old ones, 2008 the new. The next
physop should remember to change the seg1 title after he calls the
new predictors.

| Nov 27 2007 08:35:47:730AM | 1071127001 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#1: Cycle test with gas Got a little gas from Btop .025mTorr on ratiomatic, nothing visible from B-side main, but only got 30V for 80msec. I expect more from B-top at 20msec, but it may be ok. Before we started, there was some kind of electrical fault, with flames, around a C-port bottom instrumentation rack. It may have affected H-alpha. There is camac from ha2bright and CIII, but at the bitnoise level. |

Plasma to 0.12sec, 500kA NO TF rogowski trace above bit noise Late breakdown ~9msec. Halpha very low .06, CIII=.02, but baseline is .018. It looks like there is a big gain problem there. No plasma tv Ratiomatic at .025mTorr as it was on test shots. No EFIT. |

| Nov 27 2007 01:14:02:017PM | 1071127014 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#14: IC_EF4U from -1335 to -1345 fizzle. Not much difference Next: Br0 up 0.5mT |
| Nov 27 2007 01:28:47:133PM | 1071127015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: Br0 from -.0035 to -.003 Brian has recalibrated the ratiomatic, which raises the value by factor 1.7. That makes the pressure on shot#14 .063mTorr. Leave it. dud. Br0 was up to +.005T, I must have mistyped? No, it does say -.003. While I'm puzzling over this, there will be a cell access for Willy, and we will start ECDC when the scan finishes. |
| Nov 27 2007 01:36:43:667PM | 1071127015 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#15: We got flux loop baseline offsets on F25 and F15. F25 is very obviously broken on the mflux plot. The baseline offset is .14Wb ! F15 partial has a 3mWb offset (multiply by 17 for the impact) Bob will investigate when the O2 is up in the cell. |
| Nov 27 2007 01:56:37:877PM | 1071127016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Bob has zapped both F15 and F25. He reports that f25 was not shorted to the machine, and F15 was and still is. Willy says the tf taps for the turns in question already were on the live set, but the digitizer has died, which may be causing the bad readings. He is going to move them. We will not be needing a backporch. Once people get finished, we will stop ecdc and take a repeat of shot 15, with fingers crossed for the flux loops f15 and 25. |
| Nov 27 2007 02:24:59:217PM | 1071127016 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#16: Repeat after zapping loops and ecdc Willy says he moved TM72,TM73,TM74 (inputs 14,15,16) are now turns MB71,MB75,MB76. Bill extended tf to 3.0sec so we should get a backporch Fizzle. Did not get the backporch. Didn't change the fizzle delay. Flux loops look ok. TF scanner still showing high on 73,74TM Br0 is now back to between 0 and -.001T, looks like the change I was after (but it didn't work). Willy will put these back on inputs 14-16, and we'll try extending the fizzle delay on TF to 1.5sec |
| Nov 27 2007 03:14:05:267PM | 1071127017 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#17: Willy will move TM72-74 back to inputs14-16, as indicated on /usr/local/cmod/codes/engineering/scopes/scope_tf_tap.dat I will drop pg4 back from 28 to 24msec, leaving br0 at -.003 and EF4 at -1345a. Also, on the unlikely chance we get a full length shot, change the seg2 tf rampdown to 1.6sec to a backporch at 2.5sec fizzle. More light on CIII, also a bit of current. Still no back porch. It looks like 1.5sec is not enough delay, it's inverting at 1.58sec, which is correct. Maybe the slew rate is down. Next: put the br0 back to -.0035, and reduce rcur offset |
| Nov 27 2007 03:38:40:573PM | 1071127018 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#18: put the br0 back from -.003 to -.0035, and reduce rcur offset from 700 to 0. According to a note from 1060308010, Joe and Yuri modified the TF fizzle delay to allow a setting of 2500ms, but the present RSVIEW program seems to reject any value over 1500, as indicated on the screen. They are being summoned. Apparently the fix did not survive the RSView conversion; redone now. plasma to 170msec, 600ka Also got the backporch. Jim reports that turns 73 and 74 are "just fine". I'm going to go ahead and call fresh predictors in seg2 |
| Nov 27 2007 04:06:02:037PM | 1071127019 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#19: Call predictors in seg2 for RCUR,ZCUR (both),CLEARIN,RXL, ZXL, RXU,ZXU,ssep change seg2 title. Load at 27-Nov-2007 15:43:06.00 Open tree /home/wolfe/pcs_scratch -1 Open tree done Tried to run /usr/local/cmod/codes/mhd/fluxihh/load_predictors.sh and it bombs trying to find fullpath. I FIXED THAT LAST TIME!!! This means the analysis tree coefficients will be trashed. The fullpath routine is there but it didn't compile Run it manually, in IDL, after compiling the fullpath pro. I think I need to modify the load_predictors_procedure_main.pro to compile fullpath. Meanwhile, run it in IDL with the /force switch. I think it worked on the manual load. Try it and see what comes out. fizzle, not unexpected. The rcur trace looks like it moves in, zcur is actually on-screen (-.04). Rcur(t=0) changed from .63 to .76 Zcur(t=0) changed from -.04 to +.13 Zmeter is high again. I think the new coefficients loaded ok, and of course we don't know about the seg2 predictors. Next: drop Pg4 back to 20ms |
| Nov 27 2007 04:11:20:523PM | 1071127020 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#20: drop Pg4 back from 24 to 20ms Dud, Can't run the pressure that low anymore; ratiomatic claims .05mTorr and now I don't believe that either Next: put it up to 25msec |
| Nov 27 2007 04:25:35:620PM | 1071127021 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#21: Pg4 from 20 to 25ms fizzle again. At least there's some light. Not much current though. Next: raise pg4 from 25 to 28ms (Why not?) |
| Nov 27 2007 04:41:11:613PM | 1071127022 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#22: Pg4 from 25 to 28 ms fizzle, more CIII light, maybe marginally more current. Still seems to be moving in, if I'm interpreting the new improved RCUR signal correctly. Ratiomatic now claiming .072mTorr, which seems high. Before this shot, had ZBOLO shutter opened for Earl; it had been closed all day I think. Next: try a negative rcur offset to slow Bz down even more |
| Nov 27 2007 04:49:20:037PM | 1071127023 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#23: Rcur offset from 0 to -500, attempting to slow down the Bz rise to allow the current to come up. This is now 1200A-m more negative than we used last campaign, and I've probably wandered into the wilderness. fizzle. might have lasted a little longer, but still bad. CIII light still high (relatively speaking). Next: rcur back to +700, where we started |
| Nov 27 2007 05:00:58:510PM | 1071127024 | Steve Wolfe | Shot#24: Rcur offset from -500 to +700, back where it started the day. The other settings are now: Br_0 = -0.0035 (where we started) EF4 = -1345 (10amps more negative than start) PG4 = 28msec (8msec more than start) fizzle, a little less current, similar light signals. That's all for today. |
