The first shot today was a fizzle, but on shot 02, after a gas adjustment, a 250 ms plasma was produced. Unfortunately, we did not get another plasma until shot 11. The rga indicated a continual shot-to-shot decrease in impurity levels until by shot 10 we were back down to pre-shot 02 levels, though that is unlikely to explain the plasma on shot 11. Before shot 05 we did 30 minutes of D2 ECDC while CAMAC and data system issues were worked out. The main effect of the ECDC was to to stir up more impurities, that then took still longer to clean out of the machine. The discharge on shot 11 lasted 350 ms, but evolved much less impurity gas than shot 02. This result seemed to have been a good thing, but we still did not get another plasma, even as the rga indicated a relatively clean background gas. On shot 21 the DPCS failed, apparently because its server rebooted right before or during the shot cycle. Strange magnet currents were produced. This problem is being very actively investigated. No stress alarms were generated. On shot 22 the oh1 switch did not close, probably because of the problem on shot 21. I only made one small tweak to Bz0 and another to Br0 during the run. Most tweaks were to the gas. I doubt any of these changes would have mattered in a well conditioned machine. If we have similar bad luck with plasma production on Thursday, we should consider warming up the machine somewhat and continuing the 120C bake. plasmas: 02,11 problems: --------- data/camac problems 06,07 fuse replaced in oh1 supply --- SCRs okay, hipot okay duds 17,18 --- F25 issue --- zapping fixed problem shot 21: DPCS server reboot

Loaded 1071127024 w/o change just to verify PCS operation --- ok Comparison of VB signal from 1071127004 with signal from 1070831030 indicated very little difference during breakdown or well into the discharge. ---------------------------- fizzle h-alpha and ciii signals back in operation ciii signal probably about a factor of 5 larger than seen on clean boronized machine.

However, the ciii light was similar to level seen on shot 1 by shot 8 when the data system was functioning again. fields (bz0, br0) now identical to shot 2, but gas higher and breakdown later.
