MP#473: LH check-out and initial operation SL: G. Wallace PO: R. Granetz Plasma setup: Start with a shot from 1071128 which works and go from there. Ip~750kA, nl_04~0.9e20, outer gap~1cm. LH setup: Set launcher to 1.5mm behind LH limiter. Phase shifters set to 90 deg current drive direction. Before first plasma: Puff LH Gas System into vessel with gate valves closed to calibrate the new capillaries. 1) Enable CPS and start with short, low power pulses at 40kV beam voltage. 3 x 25ms pulses at 50% duty cycle (12.5 on, 12.5 off), 20kW per klystron. Start with 90 degree phasing for all pulses. Vary nl_04 and/or outer gap to verify that the CPS is operating correctly. Repeat at 60 and 120 degree phasing. (May require cell acces to set CPS trip levels.) 2) Increase pulse length to 500ms, single phase during each shot. 60, 90, 120 degree phasing, 20kW per klystron. 3) Increase power in 5kW (per klystron) incriments under good coupling conditions. If shot does not run clean, go back to previous lower power level for several shots before increasing again. |

Engineering setup for Thursday 29 Nov 2007 MP#473: LH check-out and initial operation Session leader: G. Wallace Physics operator: R. Granetz ECDC overnight in D2 and bake at 60 C. Run will start at 09:00 and end at 17:00. Power systems as on 1071128004. NOTE: WE MAY WANT TO DO BETWEEN-SHOT ECDC. A-coil configuration: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot; Enabled (standard configuration) Gas Setup: fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) leave NINJA as is DISABLED Enable the following gate valves and shutters, assuming no vacuum problems: ECE, VUV, Z-bolo (Do not enable DNB gate valve.) Torvac setup: gate valves open after the shot Specific diagnostics: plasma TV (wide1, wide2), hard x-ray monitor ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ICRF Setup: no LH Setup: as per session leader's instructions DNB: no Cryopump: no ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Run plan: NOTE: given that reliable plasma operation has not been achieved yet, most of this run may end up being devoted to plasma startup, rather than LH startup. Start with the best shot from 1071128 (011) and set Ip=0.75 MA, nl_04= 0.9e20 m-2, outer gap = 1 cm. LH launcher initially set to 1.5 mm behind limiter. 90 deg phasing. Follow session leader's run plan. Density and/or outer gap may be varied during the day. We may also try calibrating the new LH gas puff system between shots. |

| Three test shots were fired with the new new LH_B and LH_D capillaries on the NINJA. Preliminary analysis shows flow rates ~.5 torr*l/s, at 94 torr D2 in the plenum. This is in the ballpark of our anticipated flow rate of ~.1 torr*l/s.
No plasma shots with LH today due to network problems, duds, and fizzles. This run day will be delayed until we reliably get plasmas. |

A very frustrating day, partly due to computer problems...network
difficulties as well as shot cycle difficulties. These resulted in
us losing about half the attempted shot cycles. This left 18 shot
cycles that had power supplies enabled, of which 15 had all power
supplies working. Of these, we had 4 plasmas, 10 fizzles, and 1 dud.
The final shot (029) was a full-length plasma. After shot 15 I updated
all the DPCS estimators in segment 1 to use the newly-repaired flux
loops. Segment 2 had already been updated a couple of days ago. So
shot 1071129029 is a good one to load for future runs.
Because of all the difficulties with plasma operation today, the lower
hybrid system was not turned on at all. However, we did successfully
test the LH gas puffing system, and did some initial calibrations into
the empty vacuum chamber before plasma operation began this morning.

0 power supply tests
13 no-power MDS shot cycles

EFIT chi-squareds on new flux loops are around 0.5, which means that I've specified the new position coordinates correctly, I guess. Next shot: No DPCS changes. If I get several plasmas in a row, I'll start updating the predictors in segment 1. |
