| Run Summary
Using a standard 1 MA, we began plasma testing and conditioning of all transmitters, antennas, and FFT matching network (on E antenna). Overall the run was quite successful: D conditioned to 2 MW, E conditioned to 1.75 MW, and J conditioned to 1.5 MW. The addition of the prematching transformers in the D network reduces the voltage in the 9" section by ~30% and likely contributed to the high power obtained today. In addition, the phase shifter and stub tuner have SF6 in this campaign due to the reduced leak rate. The FFT network had some problems with its computer and our ability to communicate with it. For E antenna, DC2 has failed and we think this is due to a crimped cable. The J antenna improved a bit during the run but appears to be limited by arcing. Andy measured the water content this morning and found that it was quite high (~3000 ppm). This is likely a result of the absorbed water in the teflon. We plan to dry the lines out by flowing dry nitrogen through the coax lines for several days and monitoring the water content. We need to increase the pulse length to 1 second from the current 0.3 second pulse lengths and run simultaneously (which will have to wait until the H/D gets a bit lower). With respect to the machine conditions, the density and H/D increase strongly with RF power and the H/D. |

Plasma operation was very reliable today, particularly since it's only the
3rd or 4th plasma run since closing up the machine. All but one plasma
went full-length. The ICRF systems were duly exercised, and all antennas
eventually reached power levels of 1.5-1.9 MW for brief periods of time.
The FFT on E-port showed promising results on some shots. Late in the run
(from shot 19 onwards) the gate valves were kept closed for 300 seconds
after each shot so that pressure and RGA data could be taken to study wall
retention.
There were two long cell accesses to work on RF things and to change the
RGA configuration, and this limited the number of shot cycles a bit.
