| Run Plan for 1071206 MP#475 ""Cryopump Startup"" - H/D control experiments Goal Explore cryopump as a tool to control the H/(H+D) concentration in C-Mod discharges. See if a strong 'puff and pump' scenario can be used to speed-up hydrogen from the vessel. Plan We will run some upper null discharges with NL04 ~ 0.9 both with cryopump warm and cold. With cryopump cold, we will need a gas-fueling assist from the NINJA system. Start from USN discharge like 1071204027 (0.8 MA) with NL04 = 0.9. Set up for 25 PSI D2 in NINJA system with trig: 0.3 duration: 1.0. Gatevalves closed for 5 minutes after shot. Run a few shots with and without cryopump. Monitor H/(H+D), look at RGA with gatevalves closed. Move towards higher currents (1 MA) and densities (Nl04 ~ 1) and repeat. |

| Run Summary for 1071206 MP#475 """"Cryopump Startup"""" - H/D control experiments The primary goal of the experiments today was to see if we could exert some control over the H/(H+D) concentrations in a discharge by a combination of strong gas-puffing and cryopumping. In addition, we wanted to determine if such 'puff and pump' scenarios might help speed up the removal of hydrogen from the vessel. The approach was simple: run USN discharges with pump on/off, look at H/(H+D) behavior during the discharge and look at the quantity of hydrogen recovered in the gas phase after the shot when the gate-valves are closed and the cryopump has completed its regeneration (if it was used). We started off by dialing up some USN plasmas to condition the upper divertor surfaces, 0.8 MA at first then moving to 1.0 MA. It did not take long to get reproducible USN discharges; by shot #5, good discharges were rolling off the assembly line regularly. However, the cryopump system developed a problem early - an ice blockage developed in the helium inlet line in preparation for shot#2. Neither liquid nor gaseous helium could be sent through the line. We began heating up the cryogenic lines (LHe and LN2) with room temperature gas purges in the hope of thawing things out. Around about shot#10 the blockage in the LHe line started to clear. We managed to get the pump operational for shot#14. Then another problem became apparent - an intermittent reporting of the H/(H+D) level due to low signal-to-noise levels. Apparently, Earls spectrometer does not have a good view of the recycling light in the upper divertor. To remedy this, we went to 0.8 MA discharges with NL04 ~ 1. These tended to have bright inner divertor leg D-alpha intensities, resulting in a MARFE that jumped to near the lower divertor in unpumped discharges. By shot #18, these conditions led to good H/(H+D) signals in quasi-matched discharges with the pump on and off. Then we ran many shots alternating between pump on and off, seeing if an initially observed trend of low H/(H+D) with cryopumping persisted over many shots. It did. Generally we found that the D2 puffing and pumping (about 130 torr-l injected and recovered) resulted in about a factor of two reduction in H/(H+D) compared to the unpumped case (with about 30 torr-l injected and recovered). H/(H+D) levels as low as 4% were observed with puff/pump, which is remarkable considering that this is just the second run week in the present campaign. A question that remains is: Did the puff/pump scenario result in increased hydrogen removal from the vessel? For this we need to look at the RGA traces of the recovered gas - something to chew on with Jim Irby's help when he returns. -- Shot Log -- Shot 14 - 1.0 MA, USN, NL04=0.83 Cryopump cold. 44 torr-l injected. 45 torr-l during regen no H/(H+D) data, except around 2 seconds. | Despite some initial difficulties getting the cryopump working properly in the morning, we completed the scientific program of the run and got very good results. See the Session Leaders summary for details. The machine ran very well today with no delays due to main machine components or power systems, though there were data system delays on the first and last shots. There were a total of 29 shots with 25 plasmas and 4 fizzles. All plasmas were full length upper null except for disruptions in the rampdown for the shots without the cryopump. The cryopump was very effective at pumping out the density in the rampdown resulting in very smooth rampdowns and no disruptions in rampdown for shots with the cryopump on. We settled on 0.8 MA and about 0.9 x 10^20 m-2 so as to get MARFES to improve the signal on the H/D ratio measurement, which was essential for the scientific results of this experiment. In general, the H/D ratio was twice as large without the cryopump as with the cryopump on because the extra deuterium puffing required to achieve the same density with the cryopump on dilutes the hydrogen more.

| Dec 6 2007 09:42:41:260AM | 1071206001 | Joseph Snipes | Shot 1: Reloaded shot 1071205026 for the startup then loaded segment 3 from shot 1071204027 into segment 3 and turned off segment 2 and on segment 3. This is an upper null 0.8 MA, 5.4 T shot with nl04 set to 0.8 x 10^20 m^-2. It seems that the cryopump is always pumping, which may make today's experiment rather difficult. However, I increased the prepuff by 10 ms to 25 ms duration to account for the extra pumping. I also set the argon puff to 100 ms duration and enabled the valve. Good shot. |
