MP#473: LH check-out and initial operation
SL: G. Wallace
PO: R. Parker

Plasma setup:
Start with 1071205026 and go from there. Set Ip~750kA,
nl_04~0.8e20, outer gap~1cm.

LH setup:
Set launcher to 1.5mm behind LH limiter. Phase shifters set to 90 deg current
drive direction.

1) Enable CPS and start with short, low power pulses at 40kV beam voltage. 3 x
25ms pulses at 50% duty cycle (12.5 on, 12.5 off), 20kW per klystron. Start
with 90 degree phasing for all pulses. Vary nl_04 and/or outer gap to verify
that the CPS is operating correctly. Repeat at 60 and 120 degree phasing. (May
require cell acces to set CPS trip levels.)

2) Increase pulse length to 500ms, single phase during each shot. 60, 90, 120
degree phasing, 20kW per klystron.

3) Increase power in 5kW (per klystron) incriments under good coupling
conditions. If shot does not run clean, go back to previous lower power level
for several shots before increasing again.

Session Leader Summary for 1071207:

This was the first run day of the 2008 campaign for the lower hybrid
system. The goal of this run day was to make sure the LH system was still
operational and increase power slowly to the maximum level without
damaging the waveguides.

After accidentally firing at t=0 on the first shot, the LH system ran
smoothly for the rest of the day. The power was increased slowly shot to
shot, eventually working up to just over 700kW (135 kW per klystron) on
shot 21. This is comparable to the maximum power level achieved during
the 07 campaign, with any operation above 500kW troublesome during the 07
campaign. The last 25ms of the LH pulse on shot 21 tripped out due to an
arc in the jungle gym between the Magic-T and the Pant Leg. This was the
only arc all day and burned for less than 0.5ms.

A bad capacitor in the commutator cap bank caused us to stop operation for
two hours after shot 21.

Shot 24 (the next shot after the cap bank was fixed) had many arcs despite
decreasing power slightly from 21. The arcing appeared during the ramp at
~300kW level.

After this, we went back to the 50kW per klystron level, which ran clean.
The next shot at 60kW per klystron also ran clean. A final shot at 70kW
per klystron ran clean as well.

Overall, performance today was surprisingly good. We had several good
shots in a row with greater than 500kW net, which was essentially the
limit of reliable operation during the 07 run campaign. After the arc at
700+kW, peformance appeared to be greatly reduced although the technique
of drastically reducing power and slowly raising it seemed to work until
time ran out.

The machine performed extremely well today. The programmed shot (800 kA, 5.4T, nl_04~0.6e20 m-2, was repeated all day as a target for conditioning the LH antenna/system. Every shot was a full length plasma with the exception of shot
23 which was the first shot after a ~1.5 hour shutdown, and one subsequent power test. The shutdown was needed to replace a capacitor in the OH1 commutation bank, which failed during shot 21.

The LH system also performed extremely well, with the power coming quickly up to 700 kW on shot 21, although on that shot it did not quite make full length before tripping. On the next shot, the LH system tripped on the rampup at ~325 kW. After increasing power slowly on the next 3 shots, the power was brought back to a steady 350 kW with no dropouts.

Scorecard: 26 plasma attempts, one fizzle, the rest (25) full length shots.

Shot 27 ran full length.

Session Leader Comments
Dec 7 2007 09:19:00:177AM1071207001Greg WallaceFirst shot with LH of the 08 campaign. CPS enabled. 3x25ms pulses at 50% duty cycle (12.5 on, 12.5 off), 20kW per klystron.

LH accidentally fired at t=0. First of 3 pulses tripped but ran clean after that. Density at grill looks perfect during flat top.

Next shot will move to t=700ms.

Phasing off on klystrons 2-6, probably due to temperature drift. Atma will fix for next shot.
Dec 7 2007 09:39:04:730AM1071207002Greg WallaceCPS enabled. 3x25ms pulses at 50% duty cycle (12.5 on, 12.5 off), 20kW per klystron, 90 degree CD phasing. Shot ran clean at 700ms as desired. Phasing on #2 and #4 are off by ~10 degrees.

Next shot will change to 60 degree phasing.
Dec 7 2007 09:50:39:253AM1071207003Greg WallaceCPS enabled. 3x25ms pulses at 50% duty cycle (12.5 on, 12.5 off), 20kW per klystron, 60 degree CD phasing. Shot ran clean through all pulses with decent coupling.

Next shot will change to 120 degree phasing.
Dec 7 2007 10:02:41:990AM1071207004Greg WallaceCPS enabled. 3x25ms pulses at 50% duty cycle (12.5 on, 12.5 off), 20kW per klystron, 120 degree CD phasing. Shot ran clean through all pulses with decent coupling.

Next shot will be same power level, 90 degrees, single 500ms pulse starting at 700ms.
Dec 7 2007 10:16:29:980AM1071207005Greg Wallace500ms pulse starting at 700ms. Ran clean, good coupling. Everything looks ready to increase power. Next shot will be at 30kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 10:32:38:987AM1071207006Greg WallaceShot ran clean at 30kW per klystron. Next shot will ramp from 30-40 kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 10:48:14:617AM1071207007Greg WallaceShot ran clean. Next shot will increase flat top to 50 kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 11:10:25:190AM1071207008Greg WallaceShot ran clean at 50kW per klystron during flat top. Next shot will increase flat top to 60kW per klystron and increase ramp time to 100ms.
Dec 7 2007 11:24:33:070AM1071207009Greg WallaceShot ran clean at 60kW during the flat top. Next shot will increase flat top to 70kW per klystron and increase start of ramp to 40kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 11:40:07:827AM1071207010Greg WallaceAnother clean shot. Increasing power again to 80kW per klystron during flat top. Some noticable signs of current drive on loop voltage, HXR, and ECE.
Dec 7 2007 11:55:59:050AM1071207011Greg WallaceShot ran clean again at 80kW per klystron during flat top. Next shot will increase ramp to 200ms and power to 90kW per klystron during flat top. Signs of current drive are starting to appear....
Dec 7 2007 12:07:48:587PM1071207012Greg WallaceAnother clean shot at 475 kW net, 90 kW per klystron! We have maxed out the calibration at 40kV so now we need to go to 50kV beam voltage. Next shot will be at 100kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 12:26:58:263PM1071207013Greg WallaceStill clean. nl_04 increases from 6 to 7 during the LH pulse. Next shot will repeat the same plasma and LH power to see if outgassing from the LH launcher is reduced.
Dec 7 2007 12:39:37:613PM1071207014Greg WallaceDensity excursion seems less steady during LH as compared to shot 13. Will repeat at this power level one more time.
Dec 7 2007 12:49:16:540PM1071207015Greg WallaceDensity rises to just over 7e19 on nl_04 again, but starting from a bit higher density. Next shot will increase power in flat top to 110kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 01:07:08:640PM1071207016Greg WallaceAll clear at 110kW. Reflected power on column 23 is pretty high, ~8kW on RINT12. Density still rising during LH pulse.

Next shot will increase to 115kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 01:18:25:723PM1071207017Greg WallaceAll looks good at 115kW per klystron. Next shot 120kW.
Dec 7 2007 01:48:14:140PM1071207018Greg WallaceClean running at 120kW per klystron. Increase to 125kW per klystron for next shot.
Dec 7 2007 01:47:32:500PM1071207019Greg WallaceClean running at 125kW per klystron. Increase to 130kW per klystron for next shot.
Dec 7 2007 02:01:33:050PM1071207020Greg WallaceStill going strong at 130kW per klystron. Going up to 135kW for the next shot.
Dec 7 2007 02:20:55:997PM1071207021Greg WallaceThis shot was at 135kW per klystron. Looks like an arc in the jungle gym between the Magic-T and the Pant Leg split on column 3. Arc only lasted for less than 0.5ms. Next shot will decrease power back to 130kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 04:39:26:987PM1071207024Greg WallaceMuch arcing during the shot, even before reaching flat top of 130kW per klystron. The short arc during shot 21 seems to have changed something in the jungle gym on column 3. The arc started in the same place as in shot 21 (between the Magic-T and the Pant Leg) then moved up above the pant leg on later trips. Next shot will decrease power level back down to 50kW per klystron in the flat top.
Dec 7 2007 04:45:40:287PM1071207025Greg WallaceClean pulse at 50kW per klystron. Next shot will be 60kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 04:56:26:557PM1071207026Greg WallaceShot ran clean at 60kW per klystron. Next shot will be 70kW per klystron.
Dec 7 2007 05:09:04:950PM1071207027Greg WallaceFinal shot at 70kW per klystron ran clean. After drastically reducing the power we seem to be able to work it up again.

Dec 7 2007 02:15:26:603PM1071207021Ron ParkerShot ran, but small bang at end of shot heard in CTRL Rm.

LH pwr up to 700 kW, but trip at end of pulse (1.17 s.)
Dec 7 2007 03:46:07:030PM1071207021Ron ParkerThe problem associated with the bang in the power room was a bad capacitor in the OH1 commutation bank. After > 1 hour delay, the capacitor bank has been repaired and the run will resume. First shot will be a power test.
Dec 7 2007 04:14:10:870PM1071207022Ron ParkerThis was a no power shot.
Dec 7 2007 04:13:09:320PM1071207023Ron ParkerShot fizzled, ruining th string of 21 straight full length discharges.
Dec 7 2007 04:37:44:737PM1071207024Ron ParkerShot 24 ran, but now LH is intermittent, breaking down first on the rampup at ~350 kW (net).
Dec 7 2007 04:44:58:957PM1071207025Ron ParkerShot ran well, LH stayed on with dropout and reached ~260 kW.
Dec 7 2007 04:57:19:510PM1071207026Ron ParkerShot 26 ran full length, as did LH with ~300 kW flat top.
