| Session Leader plan for 1071219
SL: G. Wallace PO: E. Marmar This run will be a combination of MP's 473 (LH Conditioning) and 518 (LH NINJA Puffing). The gameplan is to start with MP473, bringing up the power level to at least 700kW. After bringing up the LH power level we will switch to MP 518. LH system setup: Phase shifters at 90 degrees current drive direction, 1.5mm behind LH limiter. Start at 40kV beam voltage. 500ms shot starting at 700ms. Plasma setup: Start with 1071207027. Overnight ECDC. Cryopump in afternoon. Shot Plan: Start with 500ms pulse at 80kW per klystron. Increase power each shot in 20kW/klystron incriments up to 700kW without arcing. After an arc, reduce power then continue raising in 10kW incriments. Operate NINJA LH_B and LH_D capillaries in piggyback mode after LH turns off at 1.2 seconds. Start at 5psi plenum fill and look at local density increase at LH grill. Adjust pressure up and down to see effect of different gas rates. Switch to MP 518 at 700kW net without arcs. Reduce power back to 20kW per klystron, 500ms pulse starting at 700ms. Set NINJA such that LH_B hits plasma at 900ms and LH_D hits plasma at 1100ms. Increase power in 10kW incriments, making sure we do not see flashes or breakdown in the waveguides. If possible, decrease programmed nl_04 to keep edge density near constant for good coupling. Gas puff rates may need to be adjusted if ionization increases with LH power level. Cryopump and upper null may be required for density control if all goes well. |

| Session Leader Summary for 1071219
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: E. Marmar The majority of this run day was spent testing the newly installed LH NINJA gas capillaries as part of MP 518. Shots 1 through 6 were conditioning shots (MP 473) to make sure the LH system was operating as expected. Piggyback gas puff tests on these early shots confirmed 5psi plenum pressure as a good starting point for MP 518. Gas puffing during the LH pulse started with shot 7. The plan was to start at low power in LSN and slowly increase shot to shot to make sure we did not see arcing in the vacuum side of the guides. The NINJA capillaries were set to trigger at 700ms at first, then changed to 650ms starting with shot 10. A delay of ~150ms is observed between the NINJA trigger and when the puff hits the plasma. Operation in LSN at up to 700kW at 5.6psi plenum fill was successful without any arcing in the waveguides on the vacuum side. This is one of the key points of the MP since there was some experience at JET that placing a gas capillary close to the LH antenna would cause arcing in the waveguides due to the ionization of neutral gas. This does not seem to be a problem in LSN at up to 700kW and 5psi. The reduction in reflections was quite pronounced at low power levels with power reflection coefficients falling from >35% to <25% for less than 300kW net LH power. As the power level increased, the reduction in reflections seemed to lessen, although the noise level in the reflections did still noticably decrease. A reduction in noise on the reflected signals does help prevent nuisance trips since sudden spikes in the reflected power often trip out the LH system when no arc is present. On shot 19 we switched to USN with the cryopump on, keeping the plenum at 5.6psi and ~700kW net LH power. This caused arcing on all four rows of the LH antenna starting when the gas puff hit at ~.8s. This seems to be the cause for a disruption at 1.05s. After this we reduced the LH net power ~500kW and the plasma density to nl_04~5.5e19 and did not see any more evidence of arcing on the LH camera. In upper null at ~500kW the effect of the gas puffing seemed to reduce reflections on the top of the grill while causing them to rise of the bottom of the grill. A comparison between shots 29 (7psi B and D side) and 30 (7psi D side only) show similar results, with reflections decreasing over time on the top of the grill and incraesing over time on the bottom of the grill. Overall, this run day was quite a success. We were able to run at 700kW with 5psi plenum fill without arcing in LSN. We were also able to run without arcing at 7psi plenum fill and 500kW net LH power in upper null. Unfortunately we lost much of the day due to a slow start and then disruptions and fizzles in the afternoon. Another day should allow us to explore the safe operational range a bit more, particularly to investigate the effect of increasing the outer gap and pulling the launcher back further behind the limiter. |

| A reasonably good run from the Physop point of view. We struggled with startup runaways for much of the run, mostly correlated with fast intitial current rise. I kept increasing the prefill pressure, eventually getting close to 0.1 mTorr. There were also tweaks to RCUR offset and BR_0.
We ran LSN shots without cryopumping, and then switched to USN with cryopumping for shot 19 and subsequent. We got into the afternoon fizzle cycle, starting with shot 22. Eventually we got the plasmas back (shot 26), perhaps because of aggressive prefill puffing and the wirehead tweaks. 2 shots were lost to the ef3 breaker pulling before t=0. One shot (14) hung in init (no power shot) Shot 2 disrupted early with errors on BP25_BC; the coil was ok for the rest of the run. Scorecard: Plasmas 24 Fizzles 4 P.S. Duds 2 Test/nopower 2 |

| Dec 19 2007 09:26:35:803AM | 1071219001 | Greg Wallace | LH shot ran clean at ~40kW per klystron. Some strange behavior on the setpoints for the LH system, Atma is investigating.
NINJA fired at 1.2s, hit the plasma around 1.35s on the LH camera view. Small density increase at LH grill visible as well as small increase in nl_04. |
| Dec 19 2007 09:47:55:343AM | 1071219002 | Greg Wallace | Disruption at 0.48s. |
| Dec 19 2007 10:38:33:220AM | 1071219003 | Greg Wallace | Test shot, no plasma. |
| Dec 19 2007 10:38:20:753AM | 1071219004 | Greg Wallace | Another disruption. |
| Dec 19 2007 11:00:36:057AM | 1071219005 | Greg Wallace | Full length plasma, LH ran clean although still putting out much less than the demand power. Will try one more time to get the system to work properly before going on to gas puffing experiments. |
| Dec 19 2007 11:12:09:030AM | 1071219006 | Greg Wallace | Funny behavior on 6B again caused some trips, but the klystrons are now giving the demanded power. Next shot will decrease to 30kW per klystron and fire NINJA at 700ms, which should cause the density to rise around 850ms. |
| Dec 19 2007 11:23:02:130AM | 1071219007 | Greg Wallace | Seems like the gas puffing works at 30kW per klystron!!!! The LH reflection coeffecient goes down significantly from ~35% to ~25% when the gas hits the plasma. The effect is more noticable on the top half of the grill. No signs of arcing on the LH camera. Next shot will keep the gas the same and increase LH power to 40kW per klystron. |
| Dec 19 2007 11:38:21:040AM | 1071219008 | Greg Wallace | It still works! No arcing on the vacuum side visible on camera, and the reflections decrease during the puff. Unfortunately nl_04 increases from 5.5-7e19 during the LH pulse. Next shot will turn down the puff from 5psi to 3psi and increase the power to 50kW per klystron. |
| Dec 19 2007 11:51:22:920AM | 1071219009 | Greg Wallace | No signs of arcing on the vacuum side. Still a significant effect on the reflections at 3.6psi with less increase in nl_04. Will increase to 60kW per klystron and move NINJA to 650ms firing for the next shot. |
| Dec 19 2007 12:02:59:783PM | 1071219010 | Greg Wallace | Reflections get "quieter" although less reduction in overall magnitude. Next shot will increase power to 70kW per klystron. |
| Dec 19 2007 12:16:46:697PM | 1071219011 | Greg Wallace | Not much decrease in reflections at 3.6psi. Will keep power at 70kW per klystron and increase fill to 5.6psi. |
| Dec 19 2007 12:32:26:610PM | 1071219012 | Greg Wallace | NINJA pressure increase didn't take. Next shot will keep power at 70kW and increase to 5.6psi for real. |
| Dec 19 2007 12:40:28:520PM | 1071219013 | Greg Wallace | Significant decrease in reflection, although nl_04 rose from 5.5 to 6.5e19. No arcing visible on the LH camera. Next shot will increase to 85kW per klystron. |
| Dec 19 2007 01:09:49:717PM | 1071219015 | Greg Wallace | Decrease in reflections during gas puffing is getting less obvious as the power increases. Still no sign of breakdown on the antenna. Will increase to 100kW per klystron and 50kV beam voltage. |
| Dec 19 2007 01:42:12:557PM | 1071219017 | Greg Wallace | Shot ran clean, still no arcing on the LH camera. Will increase to 135kW per klystron. |
| Dec 19 2007 01:47:33:060PM | 1071219018 | Greg Wallace | Effect of the puffing seems to be decreasing with power still, although still no arcing on vacuum side at 700kW net. Will change to upper null with cryopump on to see if we can decrease line averaged density while still keeping reflections down. |
| Dec 19 2007 02:12:26:570PM | 1071219019 | Greg Wallace | Looks like some sparking on the LH grill caused the disruption. For the next shot we will:
Decrease LH power to 100kW per klyston Decrease programmed density from 8 to 5e19 on nl_04 Turn off LH gas puff to get a baseline Saw some glowing after the disruption in the normal place between the C and D rows of the LH coupler. Not surprising given the very high Isat on the LH probes. |
| Dec 19 2007 03:22:17:660PM | 1071219021 | Greg Wallace | LH ran clean with no gas puffing. Grill density still quite high (>1e18) despite no puff. Will try decreasing nl_04 to 4e19 while turning puff back on and keeping power level at 100kW/klystron, 500kW net. |
| Dec 19 2007 02:43:07:533PM | 1071219022 | Greg Wallace | Fizzle. |
| Dec 19 2007 03:43:07:447PM | 1071219026 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot with coupling getting a bit noisier after the gas turns on. Seems like we need more gas so we'll increase the fill to 7psi on the NINJA. Keeping the LH power and plasma the same. |
| Dec 19 2007 04:21:22:400PM | 1071219026 | Greg Wallace | Clean shot with coupling getting a bit noisier after the gas turns on. Seems like we need more gas so we'll increase the fill to 7psi on the NINJA. Keeping the LH power and plasma the same. |
| Dec 19 2007 04:24:11:810PM | 1071219029 | Greg Wallace | Puff seems to help on top of grill but hurt on bottom. Next shot will turn off B side (bottom) capillary, keeping the LH power and plasma shape the same. |
| Dec 20 2007 02:07:57:687PM | 1071219030 | Greg Wallace | This shot had puffing only on the top of the grill. The reflections on the top of the grill come down from ~30% to ~20%, although on the bottom they rise from ~20% to ~30%. |
| Dec 20 2007 02:09:00:313PM | 1071219031 | Greg Wallace | Plasma disrupts at 1s. Prior to disruption the gas seems to make the reflections quieter although not reduce the magnitude. |
| Dec 19 2007 05:09:47:530PM | 1071219032 | Greg Wallace | Another good shot. Effect of gas puffing in this shot is unclear since the reflections are relatively constant over the shot. This is the last shot of the day. |
