All day allocated less 3 discharges at end for MSE Goal of obtaining a density scan with LSN 0.8 MA plasmas through detachment, stopping at each density to properly let the retention equilibrate (2-3 discharges at each density). Shot sequence: 1) nl04 of 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, 1.1 1.3, (1.5 if needed to get detachment) 2) 1.2 MA discharges at nl04=1.2 (2-3) 3) same discharges with ion current positioned as localized as possible on W tiles. Use 1070627005 (BUT MOVE THE LOWER X-POINT DOWN 1 CM AND INWARD IN R 2CM). Steps 1&2 with LSN Ohmic plasmas and strike point sufficiently low on the outer divertor to have the majority of the ion current to the lowest 2 tiles. Gate valves closed for 300+ seconds. No RF. No Ar or other impurity puff. |

SL: B. Lipschultz PO: W. Rowan Goal of obtaining a density scan with LSN 0.8 MA plasmas through detachment, stopping at each density to properly let the retention equilibrate (2-3 discharges at each density). Most of the goals of the run were achieved. We did obtain a very thorough density scan up into detachment. This allowed both retention measurements as well as probe measurements of the SOL (3 locations) characteritics for understanding the divertor and SOL profiles - something we are coming back for in light of the 5 year plan and our emphasis on understanding q_paralle. An added bonus to today's run was the Brian and Noah obtained very detailed measurements of the poloidal phase velocity of the fluctuations. At lower densities the three probes show a similar phase velocity profile and value. What we missed today was the high ion flux at higher currents. We also did not get to the experiment with flux first on the Mo and then on the W tiles. Retention: The amount of retention was a pretty constant function of the divertor fluence up till detachment; roughly 1-2% of the divertor fluence was retsined. At the highest densities when the outer divertor fluence measure stopped increasing the retention kept increasing as the density increased. This likely due to ion fluence to surfaces beyond the spatial limit of the divertor probes (the outermost divertor prove which maps to the shadow of the main limiter had densities of 1.5e20 m-3). Included in such surfaces are the limiter surfaces. So if we include such fluxes/fluences which continue to increase with density even when the outer div. fluence saturates then the retained fraction of fluence may not rise at the highest densities. Note also that the number of discharges needed for retention to come to equilibrium is numerous (>5) at the lowest densities where the fluence is lowest. |

| Dec 21 2007 08:32:49:147AM | 1071221001 | Matt Reinke | Running 1 or 2 repeats of 1070629031 to do a right gap scan for spatial calibration of the 2D bolometry. Need to run in the morning to avoid noise problems on 20 ch WB2 array. |
| Dec 21 2007 09:19:30:103AM | 1071221002 | Matt Reinke | Outer gap scan plasma worked great, got data on all arrays including WB1-AX and WB2-LY. |
| Dec 21 2007 09:44:08:283AM | 1071221003 | Bruce Lipschultz | Shot 3: LSN 800 kA, nl04 ~ 0.5. retention. Slot divertor for most of the shot. This differs from the last time we did this and the slot div surface was covered with B (we think). |

| Dec 21 2007 10:32:47:477AM | 1071221007 | Bruce Lipschultz | nl04=0.6, 0.8 MA looks pretty good for strike point. Probe 1 still in common flux at 0.5s so tweaking RXL out 2 mm to fix that for the next shot. |
| Dec 21 2007 10:49:19:543AM | 1071221008 | Bruce Lipschultz | nl04=0.6, 0.8 MA strike point better - on probe 1 at 0.5 s and sweeping up the plate a bit.
