| Session Leader Plan for 1080104
Session Leader: G. Wallace Physics Operator: E. Marmar MP518 LH_B and LH_D NINJA Capillary Testing This will be a 1/2 day (morning) run to continue testing the new LH NINJA capillaries. Since we already confirmed on 1071219 that the system can operate at up to 700kW without arcing we will now move on to see if gas injection can help with coupling over long distances between the grill and the seperatrix. Plasma Setup: Overnight ECDC. Cryopump on all shots. Start with 1071219032. LH Setup: 2.5mm behind limiter, start at 40kV beam voltage and 85kW per klystron, firing from .7 to 1.3 seconds. Shot Plan: 1) Start at 85kW per klystron. NINJA off and outer gap constant at 1.5cm during LH pulse for the first shot to get a baseline for the coupling. Repeat shot with different control gains if density varies by more than +/-10%. 2) Repeat shot 1 with ~10psi NINJA puff on B and D side with puff triggering from 0.55s to 1.25s. 3) Increase outer gap to 2.5cm. 4) If waves are able to couple at 2.5cm, increase outer gap to 3.5cm. 5) If waves are able to couple at 3.5cm outer gap, increase outer gap to a maximum of 4.5cm during LH pulse. 6) Sweep outer gap from 1.5cm at .7s to 4.5cm at 1.3s. Keep NINJA off. 7) Repeat shot 6 with ~5psi NINJA puff on B and D side with puff triggering from 0.55s to 1.25s. 8) Repeat shot 6 with ~10psi NINJA puff on B and D side with puff triggering from 0.55s to 1.25s. |

| SL Plan for high power ICRF
Start with 1080103029 (LSN). We may later switch to USN (1080103005). Continue with high power conditioning focusing on J antenna and H/D. 1. Using LSN discharges, obtain high power RF pulses till H/D has saturated or we run out of time - scan current to investigate voltage limits on antenna We will modify discharge parameters as deemed necessary. will be monitoring voltage and power limits will adjust density and current to avoid J neutral pressure limit |

Engineering Setup ----------------- MP355 ICRF Conditioning Wukitch/Lin MP518 Lower Hybrid NINJA Capillary Testing Wallace We will start by continuing where we left off on 1080103, with high ICRF power, high plasma current conditioning. The main purpose is to reduce hydrogen fractions in anticipation of the first boronization next week. If we make sufficient progress, the latter ~half of the run will switch over to Lower Hybrid, MP518. Run begins at 09:00 and ends at 17:00 Power systems as on: 1080103029 Acoil: +Dtop -Dbot -Jtop +Jbot (standard) Hybrid Enabled Gas setup: Fill B-Top with 6 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG4) fill B-side lower with 1 psi Ar Hybrid DISABLED (PG1) leave B-side upper as is Hybrid DISABLED (PG2) fill B-main (C-side) with 40 psi D2 Hybrid enabled (PG3) fill NINJA with 10 psi D2 DISABLED Enable gatevalves and shutters: ECE, VUV, DNB, Z-bolo Torvac gatevalve toggle (yes/no): yes, 300 s Boronization(yes/no): no Overnight ECDC (yes/no): yes ICRF(yes/no): yes LH(yes/no): after ICRF part of the run DNB(yes/no): if possible Cryopump (yes/no): yes, if we have helium, but not cold at the start of the run Vessel temperature: 35/35/35 ------------------------------ ECDC Parameters ------------------------------ gas and pressure: D2 at 2e-4 Torr sweep: 44/45/103 cm scan: 20/120 s |

| Run Summary:
Succeeded obtaining high power (>4 MW) ICRF discharges throughout the day. We operated J antenna up to 3 MW and ran into FMIT #4 power supply current limits due to low plate impedance. Thus, the coupled power was limited by the power supply as opposed to the antenna or transmission line. We need to understand why the overload gives an indication but did not trip the high voltage. This is likely because the supply can provide current in excess of its maximum for short pulses as they were today. There is a current squared times time overload and xbar to limit to prevent damage to the supply. We also successfully tested real time antenna phase control and found the matching did vary but was relatively benign. The H/D level appeared to routinely increase from ~0.1 to 0.2 throughout the discharge but did not ratchet up from discharge to discharge. |

| In spite of losing about 2 hours chasing a TF crow-bar issue, the run accomplished much of the main goal, injecting high power ICRF and monitoring hydrogen fraction evolution. Close to 6 MW were injected on some shots, and 4 MJ ICRF energy was exceeded on several shots. We also tried turning on the cryopump with LSN plasmas, scanning zcur upward in an attempt to increase coupling to the pump. This reduced midplane neutral pressure, but had no obvious effect on h fraction.
Near the end of shot 3, a type 1 fault was generated, pulling all the breakers and crow-barring the TF magnet. There was no evidence of a ground fault on any digitized signals, nor on the ground-fault latch in the power room. After various tests, including a 100 kA TF only pulse, the run continued without further problems in this regard. 2 shots were lost to EF3 breaker pulls early in pulse. 1 shot was a dud because the cryopump burped at just the wrong time. There were 2 post-disruption fizzles. Scorecard: Plasmas: 21 PS Duds: 2 Cryo-Dud: 1 Tests: 5 Fizzles: 2 Total cycles: 31 |
